The best mobile Web browser(s)

by powersville21 - 2/3/08 6:27 AM

I'd like to hear opinions about what the best Web browser is for smart phones. I just bought a Samsung BlackJack II 3G smart phone from AT&T (for just $99). The operating system is Windows Mobile 6 and the browser is Internet Explorer.

Though mobile sites render fine, some regular non-optimized sites look garbled. Wikipedia articles show up misformatted, with each line only containing 3 or 4 words, so it is quite a chore to read through a lengthy article. CNET's own TV.com site also gets scrambled up slightly. The TV.com forums page gets cut off on the right side. Even moving the page view over to the right doesn't let me see the missing columns. I tried Fit to Screen view and Full Page settings.

I've heard about the Opera Mobile browser so I downloaded the trial version. It seems to work better for the non-mobile sites. The TV.com forums page shows up completely, and full functionality of that site is available using the Opera Mobile browser.

Has anyone else experimented with different mobile Web browsers? I've played around with the Apple browser on the iPhone at the Apple store. It looks interesting but I'm not so caught up with the touch screen and the virtual keyboard. (The lack of 3G Internet is disappointing too.) In any case, I don't have the iPhone nor do I intend to get one soon, so this question is for Windows Mobile-compatible browsers only.

The free trial for Opera Mobile lasts 30 days. After that, I have to register the program for $24. Right now, I'm leaning toward doing just that, but I'd like to see if there are any other good choices. Mozilla has the Minimo mobile browser project but that is far from being ready. The current version is 0.2 and I don't think it even qualifies as a beta at this point.

And go get a look at the iPod itouch browser or even the iPhone. Opera and that are the best short of a small laptop.

Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition

Not sure exactly what you are looking for but this one I used in on a visit to friends in Bulgaria. It can be loaded on a Flash Drive and used on other computers without leaving traces of your browsing. Best of all it's FREE! I found it very useful... there are also portable anti-viruses that can be used along with it.

Hope this helps!

Firefox Portable is a Portable Firefox for Windows. It is not for mobile phones. Portable Firefox can be installed on a usb or hard drive. It doesn't leave anything from files to registries.

Opera Mobile, Iris. Try those.

There is a blog, discussion about firefox on windows mobile. I only found it since I'm writing some Windows Mobile thing on VS2008. I doubt it will be out soon but there is someone running it.

Thanks for the correction.
