I want to point out that this poll has to be flawed. I guarantee you .Mac users that havent tried Vista voted that its terrible, or die hard XP users who have just heard bad things voted that its bad.
Honestly, I was hesitant to set up even a dual boot, but I was getting it free from Windows Feedback Panel, so I thought "what the heck, I can use it for DX10 anyways, but other than that, Ill just let it sit there."
Honestly, other than a three hour hunt for some drivers for my Wifi card, it was fine. Now, Belkin wasnt any help with the hunt. They produced five different versions of the same model, and only the latest version had Vista x64 support.
I searched around and eventually found that Belkin had sold the rights to a British company for the particular FCC number I was looking for. While Belkin didnt have drivers for it, this other company whose product had the same FCC ID did.
I installed the drivers they had written for Vista x64 and it worked like a charm.
That has been my only gripe. I did get the BSoD the other day, but that was caused by a beta program, and I havent had a chance to test it in XP yet.
I have had complete compatibility with my programs, even if they require some tweaking (running in XP mode for instance).
Everything runs super smooth, and I am able to run Dream Scene with no performance drop.
I have yet to install SP1 (they released it to x64 last night via Windows Update), but Im sure that will only improve my experience.
I run the following:
Vista x64 Ultimate (and XP x32 Home)
Phenom9600 2.3Ghz Quad Core
4gb Dual Channel RAM
MSI NX8600GT TT Super Clocked Edition.
Everything runs smoothly. No gripes with Vista.
My only super praise with it, is Dream Scene, and the fact that Aero is so Shiny!
I hardly ever boot into XP now, and I love that Vista plays so much better with my Zune. (faster Wifi Syncs)
I just recently bought a brand new computer with Vista pre-installed {no other choice thanks to the monopoly that is Microsoft (beside Mac)}I did a clean (delete partition & reformat hdd)install of Vista Ultimate 64bit. Still sucked just not as bad. Seems to me that vista is a resource HOG. Needless to say, like so many others I am now running XP Pro 64. I have also added a vista menu, taskbar, sidebar, startglobe,
toolbar/searchbar, Quickflip, glass styling, modified boot screen & login screen, etc... The thing hardly touches my ram (approx 564 - 608 Meg)
will run almost any app or proggy I choose and still has all the bells and whistles. Why is it so hard for MS to do what we in the scene can.
Oh Yeah, they have to over complicate and bloat so they can continue to produce more updates & hotfixes. Seems like they took a page from AOL's design manual.
I have used "home basic" since it was released and thought it was fairly good, except for the nag screens and security update versus java issue and the disc was a sorry imitation of plastic.
I just bought "home premium" and installed it today so far so good
I am running Vista Home Premium and have had no trouble at all with it. It is excellent for music and downloads etc.
I used to run XP SP2 and had more problems with that than I have had with Vista.
Highly recomended operating system
i have an xp notebook, i regularly have to send an error report. its not very responsive and has outlived it's usefulness. i bought a macbook, it took weeks for it to arrive. at an inflated price you would think it was worth it. i see why mac lovers like to bash vista, it's to cover the fact they were 100% ripped off by apple. they're trying to hide the fact they bought into over priced, over hyped garbage. along with absolutley nothing from their old worn out xp system works on it. i, after almost two months, finally was able to return my macbook at a full refund. one of the worst customer service companies you'll ever deal with. just don't buy into the hype, apple and anything iRleated isn't worth the hassle or price. then there's linux, the most unstable un-userfriendly thing i've ever came across. it looks and runs like a little kid got his erector set and crayons out and decided to build something on a boring day. just more over hyped useless garbage. then i tried vista home premium to see why no one liked it. i installed it (over the old worn out xp) and was immediately impressed by the graphics and sounds. i spent one evening figuring out everything it does. after i learned everything it's capable of the first thing i did was get rid of all the old worn out programs i use to use because vista already supplied it. i installed all the rest of my programs and didn't have one bit of trouble. actually they run better on vista. the only problem came when i installed my anti virus. this was as close as i ever came to having any kind of slowing or stability issues. after i tried all the ones pushed by the advertisers on download.com, majorgeeks, etc., ive narrowed it down to three. avira antivirus for all the cheap free wanting people. kaspersky internet security, which slows vista down a little bit, and eset's smart security. i prefer the two security suites because of the integration of the anti virus, anti spyware, firwalls, etc. i also run the paid versions of spyware doctor and/or spysweeper. i do a lot of personal work online and in no way would i trust any free security products. i've never had one infection of any kind other than all of download.coms tracking cookies. i've found absolutley no reason why anyone can honestly say anything's wrong with vista but i've narrowed down the possiblities.
