HD DVD is toast

by medialover - 2/1/08 6:55 PM In reply to: Poll: In your opinion, do you think HD DVD has a chance? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

No, HD DVD is going under, from what I see. Why would it not go under? Blu-ray has the identical data format and copy-protection. It is superior technology, being able to hold 25GB rather than 15GB. Plus, more studios are moving to blu-ray, and momentum lies in that direction. For HD DVD to win, all those studios would have to spend millions to switch back, and I highly doubt that's going to happen. Also, PS3 uses blu-ray for their games, helping entrench it even more. I see no future of HD DVD; i think it will meet the same fate as betamax.

I don't give a crap

Hi I have enough trouble convincing any of my family to pay attention to the picture format ratio i.e. is it widescreen (which one) or 4:3 if I had to go through the pain of explaining HD in any format I would have to kill them.
I worked in engineering for 28 years in the BBC so I know how much effort is put into broadcasting a good picture News notwithstanding of course and then I go into peoples houses and see the sort of picture they are putting up with or indeed worse believe is correct it is painful to see.
I honestly believe all that most people want to be able to say is I have HD or I told you Blue ray would win etc.
I watch very little TV these days and only wdescreen with family if it's 4:3 I have to be on my own.
Yours Phil Powell

Maybe

HD-DVD as a consumer format is now dead. Apart from the actual movies going away from HD-DVD, there's now been so much bad publicity that consumers will insist on Blu-ray.

However, the companies that backed Beta all those years ago didn't just lie down and die. They moved into the professional market, with Betacam. I expect that the HD-DVD consortium will create a new triple-layer format for professional mastering or something like that. HD-DVD will live on, but in a completely different market segment.

HD DVD is as good as dead,

Blu-Rau is the better technology. The prices will drop as demand increases, so that should not be a concern.

Someday...

The VCR didn't make it, regular DVD players are slowly fading out, we lost cassette tapes and the 8-track. It's only a matter of time before HD-DVD's (and blu-ray) are replaced with some new technology wonder...

Hey, It's ALL Still Working In Our House.

by SinbadSailor - 2/3/08 7:20 PM In reply to: Someday... by rabohablo

Our VCR tapes are alive and well and many are already converted to DVD with my Sony MC5 DVD Recorder which we also use with our CamCorder and recording live TV and other DVDs. Nothing's obsolete unless YOU think it is, Buster!!! The only reason manufacturers keep replacing technology is because they know all of YOU out there are going to opt for the new stuff to try to keep believing you're still young and able to keep up! Do you think I should replace my 27 year old 30' Sailboat just to keep up with your "Smurfs"? Not a chance (it has full DVD and computer access to ALL my tunes going back to my 33-1/3 collection that I wouldn't trade for a million bucks!) HooHah!

America thinks its the world?

by ViroCMN - 2/4/08 3:48 AM In reply to: they will both lose! by Dani210

Not every1 lives in the USA, there is such a thing as the rest of the world... anyway in little sunny South Africa we don't have streaming video yet. With a HD-TV u can record and watch your tv show when-ever u choose. U still need the storage facility, so NO THEY WON"T BOTH LOOSE!!!

HD DVD might have a chance if we don't allow ourselves to be led by those who write the "news". We know they don't like Microsoft. I want the BEST HD player to win, not the annointed one. If Blu-Ray is the better machine, then so be it; but, the two formats need to duke it out themselves, without Big Media swaying public opinion.

The wild card

by cardmaster53 - 2/4/08 10:19 AM In reply to: Poll: In your opinion, do you think HD DVD has a chance? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I voted a maybe only because I would not rule out Micro$oft finding a last minute way to subsidize HD DVD player sales and creating "incentive$" for studios to go dual format support.

But I would prefer HD DVD have a quick slide to obscurity.

Fire sale

by Ubergang - 2/4/08 9:56 PM In reply to: Poll: In your opinion, do you think HD DVD has a chance? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The HD DVD group isn't "fighting back with rock bottom prices." They're moving merchandise that will soon be worthless. It is better to get a little bit for something than to get nothing for something. After July, they'll have to give the HD DVD players away.

I own a HD DVD and love it. I will not own another PHONY product in my life. Read reviews of the PS 3 warranty and any other product and you will see that Sony is really a company that wants all your money and could care less if you like them. I lost money with a Front projector that they claimed was not warranted for I got it dirty by not replacing the filter before the replace filter light came on. A wanted 2500.00 to fix it OUT of warranty. I hear they are doing the same to PS3 owners now. GO HD DVD I will back you to the end. Let the other fools out there throw away good money for something that is overpriced and has no real warranty
