THERE WAS A TIME WHEN "THE THREE BIG P's" were all.......

by Riverledge - 6/26/07 10:05 PM In reply to: Opinion on Philips 42" Ambilight 2 42PFL7432D by Mecheye

CONSIDERED ALMOST EQUAL PANASONIC, PIONEER, & PHILIPS.......but things changed.

PANASONIC concentrated on its Plasmas; leaving quality gap in its RPTV LCD/DLP's and its LCD FP's to suffer.

PHILIPS bet the farm on the "AMBILIGHT" technology on its high priced sets! MAGNAVOX is bleeding, (PHILIPS' subsidiary) its corporate parent dry.

PIONEER, has forsaken all other technologies to concentrate only on PLASMA's.

PANASONICs rate
as the poor man's PIONEER.
SAMSUNGs

Any TRUTH TO THAT???

Sammy customer service

by joet1962 - 6/28/07 4:17 PM In reply to: Opinion on Philips 42" Ambilight 2 42PFL7432D by Mecheye

Take into consideration that Samsungs customer service stinks if you have a problem with it. Trying to resolve a problem is complete torture.

Sammy

by ns387241 - 6/30/07 9:25 AM In reply to: Sammy customer service by joet1962

Does anybody's cutomer service actually come close to being good?

Please keep in mind that all of the products I have had trouble with (including my Pio FHD-1) have had ****** customer service. That being said, I have noticed sammys to have a few quirks about them. But do keep this in mind, if you are to spend the kind of money ($2500), than by all means the Pioneer PDP-4280HD would be the best 42" this side of LOWE or Dreamvision (no longer sold in US). The 4280 is ASSEMBLED IN THE USA, which is one big reason for it to be so much money. At the same time, have you ever looked at one? If you have the money, this is a no-brainer! But the Sammy is a close second, as it does have very good color, and for the price reange should not be downplayed at all. If Panasonic and plasma are used in the same sentence, the first word that comes to mind is "dull". The Pioneer is by far the best, but the Sammy is also a good choice. Also the Hitachi Director's series would be a worthwile investment in that 2500+ range.

NO, NOT REALLY; BUY SONY HAS TRIED VERY HARD TO..........

by Riverledge - 6/30/07 11:27 PM In reply to: Sammy by ns387241

UP-GRADE ITS CUSTOMER SERVICE. SAMSUNG is trying; and PANASONIC now has "The Concierge" for plasma piece of mind; for what's worth. It's a shame you're looking for anything smaller than a 50" model.

I currently own one of the questioned sets

by ESTOLLER - 6/30/07 5:34 PM In reply to: Opinion on Philips 42" Ambilight 2 42PFL7432D by Mecheye

I own the Phillips plasma ambilight 42 inch set and I think the ambilight is great. We use it all of the time, we turn out all of the lights and it gives a greater entertainment experience. Sound from the set is nothing great compaired to my previous TV (Panasonic GAOO) but that is no problem because we use the surround system that we have for all audio. Interestingly though the plasma did seem to need a couple of weeks to break in as the picture quality seemed to improve over time. I do recommend the ambilight and I think that the other manufacturers should adopt the technology.

I concur. The Ambilight feature proved annoying on the test set from Philips I had purchased and retured to Best Buy within a week. The lighting system that would be needed to truly surround you in picture would require so much more than two panels on the back off the TV. These panels also draw from the same power supply as the TV, which always decreases reliability. As for the transition from a dark wall to an annoyingly bright TV (surprisingly dark when set to standard, that is 50,50,50; but the dynamic mode was bright) I find the Ambilight II to do an inferior job compared to those plasmas that actually have a light sensor built in.

Great TV

by stewi2 - 7/11/07 12:44 PM In reply to: Riverledge: by ns387241

I have the 42pfl7432d and absolutely love it. I think the ambilight feature actually helps increases perceived black levels in a dark room by keeping your eyes from adjusting too much. The dynamic color is kind of gimmicky, but not that bad either. Plus, you can actually manually set the color and brightness.

Also, it does have a light sensor built in which works quite nicely to keep the set from blinding you at night.

It's done, i made a decision...

by Mecheye - 8/13/07 8:00 AM In reply to: in the end by Stoutimous

and i went with the philips. After reading forums and reviews, and viewing a few at the store, along with the pioneer 4280 which was too expensive, tho i loved it, the sammy plasma which was just not as good in the sharpness, and the sony's, none of which i found great. in the end, i went for what looked the best and matched my application. I have white walls in a relatively small room, and you can call the ambilight a gimmick all you want, but in a smaller room with white walls it really looks awesome. the tv does have a light sensor as well which helps, and the picture matched up to everything except the new samsung lcds and the pioneers, which were out of my price range by around 500-600 dollars. i could not get anything above a 42" because it wouldnt fit, otherwise the decision would have been different. my father actually just bought a pio 5080, and that thing is AMAZING.

I wanna thank you all for your input, and know that you all helped me in looking into every specific detail of the tvs i looked into. i'll keep posting on any pros and cons i run into with this set, but so far i adore it. the remote doesnt have dvd controls, but that is the only complaint i have thus far. but i'll prolly rectify that with a good universal remote. thanks again everyone!

Obvisiously, not my first choice, but I'm wishing and your PHILIPS a long relationship.

Best wishes,

Ambilight Rocks

by peterwhite - 2/21/08 4:08 PM In reply to: Opinion on Philips 42" Ambilight 2 42PFL7432D by Mecheye

First of all, I own this set and have 4 or 5 friends with Ambilight 1 and 2 sets - none of us have disabled the feature. The closest example to that is one friend with a 50 or 52 inch set that switched from Dynamic to Passive (changes colors at a much slower rate rather than on the fly). Secondly, it really enhances both game play and cool high definition programs dealing with Nature subjects like NatGeo or Discovery Channel. The image is superb and I love the 3 hdmi inputs (cable, Soundbar / DVD upconverter, 360 Pro). Perfect. I am thrilled to own one.
