Here are a few relatively easy suggestions Rebecca.
Replace the low efficiency power supply in your computer with a high efficiency one. This power supply for example http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371005
is 80% efficient (most average supplies are less than 50%, meaning half the energy used by your computer is wasted). Also this unit has Power Factor Correction, further reducing electrical demand.
Do you have an LCD? The old style large bulky CRT monitors consumed more energy.
Do you have wall-worts? You know, those large heavy power plugs for things like speakers. If you do, those use power 24/7, even when the device is "off".
Personally, I make a conscious effort every time I buy a piece of electronics equipment to reduce my energy usage. I unplug unused wall-worts, I replaced all my monitors with LCDs, I use compact fluorescent light bulbs, and I reduce my electrical usage during peak hours. Also I prefer to dress warmly rather than turn the heat up high when I'm home alone. Those are just personal choices, though. Heck, I even avoid excessively packaged goods because I don't like to generate excess trash. That's just my advice.

yes, consumer electronics use more energy these days. But, they are 10's, even hundreds of times more energy efficient than products before them. So, they actually use less energy, or use more of what they take from the socket.
We must be thinking of others, we're not the only ones that are going to need the planet in the future, it's everyone that comes after us. Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you, and think of what would be good for the future of mankind, let's all do our part, be it producer of or user of the power to be. And remember just because you don't agree doesn't mean that we must retaliate, be it in words or actions, PLEASE CAN WE ALL GET TOGETHER AS HUMAN BEINGS AND SERVE ONE AND OTHER IN THE GREATER CAUSE!
Want and waste is what we teach our children and is what our governments allow us to do, the rest is subversion and would be dangerous for the big earners and the bigger owners, they will never have enough ....

Dear Rebecca,
You are right, we must reduce our impact on the envireonment, global warming is a fact inspite of some who do not beleive it will happen.
Instaed of looking to the manufacturers to reduce electricity consumption of electronic equipment, we can reduce to the impact to a considerable extent. Just switch off when not in use. DO NOT KEEP ON STANDBY. Equipment on standby uses electricity. A survey by the British power estimated that the nation's electricity bill will be reduced by One BILLION pounds(Two Billion Dollars)per year if people did not leave the equipment on standby 24/7. If you really want to reduce your personal carbon foot print, use energy efficient lamps, switch off the light when you leave the room, switch off the water heater when not in use and a host of other such small acts. Cummulative effect can be substantial and we can probably leave a little better word for generations to come, inspite of the naysayers.

I think there is actually a desire to peak up a bit on the demand to make more of an issue out of needing technologies to solve the problem up there somewhere in the non exsistant civil hiaraki and very exsistant military top.
Indeed low watt chips although marketed by the chip manufacturers have not been fully adopted in terms of using them to market low watt Computers to the eco critical or even dads not wanting their children to annoy the energy bill to much (i'm sure the bill its beginning to take quite a life of it's own and the problem for dad is going to get worse).
One big area of research is fuel cells and especially with power stations molten carbon powerstations. These stations can possibly rival adverage nuclear power stations and can be developed more ecologically sound.
I don't think there is a desire to fully have a power crises but to keep the market on edge enough that it keeps the research fund coffers comming in.
So point being in the not to distant future we will probably have to much power but i'm sure many will have industrial ideas for this.
Unfortunitley the problems lyes in the fact your not in a civilisationa and if it always perfect we all would want to shake off all opressing notions and make our way to the stars.
That sort of culture however isn't very good at fighting other peoples wars.
This makes the whole thing overley complicated and fragile when we should be upping the confidence that we can become more powerful and sustainable.
A whole lot of hot air if you ask me.
The use of eletronics is only a part of the big picture. Every one should do thier little part to help stop global warming! yea, the living beings can move to areas that better suite them but, the trees and plants that clean the air, which is required for all life forms on earth, cannot move to a better climite. Thus with out some thing cleaning our air of CO2 then there is no point of consumer eletronics because there will be no life to enjoy our wounderful gadgets. So yea every one should do thier part or our childrens children will perish!
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Email me if you would like to talk about eternal destinies. Life is short, eternity is long.

Why the Hell are we content to let everyone else in the world drill for the oil that God provided in their land( and rip us off by the way ) yet we are not allowed to drill for oil in our own land?? Why is the oil and the coal and the forest there? To be used by the people of the earth.AS Long as we don't abuse it.!
Modern technology has provided safeguards, etc. to protect the environment, so we should have no qualms about providing for our own populace.
I was an idealistic " hippie " when I was young, but then I became an adult and faced reality. The world is not a living thing and either is so-called Mother Nature. It is here for all to enjoy its bounty, but as with all things,--in moderation.
Enjoy your PC and all your toys, because they are the result of man's ingenuity and intelligence,-- and man is surely smart enough to balance what is good for himself and the world. Thanks
In colder climates, all those electronics and lightbulbs help to heat your house or apartment. They are little heaters and are quite useful, adding heat in a distributed area, unlike a furnance or space heater.
If you turn them off, or unplug them, or buy low wattage devices, it accomplishes absolutely NOTHING in the winter in cold climes. In fact, it makes the situation worse. Your furnace kicks in more often to heat up the house, and it probably uses natural gas or oil - both of finite supply. Is that what you want?? Do you want to deplete the supply of gas and oil?? The electricity you use may come from a nuclear plant, wind power, solar power, hydro power, coal, as well as other sources.
So keep those little heaters running in the winter if it's cold outside. Reduce the use of natural gas and oil.
And don't forget to insulate your house!!
Manmade global warming is a HOAX , to steal your Freedoms, and your Money. If you Really care about energy supplies , write your Representatives in Congress ,especially the DEMONCRATS , and tell them to allow US to go after our own OIL. We need nuclear power plants, and we need them yesterday.
Worrying about energy consumption in home electronics is a waste of your time , and pointless.
That, my Dear, is the plain and simple Truth. Too bad more folks don't have the courage necessary to tell it.
Do you exist in the pocket of the oil companies? How much are they paying you to spout such driveling nonsence?
Let me just enlighten you my peabrained friend. A hoax, by definition, can not be based in hard irrefutable scientific fact, in the physical reality of the carbon-oxygen double bond, in its characteristic absorptive properties, nor in the macroscopic effects of its incresed concentration in the atmosphere. In general hoaxes have been observed to have more the character of what you have written here: ignorant statements, unsupported by unbiased evidence, cloaked in emotive language.
It appears that the "Truth" as you put it, is far too "plain and simple" for your insignificant intellect to comprehend. It does not take courage to drivel a bunch of lies and run around demanding that others accept them as truth, just a great deal of stupidity.
Why do you insist on opening your big mouth? All you have achieved is to embarass yourself.
