I just stopped by my local Comp USA and had some fair deals (as they are going out of business) and picked up an Acer Quad-core tower for a reasonable price. Obviously it came with Vista...home premium to be exact. I would like to use this box primarily as a server...i will probably do ftp, ssh, counter-strike server to name a few......so here is my question......what operating system would you suggest I use to take advantage of all 4 cores and all 2gb of ram that is has......and specifically what version should i use or wat type of distro should i use?
fyi: ik having an ssh server will require linux, but that is not imperative.
hiya! Glitch 485 ...
I'm certainly not a (cyber)spokesperson for WINDOWZ , Linux , or OS* , but I feel Microsoft has alot of explaining to do for its 'beta' -release of Vista ... I , for one would give Linux , OpenSUSE LINUX a closer view ... There's lottsa new and exciting things in the LINUX OS ... As I recall , they even had a 'working' 64bit LINUX OS out a long time ago ... Check it out !!!
Oh yeah , I've been Linuxed since OpenSuse9.2 ...
Whoooa!!!gotta(cyber)RUN!!!
herrwitt!
If you want any easy to use distribution, try Fedora, SuSE, or Ubuntu.
The BSD distros also come with smp support- dragonfly being specialized for it.
SSH can be done with either a linux/gnu or a bsd distro; just that the bsd will be more secure- also will be more challenging to set up.
