Dell Xps m1330 vs Macbook???? Which one should i buy????

by bball1 - 2/2/08 10:55 AM

im looking to buy a laptop for college over this summer and i have narrowed it down to either the dell xps m1330 or macbook. im going to be in an engineering program and the laptop will probaly have to be taken to class on occasion. i also would like to do some reasonalble gaming every once in a while. i would be getting the xps with 2.2 ghz proc, 200 gb 7200rpm, vista ulitmate, 3 gb of ram, 128 nvidia video card, and would like to get similar specs for the mac. If you have any ideas or help it would be great.

Find out what all the others are getting first. You don't want to be a Mac in an all PC class or vice versa.

You should get a macbook cause u can get a vista, xp, and OSX which is enough and it has the same specs but doesnt have an nvidia card but dont u think tht card needs more power. If ur gonna take it to class get a macbook u can get windows on it and microsoft office so really its the ultimate machine plus i had a dell and it broke on me after only like 3 years and my mother board crashed and when they sent it bak they took out my Wi-Fi card then came bak and put it in installed the driver using my CD they gave me and took it with him. Applecare is the same price but u have to go to an apple store or reseller like bestbuy and they will fix it for u. And its in the Cnet top 5

All machines break down.

While I get 4+ years easy I also am gentle, overly protective and even use my wireless keyboard and mouse when at home to save wear and tear on those parts.

Outside of those Pentium 4 based laptops I can't say that our office has had any deep issues.

Disposable Dell

Run, do not walk, far far away from Dell systems. Saying they have problems with reliability is an extreme understatement.

My family purchased 3 different series of Dells within a 1.5yr timeframe for three different types of end user. One machine was mainly for business use, one for a student's use, and another primarily for a gamer's use. All systems were custom-made, top of the line machines. All three bit the dust by 3 years after purchase. Tech support was no help at all in any of the cases. Their typical reply in all cases was "re-install the OS". Pretty silly response, especially in the case when the computer had no power. The probelms for all 3 computers can be traced to a faulty cooling system design. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that if you limit the airflow by putting the intake port on the bottom of the computer, the computer will get hot. Ultimately the heat generated will fry various components, limiting the machine's life. A class action lawsuit has been brought against Dell for exactly this problem.

So has Dell altered their systems to amend this flaw? In short, no. The poor design is still used, and machines containing this flaw still being sold.

It's ultimately a decision for each individual to make, but I for one will NEVER purchase another "disposable Dell".

Dell.

Engineering programs means Windows programs on the whole. The M1330 is a robust and good-looking notebook, which is lighter, better made and more capable than the Macbook.

Also - bear in mind that you'll need to purchase the *required* Applecare to protect your investment over your university years, as the Macbook is not fail-proof. Spend the same on the XPS and they'll come to you the next day in the case of failure, instead of you needing to mail it out to Apple and waiting upwards of two weeks to get it back.

True, the OS X platform caters better to people afraid of computers and for those who can't stop clicking on porn links. You can also find it in niche markets especially in academia - a small part of which I participate in. And yes, it's a bit cooler. But it's the case that the world runs on Windows.

If you have the budget for a Macbook, I'd definitely say spend the same money on an M1330 - you'll get a better machine, not to mention better support when you spend the same as Applecare.
