This is why I say go try one out

by Cjones269 - 2/14/08 12:18 PM In reply to: Picture quality by albeach55

This is why I say go try one out, internet connected if possible.
I am not going to try to push my likes/ dislikes on anyone I just believe people should be informed. The menus are interactive they work while the movie continues. If you want to turn on the PIP you can do this while the movie continues to play. multiple Interactive add ons can be turned on or off without stopping the movie backing out to the menu to disable the feature. connect to the internet download new clips, bonus material, even get ring tones and other things for your cell phone. These things may seem like fluff to some but it is cool to use. Also love the bookmarks these are great for a busy family. mark your spot and go back to it any time without having to search for the last part you saw. I think the whole experience adds to the movie giving you multiple ways to watch this film. There is someone out there reading this "saying I dont need all that!" Thats great you dont have to use it but it's great to know somebody has not made the choice for me.I can use/ not use as I wish and I dont have to stop the movie to use these features it's a seamless intigration.

Still unrelated to PQ

by albeach55 - 2/14/08 2:10 PM In reply to: This is why I say go try one out by Cjones269

I am aware of the capabilities of the menus on HD-DVD's, I am just uncertain as to why you stated that those menu options somehow grant HD-DVD's greater picture quality.

Also, you can access Blu-Ray menus/options while the movies is still playing as well.

Cjones is on cloud nine it seems lol...

I am glad that you like your HD-DVD player, never said that you shouldn't.

What would I have done if Blu-ray would have lost. Hmmm... that's a tough one. Not not really. Any intelligent person could see that it would not, but let's make pretend it did. Since I have a PS3 and I play games I guess I would be "stuck" with a... game system, an upconverting DVD player, and a multimedia computer. So yeah I guess I would not know what I would do.

You say that HD-DVD is flourishing overseas. Really? Everything that I have seen states that HD-DVD is being outsold overseas by a much larger margin than it was in the US.

Again, nothing wrong with HD-DVD. You get the same PQ and the xtra features that a lot of the BD owners will not have, even though I will because I have a PS3. Not that I care about special features all that much anyway, but like you said, it is better to have them than to not have them I guess.

But all of your allegiance isn't gonna change the fact that Toshiba is taking a beating with HD-DVD by having to sell their players in a firesale, with not much coming back. How long do you think they will throw money away.

I am not in love with BD the way that you are in love with HD-DVD. I just looked at both formats and what they had going for them and came to the obvious decision that BD would win, so I went BD. I shouldn't say that I went BD, because I would have bought a PS3 anyway, but I didn't buy an HD-DVD player. And that should have been evryone's biggest clue.

If the fact that BD was out selling HD-DVD 3:1 wasn't enough evidence, here is more.

Blu-ray has always had more studio support even after Paramount signed the time exclusive. Sony not only owns a movie studio but a pretty major one so that was at least one studio that would never be on HD-DVD at least until BD had six feet of dirt shoveled on it. The fact that Sony is in the movie business makes it easier for them to sway the other studios.

Most movie professionals endorsed BD from the beginning. So that means that the people that make the movies wanted it. It doesn't mean that it is the better medium, but that is kind of hard to counteract.

Lastly, and most importantly, the PS3. There is no way that HD-DVD could compete with against so many BD player being on the market aside from stand alones. Yes the XBox 360 has an HD-DVD add-on. But that means that you have to actually buy another component, find room for it on your stand, find another outlet on the powerstrip, and the $200 would make make the 360 more expensive than the PS3 when it was at it's most expensive. The PS3 gave you everything in one tower, nothing else to buy. Sony sold close to 200million PS2's. Even if the PS3 was not as successful, it was still going to put, conservatively, 30 million BD players in peoples homes, without even trying. How many people that bought a PS3, that didn't care about HD, later said well it plays BDs, maybe I should buy a couple and see what it is all about. People forget that the PS2 was the driving force behind DVDs being adopted so quickly. i know that it was my first DVD player, and it was the first for many others as well.

And no I am not selling the average consumer short. The overwhelming majority of people do not post on these kinds of forums and are not knowledgeable. If you don;'t believe that, check Monster's bank account lol.

But I digress. Enjoy your HD-DVD player and buying movies overseas. just don't think that most people know about this and would buy overseas even if they did, so most people are screwed. But not you so enjoy.

Enjoy your PS3

I also believe to each their own. I did not come here to run a lone format war on anyone but FUD starts as little things that no one corrects. I have only responded back to what I have been asked if I came on strong I apoligize for that. I tried to stay rational through these talks. As I said there is only 3% of dvd market using HD formats
IMHO the battle going on now is nothing compared to the war about to happen when dvd becomes the target. Stay well, and when its all over remember, their only movies:)

DVD vs hi-def

by albeach55 - 2/14/08 5:29 PM In reply to: Enjoy your PS3 by Cjones269

I have to agree with you regarding the (potentially) looming war between whichever hi-def format wins and plain 'ol DVDs. I think that the general public is going to be very unwilling to ungrade to another standard unless the prices are comparable with DVDs. If you've ever noticed the signs in Targets or Wal-Marts regarding the need to own an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player to actually watch the movies, I would have to guess that a good portion of the general population is relatively clueless about either hi-def format.

Blockbuster

by albeach55 - 2/15/08 10:15 AM In reply to: AFTER BLOWING $1000 on my Blue Ray player by stewart norrie

You're lucky that your Blockbuster carries Blu-Ray...mine is one of the "control" stores that doesn't, so it's an additional 10 mile drive for me to the other store in town that does carry them.

by stinman - 2/15/08 9:53 PM In reply to: JUST BUY A SONY PLAYSTATION 3, AND BE DONE WITH IT ALREADY!! by Riverledge

I bought one of these HD-A30 players and it is great,I will give it that. Now I read that Toshiba is getting ready to through in the towel.Push that s... on us and then drop it like a bad habit.Makes me sick man,I don't have tons of money and I rent movies.I do not want to own them, maybe some but you got to admit all movies are not worth 30 40 bucks in any format.I hope I can return this player tomorrow I did not send in for my 5 movies but I did watch the 2 that came with it.It up converts better than the xbox 360,I mean really good on my LG 47' new LCD.No noise like the Pioneer up convert I had(100.00)I returned it right away and they talked me into this one.Does the PS3 up convert well?To all you Blu-Ray fans,I mean no noise in the picture. Can anyone tell me that? I got till the 18th to return.

Toshiba Quits Too

by no_floaters - 2/16/08 6:05 AM In reply to: This whole sucks loudly to me!! by stinman

Toshiba called it quits after Wal-Mart says they'll stop carrying the HD-DVD players. Blu-Ray is the winner.

by albeach55 - 2/16/08 2:52 PM In reply to: This whole sucks loudly to me!! by stinman

Yes, the PS3 will upconvert DVD's up to 1080p, and it does it very well.
