Yes.
The main reason would be because I'm an environmental scientist (not officially, I'm still in college), and the knowledge that someone might be having a power shortage (which occur now & then in my country [Malawi]) while I'm wasting it. So I usually run on battery when working with simple stuff (word, exel...) and I use ac when running applications that pushes the pc to its limits (or close to)
Why not? Waste not - want not. Act locally, think globally. I am a considerate person - not just of others but of everything. If I use it, I must pay for it, which is being responsible. Also, I was taught to take care of everything I have; if I leave it on all the time, I'm thinking it will need to be replaced sooner. Since I'm on SSDI, there is nothing extra.
I've been turning computers on and off like lightbulbs for almost 20 years and haven't killed one yet. That is: if I am in the room/in the house, and anticipate coming back shortly, the light stays on. If I'm finished in that room, I shut it off.
I have no standby/hibernate on this machine. I don't use it on my laptop, either, though I do shut down the monitors on both machines.
Re heat generated? I use the computer and incandescents to aid my electric furnace in the winter. A nice warm CPU? Yum!
Seriously, the fixtures in my computer room will not take CFLs (old fixtures) so they are still burning on Edison specials.
Oh, btw, the electric bill on my all electric house was $110 last month, and that includes use around the holidays.
I turn off my computer when not in use. If I'm only going to be away a short time, I sometimes use standby (I turn off the modem). I see a lot of responses about leaving it on reducing wear and tear on hardware, etc., however, this is not the issue it once was with computers years ago. The internal power distribution has greatly improved in today's computers, not causing the damaging "surge" through the electronics that was once a problem. The possibility of damage from overheating of components is a much greater risk, as well as from unmonitored internet connection.
I'm not using my PC constantly, so I don't see why I should not shut it down when not in use (hibernate 50 Watt ,on 80 Watt and charged about 100Watt, measured with powermeter). I turn off the lights also when there is no need!
I even installed a multiple socket with interruptor to cut all the poweradapters of the peripherials (printer, scanner, USB hub, USB HD's,sound system,..) with just one switch. It is only a gain of 25 Watt but it gives me also a save feeling.
When my PC is shutted down it still consumes 10Watt when not cutted off with the power swith. This switch I only leave on when an automatic startup is programmed for recording...
So, it is true, the energy savings are not so terrific but it is also SAVE.
About energy consumption: last year I read an article about internet's power consumption. At that moment the internet servers and networkcomputers were estimated to use 57 GIGAWATT continue, or 3.5 % of the worldwide electricity production.. and that is without all business and individual home computers... I think every little helps!
I have always shut down my system when not in use.it was a habit I got into when security was not very good way back then in the 90`s,but now I do it to save power and it really is just habit .Never caused any problems re cold starting in either Win 95-98-XP in fact my computers out live my sons and familys which are on all the time.
There's just too d*mn many people. Some day when people reach a sufficient level of intelligence they will realize that having more children than two is a crime against humanity and nature. We're not an uncontrollably spreading virus, or are we???
Saves energy; less wear on the computer's fans & motor; avoids possible surges; insures proper shut down.
Been leaving computers on almost constantly for about two years now.
More convenient to me I guess. I only shut it down/hibernate when I am out for extended periods of time.
As a Linux user I have no reason to turn off my machine or reboot. Also with the new machines on the market power consumption is so low that they do not contribute to power bills (hair dryers cost more than 5 computers staying on all the time). As for Hard drives and other hardware the off-on cycle is more damaging than letting them run.
As for my laptop running Vista of course I turn it off when done..like now.
cheers
I have a number of applications that I run when I'm not around, so I don't always turn off my computers. One PC is rarely turned off as I donate CPU time to Folding@Home; http://folding.stanford.edu/. All my PC's are configured to shut down the monitor after 20 minutes of non-use.
Hi, several years ago, I was on the phone with tech support for my computer, and while resolving a minor software problem, I heard a loud pop from my computer, and saw a shower of sparks flying out from the back of the box, near the top. The sparks blew against the wall and then fell down behind the desk onto the carpet. It turns out that something in the power supply blew, and the fan was blowing the sparks out the back. I immediately dropped the phone on the floor, crawled under the desk to yank the cord from the outlet. After picking the phone up, the tech support guy asked me what that pop sound was, I told him, and then he knew why I threw the phone down!
I beleive that if I had not been there in the room, there's a good chance I might have had a fire starting in my home. No circuit breaker tripped, no fuse blew, I reacted quickly, but I don't know how long that shower of sparks might have continued had I not been there to pull the plug. I admit there's a small chance of that happening, but at my house, when we are not doing something with the computers, we turn them OFF.

I turn my computer off for a myriad of reasons...all of which have been mentioned. Not only do I shut off the computer itself, but I turn off the power strip that it and all periferals (including cable modem) are plugged into (I have a whole house power surge protector on my electric meter). Been doing it for YEARS every day/night when I'm finished doing "my thing". I've had no adverse affects on my hardware or software what-so-ever. ![]()
Yes, I do shut-down when my PC is not in use. On my machine the following consumption figures (rounded) apply:
In use: 200 watt
On standbye: 100 watt
Hibernation: 10 watt
I always turn off my computer after use, except, on the odd occassion when I leave my computer for not more than two hours, I place it on standby.
