Under display settings, choose HDMI which you are using. Instead of using "automatic" for the display settings, choose "custom". ONLY check 1080p. If you check 720p and 1080p, then the PS3 will play your game in 720p. It defaults to the lower resolution for some reason. You will have to go back and check the 720p box if you play a different game that does not support 1080p though.

Can't play 1080p games in 1080p resolution

I can't change it. Then I tried to select only the 1080p option and move on to the right but the screen goes blank and comes back to the "Select All Resolutions tha are supported by your TV" screen. Same happens if i select 1080p and hit the square button to test the resolution. If I select the 720p and 1080i resolutions everything works just fine. Another note: when I play some blu-ray movie, the screen resolution automatically goes to 1080/24p, which is a resolution Sony Bravia TVs provide for watching movies. My TV set is a Sony Bravia 46 FullHD (KLV46W300A). My PS3 software was updated to version 2.30.

I can check 1080P but when I move to the next screen everything goes dark. My PS3 is connected to a Sony KDL46XBR6. I use HDMI cables. 1080P res was working fine 1 week ago, I turned it on the screen was black and I had to reset the res. Now its seemingly stuck at 480! Argh!
