Meat....

by Rollbar - 1/23/08 11:12 AM In reply to: I don't think he needs to. by jostenmeat

<<<For those of us who are truly paranoid>>>

I would say, obsessive compulsive might better describe the state of mind. :-)

Of course I mean that in the most friendly terms and said it with a smile on my face. After all how can anyone one with a 470 DVD collection call another obsessive compulsive? lol

I have been reading the posts...

I got the Sony for 350 and it has been good so far. Dead quiet and a nice understated design. I have updated the firmware on it and it loads discs a lot faster

However, there is a rumor floating around that the PS3 might be getting a price drop to 299 on the 28th of January. If it turns out to be true, don't think I wont be tempted to take it back and give the PS3 a go. If the fan truly is a problem in my media cabinet, I should know within the first 30 days and can always return it.

I've already had a few weird issues though. On Lost Season 3 Disc One, if I click "top menu" the screen goes blank and the player is unresponsive to anything other than the open close button.

Do these kinds of issues occur with basically all HD players including the PS3?

Why bother?

by mrmarco1 - 1/26/08 2:07 PM In reply to: Is now the time for a Blue-Ray player? by minimalist

Blue-ray, why bother? And that goes for HD-DVD, too.

I still have a fortune tied up in VHS tapes, some of which have been replaced with DVDs. Now I have another fortune tied up in DVDs. At least they can be played on the new HD players. I'm not against new technology. I don't have to participate, though.

I prefer the idea of download rentals. For a nominal fee, download, watch, it disappears. I don't have to store it. It won't get scratched and stop playing. My friends won't forget to return them.

I suppose if the price drops under $100 I would buy one as a convenience, but I don't see me starting another collection of movies.

Downloads are fine for rentals

by minimalist - 1/26/08 9:59 PM In reply to: Why bother? by mrmarco1

But the highly compressed, 720p "HD" content you get from Apple, Comcast, Xbox, etc. isn't really comparable to a nice 1080p image that you get from a next gen disc.

I seriously considered getting an Apple TV instead of a Blu-ray player, but I'd rather continue using Netflix for their huge selection of titles.

NETFLIX damaged discs?

by LCromwell - 1/27/08 9:31 AM In reply to: Downloads are fine for rentals by minimalist

Anyone else have the problems I do with NETFLIX's DVDS looking like the previous renter played frisbee with them? I don't understand why they wouldn't at least look at them before sending them out? Some have huge smudges as well as sever scratches enough to make then unplayable. I would rather them take a day longer to mail them then send something that is unplayable!

(NT) Make your concern VERY strongly to Netflix.!!!

cruddy Netflix discs

by miller.90 - 1/27/08 11:45 AM In reply to: (NT) Make your concern VERY strongly to Netflix.!!! by NM_Bill

The vast majority of "unplayable" discs I get from Netflix can be made to play by rinsing the playing surface with lukewarm tap water and cleaning the surface in the usual way, by rubbing gently with a soft cloth in a radial manner.

Really? You think we should have to clean............

by LCromwell - 1/27/08 2:13 PM In reply to: cruddy Netflix discs by miller.90

You think we should have to clean up another renters crap all over the disc? Come on it is NETFLIX's responsibility,we are the customer not the rentee.

I'm making no judgment

by miller.90 - 1/27/08 4:04 PM In reply to: Really? You think we should have to clean............ by LCromwell

If you don't want to clean the disk and get on with it, don't. I'm not saying whether you should clean them or not. If you'd like to complain, contact Netflix. It's your dime. I was just commenting on how EASY it is to make most of the unplayable Netflix disks work.

Clean disks

by LCromwell - 1/28/08 4:57 AM In reply to: I'm making no judgment by miller.90

Actually I have cleaned them and used alcohol, always rubbing out words, not around the DVD. Most became playable. I just think for a company who is strugging in the marketplace, and they are, they would want to keep their customers happy.

Maybe 1 out of every 40 titles has problems

by minimalist - 1/27/08 1:56 PM In reply to: NETFLIX damaged discs? by LCromwell

But when they have problems they REALLY problems. I have had several discs arrive almost completely cracked in half. The replacement disc they sent for one of the cracked ones of them had a gigantic scratch on it as well meaning it took three tried just to be able to watch the disc.

I complained and they gave me some free rentals but really, how hard would it be for a person to actually check the discs BEFORE they send them? Not catching it the first time might be understandable but a two times in a row is just embarrassing. The fact that I got sent a damaged disc to replace a damaged disc proves that no human ever looks at these discs. They just keep shuffling them out till they get a complaint.

Still a lot of post about problems with Sony 300 series

by miller.90 - 1/28/08 7:30 AM In reply to: Sony BDP300 by LCromwell

Lots of folks say that the 300 series lock up (and require power cycling to get them going) when skipping chapters or clicking rapidly through menus. Is there any report that this problem can be eliminated by firmware updates? Has Sony acknowledged the problem, let alone done anything about it?
