Virus posing as anti-virus utility:

by ironhoss - 1/31/08 1:40 PM

I purchased my Sony laptop with 104GB hard drive in Oct.06 which came pre-loaded with Norton anti virus free for 6o days, I decided to up-grade to Norton 07 after the trial version, since it seemed to be recommended since it was pre installed. Flash forward to Aug. last year after moderate usage and I get a warning that my hard drive is full, knowing that it should not be I decide to back up all my files and pictures since I think I have caught a virus. The total of my back-up I could fit on 1DVD and 1CD so what happened to all my space? I called Sony and their response was to do a total restore but they could not give me a definite answer if this would happen again, not the answer I was looking for, there has to be a reason for this! Thinking a virus had slipped by Norton 07; when they advised me to upgrade to Norton 360; I did it. That was a mistake since the program would not update, I spent 13 hours with the tech support trying to resolve this, finally got it working then it would not stop and kept telling me to restart for the updates to take effect every day. Finally I had enough and downloaded the uninstall tool from Norton and got rid of it.
Prior to this my chkdisc would not run, after uninstall it ran the next time I started my computer; Norton must have been stopping it. It found 16 errors and tried to correct them. Also when I defragmented my hard drive there were 16 or more volumes of files it could not defragment, when you add all these up they totalled more than my hard drive. These had the file name starting with symclogs, also I found a folder on C drive with all these files in it and it was huge. I called Sony and asked them what that file means since I am not computer savy and they told me it was a symantic file. I did a search of symclogs and found other people had this problem and found a solution from a gardening web forum in UK. Stated as follows; start the computer in safe mode and delete this folder with all it's contents, it is too big to fit in the recycling bin so you are asked if you want to permantly delete it, I said yes and it took almost 20 min. to complete. After this I checked the amount of space available on my drive it is 98% free. I ran chkdisc and found no errors and de-fragmented the drive and the volumes which showed up before are gone.
In my opinion the problem is Norton hi-jacking my computer,(and to think I paid for that)with all these symclog files, why they allow this to happen to the average user is beyond me. No more Norton for me, it truly is buyer beware!

Yes

But it's not only Norton.

Windows and apps like to squirrel things away.

If you don't ride herd on this stuff your HD will vanish.

HD makers love this stuff....they smile all the way to the bank as users buy a bigger HD.

So it's not buyer beware but user beware.

Addendum to Bob's Post, Get CCleaner! It's Free &

by tobeach - 1/31/08 11:47 PM In reply to: Virus posing as anti-virus utility: by ironhoss

will clean out temp files, index .dat (history) files & much, much more.
Excepting the first clean which is often quite large, it does it all in under 5 seconds. Yours should be fairly quick. Get "Slim" Version. :

Additionally, IF & When clean & running well, it often pays to periodically dump your sys restore files. They can build to about 12% of
HD (default). I've reset mine back to 3% of 80G HD with no problems. I manually create 1 per day. Enjoy!! :-)

I hate Norton Anti Virus

by ncmale1949 - 2/2/08 5:12 AM In reply to: Virus posing as anti-virus utility: by ironhoss

I used to use norton for years.
One day a freind told me about avast anti virus.i always had probblems with norton,so I went to cnet.com and down loaded avast free version.
I ran the software and it found several hidden viruses on my hard drive and removed them.
I also tried Microsofts windows defender, don't waste your money on that as well.
Look for avast home edition free version. There are few things I dislike about it but so far it is my anti virus program and will be along timedown the road

Norton is OK but Avast is free

by somanyroads - 2/2/08 3:26 PM In reply to: Virus posing as anti-virus utility: by ironhoss

I have seen the problem you describe once in Ten years of fixing computers a lot of people find norton to be very good. I never did find out why that computer has a massive amount of space taken up with their folder. However I suspect that its a rare bug maybe caused by a faulty update (not mush help if you the unlucky 1 in 1,000,000). As it is I would recommend Avast....its free and its far from being pants.

Same thing happened with Symantec

by SOPADEFADEO - 2/3/08 1:23 AM In reply to: Virus posing as anti-virus utility: by ironhoss

The exact same thing happened to my computer a year ago, and I had to re-format my entire computer, lost tons of pictures, emails, etc. And they (Norton) had the actual Gall (i'd rather use the word that rhymes- but hey, tryin' to be being proper here) to claim it was inside an inner "company issue." Those were the very words they used; Saying, "A glitch" had been recently reported, so they claimed.
I woulnd't trust them ever. They completely hi-jacked my browser, and removed IE, and for what reason? They got no money, so it was just some brat, bored and destructive, and employed by one of the biggest corporations of the so-called "anti-viral trust-us removal-campaign."
What a joke.Campaign alright, in the ass.

Norton... Bam! Right in the Kisser

by Mijo2much - 2/3/08 11:52 AM In reply to: Same thing happened with Symantec by SOPADEFADEO

I used Norton product since they were in DOS 3.1. Great, usefull stuff.. then in the 90's we needed protection I used Norton, but I the problem that really got me was the lack of support for any product more then 3 years old. And more often then not, every 4 years I would need to buy new Norton software (along with the yearly $).. which BTW they never have a consistent price on, you can always look for them selling the $39 annual package for $19... I switched to Avast in 2004... never looked back. I have not had a single problem. However the best complement I can give Avast is that I installed it in my Mom’s computer... she has never had a problem... dump Norton, send the annual fee to your favorite charity.

Norton

The first thing I used to do when any member of my family got a new computer, was to delete all the "JUNK" and then download Avast. Have been doing this for about last three years. Now that I know better, we order all of our new computers built by a terrific dealer in Penfield, New York. Now we never get norton, aol etc.

norton

by bballer15 - 2/3/08 10:43 PM In reply to: Virus posing as anti-virus utility: by ironhoss

Hi
i saw your problem with your norton anitvirus
i have had experiences with virus scanners being affected, mine being McAfee. So i have two antiviruses now and they seem to work fine. I advise not to use Norton though because i have heard it can be hacked very easily.
there is a anti virus called Node that is very good. It uses minimal requirements and runs in the background, i was very impressed, i was able to run it while playing games, yes i still play games, lol. k good luck

TRY THIS FOR A MALWARE FREE PC!!

by Maiyan820 - 2/3/08 11:25 PM In reply to: Virus posing as anti-virus utility: by ironhoss

Hi there, Ironhoss. If you want to try something that will NEVER give you problems again, try either one of the 2 ESET internet security solutions. The NOD 32 Anti virus & the ESET Smart Security Suit are absolutely excellent products. You will receive no pop-ups whatsoever with these ESET Internet Security Solutions. These products also do NOT need a pat on the back every so often for the supposedly good work they are doing. You have to look no further than the prestigious Virus Bulletin 100 awards, to see for yourself that ESET IS THE CURRENT WORLD LEADER IN INTERNET SECURITY. Their products come at a very competative price tag for the excellent protection you will acquire. The company, moreover, offers a potential customer a 30 day trial period to see for him/herself how the products perform. You can also go to the CNET most popular download section and see there just how popular this company has become in this field. The last time I looked there, there were more than 1000000 downloads of the ESET products. I think that this should tell you something. I am sorry to say this, but Symantic's Norton is simply hopelessly outclassed by the NOD and my prediction is that not a few people who are currently using that particular internet security application, are going to find out what you have experienced, rather sooner than later.
I am positive that if you will only give the NOD a try, that you will never have another internet security problem.
Respectfully yours
Maiyan Viljoen.
