I own both, a 720p Pioneer Kuro 5080, and a 1080p Vizio LCD. and yes there is a difference. The Vizio does have better detail, but the contrast ratio is not even close to the Pioneer. There have been many times that I was watching a show in the bedroom on the 42" Vizio and thinking this is really a great picture, then I walk out to the family room and see the same show on the Pioneer and it just looks a lot better. So my answer is sometimes 720p can look better than 1080p depending on the brand and type (LCD, DLP, Plasma) of the TV.
The best would be a 1080p high end brand such as Pioneer, or maybe Sony or Samsung in LCD, but you will pay for them, and in my opinion the money may not be worth it. That's why I decided to save $1500.00, and I bought the 720p instead of the 1080p Pioneer.
My CRT-RP HDTV has 3 native scanning modes 540p, 720p and 1080i.
I can tell the difference between ABC 720p broadcasts and NBC/CBS 1080i Broadcasts!! Not because of the pixels but because the 720p does a much better job of displaying fast motion and there is less compression of the video stream at 720p. John
The man at J & R suggested Sony KDL40XBRX; I countered with the Pioneer Kuro PDP4280HD. He suggested the Panasonic TH42p2700U. A
friend RAVES about the Mitsubishi LT-40134 40" LCD. Does anyone have
experience with the Mitsubishi? It is 1080p...the Pioneer is 720p plasma. You know the others. This is for a bedroom, no gaming, definitely movies, maybe computer, definitely BluRay/hiDef (tho' we do not own them yet) We will be reclining with the TV
5 to 10 feet away (wall/swivel stand). Assume that the prices are similar. HELP! & thank you in advance.
The absolute best picture will be from the Pioneer Kuro and then the Panasonic. At 42", do not waste your time worrying about 1080p capability. The Pioneer will play 1080p BluRay disks and look better than any other TV on the market save for the Pioneer 1080p sets at 50".
Mitsubishi does not actually make their own LCD's. I'm not sure who their supplier is, but I suspect it is Toshiba. The only Japanse LCD maker worth considering (and then at a big reduction in quality from Pioneer PDP) would be Sharp.

Okay, I have showed this to everyone I know...
Anyone have final thoughts on the subject?
Thank you!
A well filmed and encoded 1080p movie will knock your socks off.
However I have seen badly encoded HD media that almost has no right to call itself HD (the first blue ray release of Full Metal Jacket comes to mind). Furthermore, I have lots of 480i DVD’s that upscale beautifully to 1080p and look much better than the “720p HD” I have downloaded from Xbox Marketplace and the HD content I have seen over cable. (720 HD that has been compressed to keep it small might as well not be labeled “HD” either).
So yes, you can see the difference sitting 7 feet away (I have a 46” screen). But there are factors other than resolution at play.
... I want to see a difference and therefore, I do.
