You mentioned you replaced your Vista, with XP. I have the disk, could you please tell me how to replase Vista with XP- I hate it!!!!
LadyMaverick
Please tell me how I CAN REPLACE VISTA WITH XP. I REALLY DISPISE THE PROGRAM AND IT Is HARD TO WORK WITH AND SO SO sloooow!I have an XP disc . I just need instructions. The laptop came already loaded with Vista. It is a very nice Toshiba. HELP ME FROM DOING SONETHING STUPID TO THE COMPUTER- like throwing it off a high building.
1.) Backup any/all personal files you have on the hard drive.
2.) Use DBAN to wipe the hard drive clean.
3.) Follow these instructions to perform a clean installation of Windows XP.
4.) Track down drivers for any malfunctioning devices, such as your sound card, graphics card, etc. Try the manufacturer's website for older but similar models that supported XP.
5.) Reinstall all software and copy your personal files back.
Hope this helps,
John
Thanks!! However, I have to admit to being a rookie- what is DBAN?
DBAN stands for Derik's Boot and Nuke, a free third-party application designed to launch from CD/DVD/USB/floppy and securely erase the contents of your hard drive by overwriting all data multiple times. This guarantees that all but a government agency will be 8unable to recover the files, unlike with standard formatting.
Hope this helps,
John
Thanks very much. I have an older computer I will use this to wipe before I give it away. My laptop with Vista is in the shop so I will try it when I get it back. I appreciate your help!!!
I have been using Vista almost a year now. Runs fast and smooth, absolutely love the silky GUI. Has worked with all my hardware and software. I did have to download an update for Nero.
HP supplied all the necessary hardware drivers.
I'm very happy with it too.
Noticed that you said you downloaded an update for Nero. Was this a free update? When I checked the website they wanted to charge for a Vista compatible version. No updates.
I'm using Vista Ultimate edition.
Satisfied with Vista because I find it more stable and reliable than older OS I've use.
I love the "search" feature. No need for shortcuts of program on desktop or taskbar. Just type the program name on the "search" box and it will be offered by Vista.
Somewhat dissatisfied on Ultimate edition because the Ultimate Extras is 3 only so far. Hope to see more.
I bought my wife a laptop before christmas with vista home on it.
It is an Acer. Not a bad machine by the specs: 1.9 ghz celeron; 120 gb 7200 rpm sata hard drive; 15.1 widescreen; dvd-cdrw drive; onboard a/b/g atheros wireless adapter; 1 gb ddr2 ram.
The Acer laptop is significantly slower than my Micron Transport gx3 (p4-m 1.7; 20 gb 5400 rpm hd; 15 standard display; cd-rw; onboard atheros a/b/g wireless adapter (aftermarket, didn't ship with it
) 512 ddr ram; Windows XP Pro)
I was dissapointed with Vista. It is so large and seems to be bloaty. I have uninstalled or disabled as much of the "usefull" and "eye candy" crap that ships with Vista (and the Acer "helpful" software) And the acer still drags. I thought the fast hard drive and ram should make up for the low cache celeron, but it doesn't. ![]()
Since Acer refuses to support XP on the machine (even though they list all the XP drivers for it), I bought a second hard drive. (They tell me that since it has Vista (COA) on it, they are bound by contract not to support anything but Vista.)
I installed XP on the second drive and the laptop was so much faster that my wife and I agreed that the factory hard drive will stay in the acer box if we ever need to send the laptop in for repairs. ![]()
Maybe if I had a quad core xeon pc with 12 gb of ram and the latest SCSI 15k rpm drives, I might be swayed to give Vista a try.
Based on my experience, though, I doubt that Vista has a home in my personal PC's and, as of yet, vista will not be gracing the PC's My business uses.
I got Vista Home Premium with a brand new HP Touchsmart all-in-one PC and it's been great. There were some minor glitches here and there but they've all vanished over the past few months with each additional automatic update. And when possible I used software apps designed with Vista in mind, like IE7, Office 2007, etc. Also I do not, repeat do not, use any 3rd anti-virus app since they're all notorious for crippling systems. I use Windows Defender behind a router/firewall and that's kept me virus-free for years. Similarly with the User Access Control feature, I just turn it off since I quickly tired of the prompting to delete files, folders, or to add apps. My system is safe as configured and used so UAC is irrelevant for me.
The colorful and translucent aero interface is fresh and quick, and the Windows Search function makes it very simple and quick to find files, bookmarks, apps, and any object on your system. The Media Center functionality is simply great. I use it all the time to record local shows in high-definition to play back on the Touchsmart's glossy 19" high-def LCD. And the gadget sidebar is a very handy way to immediately view a clock, calendar, weather info, system dashboard, notepad stickies, etc. Very very nice and always useful.
Vista may have gotten a bad rap for those trying to upgrade their XP systems. There's alot of inherent problems in upgrading, especially with Vista since it carried pretty strict system performance prereqs. But if you get Vista pre-installed on a sufficiently powerful system you will be very satisfied with the experience.
I hate it because my older software won't work on it. it worked ok XP Pro sp4 but not vista. sux.

#1) They're only now talking about releasing SP3 in a couple of months. Boy you must really know someone at MS to go straight to SP4 before SP3 has been released.
#2) Why not upgrade your programs/ hardware to Vista compatible?
#3) I'm in agreement with post #26's first paragraph!
As soon as you send me a check for about $4000 for the various upgrades and that still won't cover the re-write on a special service program I use ................ I'll be waiting for the check, till then Vista stays in the box
#3) should read
I'm in agreement with: I would like to point out... by say592's 1st para.
