I have a samsung sports camcorder, and take the video from that and convert it from it's proprietary format (some unusual avi encoding) using ulead (which crashes frequently, but is the only software that understands the avi codec I have), to .mpg. (side note; the output file is larger than the input. why?) From there, I've been using windows movie maker to rotate the video (it's sideways) and do simple effects. But now, for some reason, it has quit working, and just plays a blank screen with no audio. Anybody know of free, simple video editing software that might work with .mpg? I can also convert to .wmv and .mov, but even windows movie maker doesn't recognize these file types.. Thanks, Brian
Try gimp with gap
To convert it into an editable format I would suggest MPEG Streamclip. It is a free program from Squared 5 for Windows and Mac users. http://www.squared5.com/
I use it to convert mp4 and mp2 videos from my flash drive camcorders.
It has been pretty good about convert .avi formats as well.
Once you bring it into the program you can convert it to standard .avi, wvm or .mov. There are other export formats as well.
It will make your life a whole lot easier.
