Im back: Firewall issue
by CoreyP - 1/17/06 9:11 PMI dont know if XP comes with a firewall but im assuming it does caue its stopping alot of things from opening. Does anyone know how to config the firewall? Thanks for the great help guys!

Before SP2, the firewall was configured to only block incoming requests, and I think that's what most people confuse for it only doing incoming. With SP2 it became much easier to configure it to block outgoing requests as well, but it was possible before as well.
ZoneAlarm really isn't any better than XP's firewall if that's what you're basing it off of. In fact, ZoneAlarm will suck up resources above and beyond XP's firewall, which is strangely lean and efficient for Microsoft. As a general rule, I avoid products like ZoneAlarm that try to be a one stop solution to every security woe. Programs like that NEVER deliver on all their boastful claims, and all those extra features create many more opportunities for security issues in the program you're relying on for protecting your system. Think of it like looking for 10 grammar errors in two different books. One book is 100 pages long, the other 10,000 pages. Which do you suppose will be easier to edit?

If your firewall asks you what you want to do regarding blocking or allowing a particular access you need to make sure you verify what is being requested before making a decision. If you are using the windows firewall try reading the following;

it will help you better understand what the firewall may be doing or how to resolve issues.
BTW, my opinion on other vendors firewalls is that I would rather rely on someone who concentrates on a few products and gets it right rather than one vendor such as MS trying to be all things to all people. I have had good luck with zone alarm, I have had a few issues as well. I think any product is likely to give you problems if you don't read up on it and prepare yourself for it first.

You say that you don't know if Windows comes with a firewall, but it is stopping a lot of things from opening.
How do you know? How do you know that the firewall is stopping things from opening? Are you getting any error messages? If so, what are they?
What things?
Firewalls do not generally stop programs from opening. They ''might'' stop a web browser from connecting to the internet, but the browser would still open and be displayed.
What things can't you open on your computer?

You know because Windows pops up warnings that programs are trying to open connections. New Windows firewall blocks outgoing connections by default, but it will allow you to pick if you want to allow it when it happens.
I wish there was a way to stop this behavior and always allow outbound connections.
