What Happened To Sotec?

by SRKaye - 1/9/07 5:29 AM In reply to: (NT) Formerly Sotec. Expect the same to happen. by R. Proffitt Moderator

I just bought this Averatec at costco. It seems to have nice power for the price. I bought a 17", and here is the link http://reviews.cnet.com/AVERATEC_AV7170_EC1_Turion_64_X2_TL_50_1_6_GHz_17_TFT/4505-3121_7-32215644.html. I have 6 months to return it, so it just seemed like there was no risk to try out. Should I return it?

Too soon to tell.

The same players are in the new company. The issue here is their past history on spares and repairs. But let's note that many are in for rude shocks about out of warranty repair costs. It has to do with many opting for laptops rather than desktops and not knowing that a small desktop repair is very expensive on laptops.

Having the not so big name doesn't help here. Avertec's name change and past performance as Sotec has me pass on their products.

Are you talking about repairs under warranty?

by SRKaye - 1/9/07 6:36 AM In reply to: Too soon to tell. by R. Proffitt Moderator

Thanks Bob for responding. So if I have to take it to the company after the 6 month return policy with Costco, will it take them a long time to fix it and send it back?

Let the internet speak on this?

Let's try some words at google.com

Seems there are plenty of stories around about this. There are no great companies for this issue it seems. Lesson? Keep that warranty in place to avoid big surprises.

Buyer Beware: Averatec has terrible warranty service

by networkchick - 2/19/08 11:34 AM In reply to: (NT) Formerly Sotec. Expect the same to happen. by R. Proffitt Moderator

This question is from over a year ago, but someone might want a similar answer in '08!
I was quite happy with my Averatec laptop until my motherboard failed and I had to send it in for in-warranty repair. Not only was the hard drive interface proprietary, so I couldn't easily grab my data up before sending it off or find a shop that would (nor did Averatec have a recommendation), but Averatec has now had my laptop for over 2 months and can't give me a single estimate of how long they'll continue to have it for. There are motherboard shipments coming in and being distributed on a first-come, first-service basis, but they can't estimate how many more orders need to come in until my laptop is serviced. The manager of support told me he had no one to escalate this to and that he had no access to information valuable to my request for a turnaround time estimate.
Reason alone not to buy this brand at all. Without good support, no product is worth buying.

Post about that hard disk in a new post.

The make and model may help. But I wonder if it is the usual issue where some adapter thing is on the drive that confused them.
