Won a 30GB IPOD at a trade show from Sun Microsystems (the free martinis were good too). Would have bought something else otherwise. However, the price was right. Otherwise might have gotten a Creative Zen.
My wife bought a 20 gig 4th generation iPod for me as a gift. The wheel control is easy to use without looking at it. The original Apple earbuds are painful to use (found that out quickly) and have been replaced by on the ear headphones. My iPod is my primary music source for my stereo and for my iHome alarm clock.
FM transmitters exist that let me listen to my music through my truck's radio/CD player. This is especially useful in the western US where radio stations are far apart. Besides roadtrips, I use my iPod sometimes at work to block out the conversations of people in other departments. Cubicles are a pain...
I'll probably keep using the iPod until it wears out, then get another that has a wheel control. If I get a video iPod or other audio/video player in the future, I don't plan to download any videos from Apple or anyone else. You can't watch a video while walking down the street or doing work. I don't see the need to combine the function of a cell phone and a music player, so I'm underwhelmed by the iPhone and the iPod with the touch screen buttons that I wouldn't be able to use without looking at the front of the player.
My music comes from CDs I own, but I have some LPs I plan to copy to the iPod also. (I have a few songs from Apple that were free downloads)
My first iPod was the 2nd gen Mini. I finally gave up and bought it after twice returning a faulty Creative Zen Micro (the only time I ever got any use from an extended warranty).
Prior to the iPod Mini and Zen Micro were two Rio Carbons (faulty hard drives), one Rio Karma (broken scroll wheel), and my first MP3 player - a Rio Chiba.
Surprisingly, the iPod Mini still works great.
I received a 1st Gen iPod as a gift. It worked well for about 2 years until the battery failed to hold a charge. I got a fresh high capacity battery online for a company called Other World Computing. About 6 months later, the firewire port on the top side of the iPod died. It never worked again.
for MANY reasons. One was the loss of cds through theft. I had to start making copies to keep in my car and that became tedious and still I had to hide those somewhere in the car.
Another was I moved across the states, and flying two or more times a year, my ghetto discman just wasn't doing it, not to mention having to carry enough cds to get me through.
Its also great for when I go walking, I tend to exercise more with the music to keep me going.
Overall, it's great to have music at my disposal at any time. For the music obsessed like myself, it's pure bliss and worth every penny I paid for it.
so why was it credit to myshannon1? myshannon1, feel free to delete it, or an admin and could someone help me with what to do about this..

I personally think that apple sucks, and so do all of their products. I am a very happy zune owner, currenty on my second one. I bought the first one when it came out then bought the second one when it came out. Had apsolutely no problems with it.
I never used a walkman...why should I need an ipod? I see no practical reason to walk around with earbuds interfering with my hearing just to listen to music. There is a radio on in every store I walk into... I listen to the radio in my car...contemporary music sucks. I don't need an ipod.
Got my first Ipod Dec. 07 as a Chritmas gift from my wife to assist in my running program. Training for Miami 1/2 marathon. FINISHED UNDER GOAL TIME TODAY! Received 2nd Ipod video (under warranty) and 3rd generation Ipod nano at Christmas this year. WARNING!!! Do not run with IPOD Classics or previous Ipod "Hard-drive" Ipod models. The jostling will cause the hard-drive to eventually crash. Runners should buy the Ipods with flash drives such as the Nano and Touch.
I was in the market for a new music player, but was also strongly interested in a portable video player. The 5th Generation iPod came out around then and seemed like a nice choice. Been fairly happy with it.
I have been a music lover for most of my life (or ever since I discovered high fidelity) and prefer to listen to music live or in the comfort of my home on the finest hi fi I can afford, not blasting in my ear with tiny little speakers, not in a compressed format, and not at the expense of the people around me in public. I think the whole concept of these individual players (from the Walkman until now) is an insult to ears, music, and others. Call me a snob; I don't care!

I received a 2nd generation 4g through work. I probably wouldn't have spent the money on myself so it was a great prize to receive. I use it when I work out and when I clean house.
i am currently on my 2nd ipod and 9th mp3 player in the last 3 years. Ive used sansas, creative ipod (obviously) and the no name generic mp3 players. they all have there pros and cons, personaly ive chosen apple (i currently have a new 4gb video nano) because of the small size, but very durable design. i found that the similary priced creative models, tho they had more memory they felt somewhat like cheaper plastic, compared to ipods. And that sansas, again tho less expensive, tended to crash............ alot. Also the fact that should u buy music from itunes u can burn unlimted times, unlike some windows media online stores, but id rather use cds or limewire for music
Many years ago I bought 2 (now defunct 256 MB MP3 players from BANTAM. My wife and I used them primarily for working out. I was (still am the run and buy guy for all electronics)by far the primary user who ripped all the CD's and got all the songs on MP3 format. (The BANTAMS worked on MS Millenium but no further and sold the company who got out of the MP3 business)
At my asking my wife bought me a 2 Gig Nano - 2nd Gen - still in use today Battery life significantly down from 2-3 years ago, but that is expected.
2 Kids had Shuffles 1st Gen - wanted screens so my older daughter bought a 80 gig White 3G, and for Christmas this past 2007-got my wife and Younger daughter each 3G nano's 4 GB.
Current = total of 4 Active IPODS - 2 Shuffles discarded.
I expect to upgrade my older nano to a new version in a year or so , when the battery goes south.
My wife bought me a boombox ILive radio, (not bad, inexpensive plays on CD, has radio and ipod charger/player dock in it)which is also everyones charger, It is much better than getting the cable and plugging into our laptops.
I could probably cite several of these "reasons"
I currently do not own an iPod. I've owned a Creative Zen 40GB and a Sansa e280. Both broke. I'm now looking for something realiable, with a solid aftermarket of accessories and support. I'd also like to stick with flash based players because of the lack of moving parts. I'm curious about the iPod, but I am concerned about Apple's very unapologetic, fiercely proprietary posturing, as experienced through my (BRIEF) dealings with iTunes.
Also, I thing Apple has gone way overboard with the whole "smaller is better" thing. I think that's an admirable design goal, but only to a point. I mean the new Nano is to the point where it feel like if you're not careful, it will blow away with a strong breeze! The iPod Shuffle is just plain silly with its Zoolander-ish dimensions. But Sandisk is just as guilty with the microSD cards. I guess picoSD is next.
Anyway, other than the size, the iPod nano looks good. And I really like the Touch as well. Very unique. Reminds me of my PSP.
I may give the iPod more consideration, but I just don't want Apple being able to determine how I experience my music with a lot of DRM junk getting in the way. That's probably my main barrier to buying an iPod. If there were no worries there, I probably would.

-- Other (Please explain.)
-- Never owned one, never will. (Please explain.)
