Using XP Home, SP2, auto update. Stand alone machine.
What is the consensus now? Is installing XP SP3 RC2 a good idea?
Thanks
Ben

Yes, that is about Vista but use that as a data point that Microsoft seems to think it's fine to break apps with the SPs.
Don't do it until it's released.

I'd wait for any "production" machines. If it's your main home system, and you don't want to have it rendered useless, then wait. If it's a backups system, and it getting hosed isn't such a big deal, then you can give it a try if you want.
Otherwise, the official rollout is either next month or soon after, so I'd just wait a little longer. The one exception might be if you really need some of the Vista features backported into SP3. Otherwise, it's just a big mess of updates, most of which you probably already have installed if you've been visiting Windows Update regularly, as you should be.
Whenever Microswipe Releases An update there Are Always holes in It Which Enables Hackers To Enter Your Machine Alot Easier Wait Until Microjunk Releases The Patches Which For The First Month or 2 After It's Final Release Is About The Time they Will Have Mostholes Patched I Shouldn't Bash Microsoft As A tech i need Them But As A Tech They Also need Me To Continue To Promote Their products As They Do All Freelance It Guys As Big As They Are they would Lose @least 20% of their sales w/o us!!!!!!!!!
but i really do not sugguest it i haven't installed it because i am using vista ultimate 32 bit and vista itself has a trillion problems they need to work on the all the service packe does is complies all the exsisting updates and a few new ones in order to speed up the update process no other reason its no more secure then installing them one by one so as they release updates download them on a custom level for now theres lots of updates you dont wnat or need like the remote desktop update unless your on a server or a vpn chances are you have no use for it because you dont wnat anyone accessing your machine remotely
stop capitalizing everything!!
You took the time to write a response, why not write it in a way that people can actually read? Otherwise it's a waste of everybody's time.
Good afternoon or evening in my case here in Tx. I am the IT go-to guy for our squadron here at Sheppard AFB. Anytime we get a hold of updates hitting the streets, our geek squad likes to test run the updates and verify its affects on SP2 machines. I ran SP3 and to be honest I dont recommend using it for quite a while. As mentioned in another response, if you already have SP2 updated and you do it frequently, these are included in SP3. I did find some glitches with SP3 such as services running in the background such as Windows themes, stops. In addition, most software on the market does not recognize SP3 and can give the message, "update to the latest service pack, SP2". Obviously thats an issue. If you arent having issues now with SP2, I would wait until SP3 becomes a "critical update" and go from there. As with any service pack, some programs have compatibility issues so keep an eye on those. Check out the link from PCMAG for more details on SP3: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2200774,00.asp
I actually installed this on my computer and did not have any problems with the OS. Although, I did not notice any thing different in operations. However, none of my utilities would work correctly, not even McAfee site advisor would work. Luckly, I had set a restore point and was able to remove the SP. Do note, That should you decide to install this, the download and installation took about 2 hours, using a DSL internet connection.
I have been using it and I haven't found any problems. That said I see no advantages (features) either. Made my machine a little peppier.
Took 5 mins to download and installed in 60 mins. 336 Mb.
It removed about 2/3 of windows updates as reported in Belarc Advisor.
The computer I use isn't connected to any doomsday machines so I'll see how it goes.
All programs are working that I have installed.
As i have used sp3 and sp2, i feel sp3 is better, fast, and more reliable than sp2. So installing sp3 is a good idea.
soooo, install, don't install, just know that they are still working on it.
i think it is more safe, so you should install it
followed many & responded to a few of your past posts, I wouldn't feel comfortable installing ANY BETA or RC releases on my machine! I'm not nearly techie enough to deal w/ the possible consequences...& would prefer not to have to use vast amounts of my comp time trying to trace down & correct the resulting problems/crashes & general weirdness!!
Just a word to the wise...caution above all else! Sandy ![]()
You could wait until it officially comes out, but even then, I'd wait a couple of more months after that while they develop patches for SP3 even further. Because you KNOW they're gonna have to do that.