1.) they're embarrased they were taken in by the mac hype
2.) to poor to upgrade or purchase a new computer
3.) not smart enough to figure vista out
4.) just can't let go of the past...
5.) they've never even used vista
the only two things ive seen the most are the gamers, like anyone cares what they think. just a bunch of kids who live in the basement. or someone has a slow file transfer? those really seem like a few of the lamest things i've ever heard.
so i obviously have chosen vista home premuim, i even have it on my notebook that i use to go out and repair all the old outdated xp machines, lmao
no more linux, mac or xp for me, but if windows 7 is as good as they say i'll upgrade to that when it comes out. i'm not one to get suckered or stay in the past. if i truely had a reason to bash vista i would have, but i came up with nothing other than it's entirely the user who's at fault with the operating system
I am not too stupid or poor to upgrade.
I have better things to spend my money on. (Look above for my previous post.)
I have no intention, like many other pc users, to buy a $5k Alienware pc to do my day to day tasks.
With few exceptions, all of the PC's and laptops in my home and office are within Microsoft Specifications to run Vista. I do not need to upgrade much (except maybe maxing the RAM on any machine I would try it on.)
The fact that Microsoft has decided to force us all to buy a new PC to use thier "newest" software is by far thier worst manuver yet.
I had no intention of blowing some steam here, but it seems that there are a large number of Vista supporters here mouthing off a little.
It would appear the suporters are asumming that the rest of us are stuck in the past; or too stupid to figure vista out; or too poor to upgrade/purchase a new PC.
Lets keep it clean people. You think Vista is the greatest thing next to sliced bread. I think it would work great as a coaster.
There is no reason to bash each other about it.
well put! (especially the coaster bit ![]()
Personally, on my laptop with 512MB DDR2 memory and a 1.73GHz centrino (single core) windows vista business runs at almost (if not exactly) the same speed as XP. (note that Vista automatically disabled the flashier effects due to the low performance of my system).
I voted "undecided." Here are my likes and dislikes about vista:
Likes:
-Disk management can now resize partitions (in XP you could only create/delete them, not resize).
Dislikes:
-sound recorder is a shadow of its former self: in XP, you could do basic sound editing (deleting all sound before/after your current position; adding a sound file to the end of the current sound file; increasing/decreasing speed etc.) whereas in vista all you can do is record.
- You can make vista look like win98 but not like winXP by deafult (i.e. they don't have the Windows Luna theme)
-(personal preference) all that black is depressing - couldn't they have made it yellow? ![]()
-astronomical "recommended requirements" - before Vista came out, you'd only find 2GB of RAM on a top-of-the-range ultra gaming PC. IMHO You don't need 64MB of graphics memory just to write a letter in wordpad, sheesh!
-compiz fusion (a linux program that puts your desktops on a cube, and makes the windows wiggle when you move them) runs perfectly fine on my PC but then Vista with its silly transparency effects doesn't think my machine is worthy to enable the Luna interface.
PS in case you're wondering, I'm currently using Ubuntu and WinXP (mainly Ubuntu)
I am running Vista Ultimate. Because it is more visual than XP, I had to upgrade my graphics card. I knew this before hand. I thought I would be able to get away with it, but not!! I have not got any 'Ultimate Extras' yet, so still waiting to find out what thats about. The main main thing that seperates Vista from XP that I have found is that Vista 'fixes' it's self far more readily than XP used to. I find this very helpful! I don't get what all the bad press is about. I upgraded and it works great. A few changes on how things are done, but thats to be expected! Bring on SP1!!!!!!
Vista is.
I have had no problems and works fast with my new Dell computer. With saying the above, I have to say I was very wary of the purchasing VISTA and bought 2 gb RAM, eliminated any extranious software, and installed the fastest processor allowed to purchase. I feel the, "only essential software", increase memory and processor made the difference.
I am very satisfied with Windows Vista Home Premium. Why are there so many people who had bad user experience with Windows Vista? This is understandable. Windows Vista Home Premium isn't perfect, panacea or whatever. It'll never work well alone. To have a good user experience, you need suitable hardware and software. It is easy to learn and use. No matter how easy is it, you will never master it unless you reall pay attention to it.
I put Windows Vista Home Premium on my laptop, and haven't had any trouble with it at all. My daughter has Vista Ultimate on her new PC, an it has been very good.
Ya, I had Vista Ultimate 64 also with 4 Gig of RAM and it was fast. Than on a bet I went back to XP and OH Nelly are we flying yet? Vista trot is not acceptable to XP gallop. Behind a good hardware firewall I am not missing Vista's DRM.
I went from Windows 98 to Vista. I know so little about computers that I cannot really give an opinion. I was satisfied with Windows 98, but it couldn't handle the newer programs. That's the only reason that I switched.
