too many mp3 players to choose..please help

by bhurx - 2/13/08 9:46 PM

My Sandisk e140 broke(nearly got 2 years out of it). I'm using my son's old Creative 512 nano. I've got 'tons' of music(from all different sources) stored in Windows Media Player 11. I need a player that can drag & play music onto the player, easy(just like the Sandisk and Creative). What's out here? I thought of the Zune, but I read that not all music can be dragged onto the player. Is this true? I was looking at a Sony or Samsung, but they only go as high as 8G. I want something that's as easy to drag music, has a decent amount of memory(so I can store a movie or two...without any problems), has decent battery life, and has a FM tuner. What's the answer?

depends on what you want

if you want high capacity the archos 605 wifi (linux based => drag and drop) is a good choice, comes in different capacities. If that one is too expensive try the 604, has removable battery, stay away from wifi for battery life. iriver clix has good ratings + radio (but small HD), or just get an ipod and use Floola, very simple way to add music without iTunes. please stay AWAY from zune, not worth the trouble. Creative Zen has a good radio and some size, check out http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1894257&CatId=2476
ugly but works well

Creative Zen

Get the creative zen, just the plain zen. it comes in 4gb , 8gb, 16 gb, and now, or soon 32gb. It is a flash player and I believe you can drag and drop as all creative plays do this

Zen, uh, yeah

I was considering the Zen myself, but apparently, people are having a boatload of problems with them, including the "White Screen of Death."

If all your music is available on WMP11, then I'd say Zune. While it is not drag-and-drop, the Zune software syncs all music from WMP11 automatically onto the Zune library. So although you may not get the benefits of drag-and-drop, at least the Zune will keep your music collection nice and tidy and always available for syncing onto your Zune player. So,in a sense, the Zune software actually makes your life easier. But unfortunately, you won't be able to use any other program. Still, that's not a huge deal since (in my experience), the Zune software works quite nicely. Aside from this issue, the Zune 80 more than meets your requirements (especially since the radio actually lists song titles).

But if you absolutely need drag-and-drop, then stick with Sony. I have a Walkman S610 and it is amazing. Custom EQ and 33 hrs of battery life: my music has never sounded better. True, both the A180 and S160 series max out at 8GB, but I heard that Sony is planning to release a 16GB version of the A180's. Not sure when, but keep an eye out. But a safer bet may be the 8GB S160 since it actually has radio.

not 100%

but I'm quite sure Zune only syncs with Zune Software and not Windows Media Player

I agree - go for the Sony

The Sony MP3 players have excellent sound quality, especially when you turn on ClearBass and get the EQ just the way you like it.

And they are drag 'n' drop; on Linux you can also use the program Blacklight which encodes video files as well.

(yeah, I'm the author of the program. lol)

Note that you'll only get 33 hours of battery life if you turn down the backlight, turn off all audio processing and only listen to music with no screensaver :-) But battery life is still good otherwise.

Sansa View (if movies are priority) or Sansa e280 (expnd it)

by Craig Kirkwood - 2/16/08 8:24 AM In reply to: too many mp3 players to choose..please help by bhurx

Why not stay with the Sansa line? You already know it well.
View - if movies are priority
e280 - expand it to 10GB (but cannot store movies on expansion)

sansa view or sansa e280

Thanks for the info. Excuse my ignorance, but what's the difference between the sansa view and the sansa e280? If they're both 8GB(which isn't bad storage space), can't you download and watch movies on either?

Sansa View

Has a 2.4" screen while the e280 has a 1.8" screen. The e280 has a user-replaceable battery while the View does not. You can watch movies on both. Although with screens that small, would you really want to? Maybe on the View. Not so much on the e280. But that's personal preference.

there's more

by JonTitor - 2/16/08 6:04 PM In reply to: sansa view or sansa e280 by bhurx

the View is thinner, comes in 16GB and 32GB also, the screen is also higher resolution
the e200 cannot play various formats like the View, only clips on a proprietary format
