Windows XP Home Edition Problem

by rexkim - 2/23/08 4:12 PM

Well...my friend's computer is having some problems.

The computer (an old Dell model. I can't remember the model numbe.) was hit by a virus that slowed the processes of the computer down as well as downloading other programs onto it.

In hopes of fixing this problem, many anti virus scans were used but none of them worked so as a last ditch effort, the built in F10 System Recovery was used.

XP reinstalled perfectly (or so we thought) and it worked well until the login.

It loaded properly and it showed the welcome. However, right after, the screen became a light blue screen with an active mouse. The left and right clicks did nothing and there was nothing on screen. Not even the taskbar. It was impossible to restart or turn off the computer.

However, using Ctrl + Alt + Delete, it was possible to run Task Manager. Using Task Manager, we opened the C drive and found that the files were all hidden but intact. We made the way to the Control Panel and created a new user profile with administrative properties. All of a sudden, the taskbar appeared and the computer worked under the new login account. No sight of the virus either. However, is there a way to fix the bug? I've heard of a similar one with a black screen with an active mouse but this seems different. Thanks in advance.

Not sure what the problem is.

Are you saying that the computer works OK now with the new User Account?

If so, what is the bug you are still having problems with?

Note, if the old files are still installed but you cannot access them through the new account, try "Taking Ownership";

Doesn't sound like a BIOS problem to me.

And be careful when updating the BIOS. It can be tricky.

You still haven't explained fully what the problem is now? Is that new User Account working?

Sorry for the long absence but yes. It works fine with the new account. I was hoping to make the original account work as well but the friend doesn't mind the original not working. Thanks everyone.

Can you still see those folders and files

Can you, (or your friend), still see the folders and files for the old account?

In My Computer navigate through the C drive to Documents and Settings. Does the old account username appear there? If so can you access those old files?

In case any old folders and files give an Access Denied message, I gave a link in my earlier post for "Taking Ownership".
