Hi guys,
Just a quick question.
Ive got a 360 currently hooked up to my pc monitor using the vga cable - However I want to be able to watch movies etc through the 360 onto my tv screen as well. Ive searched high and low for a cable that can split the video output but I can't seem to find anything. I don't want to have to keep moving the cables and 360 about each time I want to do this, any ideas?
Cheers!
A simple y-cable for the VGA output should do you just fine. Check at your local Radio Shack to see if they have anything in stock. If not, there's an online store... Cables to Go I think it is, that has a lot of otherwise hard to find cables.
As stated by the other poster, you will need some type of y connector to split your VGA output cable.
Remember to check the type of inputs you have available on your TV. Any new lcd/plasma/hdtv should have a vga input however, an older tube tv will likely only have RCA(yellow/red/white) available. You should be able to get a cable that converts vga on one end to RCA Video(yellow) on the other end.
Lastly, remember that vga does not carry audio. If you don't already have the audio from the xbox hooked into a sterio system then you will need to get another splitter for the audio. this should be quite simple as the VGA cables for the xbox already have the wight and red rca cables, so get yourself a y splitter for these and a nice long run of rca audio cables for this.
I know it sounds like alot but it will make perfect sense when you have it all wired up.
Let us know how you make out.
#1 - guy appears to be in the UK so Radioshack's ain't that commonplace.
#2 - He didn't give us enough details for openers, but he did say he's using some sort of cable to his VGA-in on a PC monitor. That means 360 Video Out to DB15 VGA In on a PC. I've never seen that cable myself but I've never had a call to hook at 360 to a PC so that strikes me as a little weird but workable.
So he wants to watch stuff on his regular TV screen as well as use the PC monitor. Might as well play games too at times presumably? In order to do that he's asking if there's a cable that's a 360 out to 2 video out feeds - never seen that either. If he's using the TV/HDTV cable to RCA leads and then some conversion cable to the PC VGA DB15, wherever that cable came from should carry the ability and/or splitters to do the job.
Without a better description of his setup, it's near impossible to just guess RCA splitters will work. They also allow more signal degredation as well as potential interference over longer hauls. We don't know how far away the TV even is? That's a huge piece of info to have.
Options are the simple splitters and 2 cables, but better options are splitter boxes that take the one component-in signal from the 360 and divide/boost/equalize it out to 2 or up to 4 outputs that he can re-use (we think) his VGA conversion cable and then just regular cabling to feed the TV.
Hey, is that TV HDTV? European on PAL and not NTSC? Biggies to know right there, USA stuff won't help him on UK setups. I can list 5 great cabling places online I use all the time but they're pointless to a Brit trying to do this.
So more details and then better solutions instead of guesses!
Sorry for my late reply, To cover some questions -
Yep im in the UK so radioshack isn't a possibility, although I source all my stuff from online anyway so thats not a problem. At the moment ive got the 360 hooked up to a KVM switch that I have my pc and vga monitor attached to, letting me flip between the both at the push of a button.
My tv is pal, normal non-flatscreen tv with scart/rca inputs. It's about 2-3m away from my actual 360/vga monitor.
Ive attempted to try this myself using a vga splitter so that one is going to the kvm switch and the other to a vga>scart lead then running the scart to my tv but I don't get any signal on the tv and the vga output on my monitor has a slight noise distortion when the scart>vga lead is attached.
Hope this extra info is better, and thanks for all the replys!
Speaking from experience on hooking up may things to my TV, y splitters will reduce the video quality.
