Vista Microsoft Mail PROBLEM, Won't Auto Complete Right

by gturn - 2/12/07 8:26 AM

Windows Vista Microsoft Mail. Updated from XP to Vista Premium.
Has any one had a problem with Auto Complete when entering e-mail addresses in the Send To area. I have Auto Complete turned on, but on about half of the addresses in my address book it doesn't find them when you start typing the names. My wife is about to shoot me and wants Outlook Express back, she can't choose people to send emails to by typing their names. I tried it to and it just doesn't work right. Any Help? It only works on about half of the names.

Computer: Dell 2GB Ram, 250GB HD, 3GHz CPU, Vista Certified Machine.

e-mail problem

by csec - 2/26/07 8:43 AM In reply to: Vista Microsoft Mail PROBLEM, Won't Auto Complete Right by gturn

We have the same problem. I am sorry that this reply is not helpful. Just wanted you to know that you are not alone! My husband wants to throw out the new computer and start over! We get the auto reply to work sometimes and then other times it will not.

Another problem we had was my husband's e-mail folders all disappeared and can not be found. Luckily it was just a few days worth and our Guru was able to get the old e-mail folders off our old hard drive.
Anyboday experience this problem?

Our main Vista problems so far are e-mail/internet related.

Auto Complete Problem with Vista Windows Mail

by sherryg - 3/9/07 10:59 AM In reply to: e-mail problem by csec

I have noticed the same problem. It appears that Windows Mail doesn't look at the Contacts to determine auto complete. My observation is that it will only provide auto complete help for email addresses you have already used.

I'm finding the quirky differences between Outlook Express and Windows Mail to be extremely annoying.

Windows Mail Will Not AutoComplete

by AndreRM - 11/30/07 11:51 PM In reply to: windows mail autocomplete does not work properly by faralischta

Same problem here. It will sometimes autocomplete when you enter the email address. It almost never - for me - autocompletes when I begin to enter the name of the addressees.

This feature is so erratic, it drives me up the wall. Ninety percent of the time I have to goto the address book to enter an address.

Where is Microsoft in all this?

hit the CHECK button in the toolbar to save you from having to open the address book. EMAIL me if you find a better solution!

well, just another one of microsoft's "better" ideas

by gkeramidas - 2/8/08 11:22 PM In reply to: Vista Microsoft Mail PROBLEM, Won't Auto Complete Right by gturn

in their infinite wisdom, ms chose to mimic the use of outlook's autocomplete, which is totally useless in my opinion.

it uses the registry to track the used addresses, whereas outlook express looked up the address in the address book. (Outlook actually uses a file on the hard drive, but it’s similar)

so, i believe you have a maximum of 29 addresses to be recalled, then they cycle out. if you get a bad address or an address that you only use once, and never use more than 29 addresses, they're stuck in there forever, unless you know where to edit the registry.

now, to me, this is just plain stupid and i voiced my concerns during the beta, but just like all of my other criticisms of dumb changes in vista, it fell on deaf ears.

Here’s the key, but the values are in hex, so you have to click on the values and read the translation. Then you can delete an unwanted address. Or just delete the entire key to remove them and start over.

Windows Mail Auto-Complete Problem

by bamahawkeye - 9/30/09 9:18 AM In reply to: well, just another one of microsoft's "better" ideas by gkeramidas

I have found that if I start typing a name in the To: bar in an email I'm composing and the auto-complete feature doesn't bring up the email address for me, I just continue typing the first and last name and hit the ENTER key, and the email address comes up. On the rare occasion where this doesn't work (i.e., a couple's email address is listed under the husband's name in my Contacts, and I'm entering the wife's name), I then click on the To: button and add the email address(es) that way.

Hi

Its very irritating I have talked to MS....here is what they wrote..I asked for a link to the article..so far they have not anserved- ( if anyone can help pls. let me know)

Hello, Søren

I ask for your problem with windows mail and I get this answer:

The Windows Mail remembers only 20 mail recipients, so that is the reason why your old mail contacts don’t show automatically for sender list.

There is KB-Article in the Microsoft website for this

Workaround

by Ducott - 4/21/08 4:44 AM In reply to: Vista Microsoft Mail PROBLEM, Won't Auto Complete Right by gturn

I too am frustrated by this, but at least I found this solution that works somewhat. Lets sey you have a contact name Henry Jackson and that contact has an email address associated with it, what you can do is this: Start new email, type the first 3 letters of the name EG "Hen" then hit Tab ... the address should now read from the contacts list and autocomplete. From what I have heard, this is the only way AND only works if you can remember the persons name..

Thanks Rob for that tip

That works great.
Microsoft has no plans on fixing the auto complete, so this is a great help.

Windows Mail auto complete does not work

by Magicmargie - 8/17/08 8:58 PM In reply to: Thanks Rob for that tip by mopscare42

While I appreciate any tips on working around this issue, I think Toshiba and other computer manufacturers who load Windows Vista/Windows Mail on their computers should put the pressure on Microsoft to remedy this situation. They were able to handle this matter (auto complete address) in Office Express; if Windows Mail is better they need to prove it!!!

THANK YOU!! This is a great tip. Not a real fan of Vista so far, but this has been the most annoying issue to date. Of course, I just started working with this OS so I'm sure my frustration has only just begun! Thanks again for helping solve problem #1.
