Q: mp3 software & equipment with software to convert?

by gargoyle - 1/24/08 12:06 PM

Sent: 08 January 2008 20:17 to
jais AT cnet DOT com' no reply received!

Hello

Yours seems to be the most senior figure to approach…sorry if you feel I should have tried some else!

I bought a iRiverclix in September 2007, following a review by your editor of the time but whose name I do now see, the name Janine strikes a chord.

My problem since then has been to transcribe a largish number of jazz/swing tapes into mp3.

I am more than a little surprised that CNET have not sought…or been able…to add to their reviews on equipment that will perform the subject of this email. I have a tape player, of course, but it is bit ancient, like me. At 74, I know I am a little slow to understand the machinations (seem like them anyway) of mp3 and I desperately need help.

With ‘google’ I seem able to attract software possibilities but no software INCLUDING tape players.

Is there any chance, please, that you could require such a review on equipment that comprises tape player WITH inclusive software?

Can YOU help please.

Thank you.

Regards
Gargoyle

A: converting cassettes

by Kurt Wolff - 1/24/08 12:02 PM

I am by no means an expert on this, but you should be able to covert songs from cassette to MP3 without a problem (the same as you might covert LPs to MP3). What sort of computer do you have? (Mac or PC?)

Personally I have a stereo-component CD recorder, that records albums, 78s, tapes, etc. to CD, which I then turn and input into my computer.

Time is almost up, but try Googling this phrase:
converting cassette to mp3

And see if those tutorials are helpful? And again, you can try asking this same quesiton in our digital music forums, someone should hav a good answer!

Good luck!

Q: DBX File

by thepres - 1/24/08 11:52 AM

I downloaded some e-mail and photos to an external hard drive. It was saved in a DBX format. Now, I am unable to open this up. Can I change the format so that I can open it up? Or, is there anything I can download to be able to open it up in this format? Thanks.

Q: listen with linux

by dwpbike - 1/24/08 11:45 AM

any chance i can listen to streams on music update? i use linux fc6; never going back to micro$oft.

A: streams

by Kurt Wolff - 1/24/08 11:51 AM

You mean listen to streams on our site? It should work without a problem, give it a shot, and let me know if you have any trouble.

Here's one to try, just click the link where it says "listen for free":

Q: music

by a_ven - 1/24/08 11:40 AM

Cool -- I love those bands too. Do you have tons of playlists, or do you just listen to things randomly? Any tips for organizing your ipod? Mine is out of control.

(And band cd I would pass along is that compilation by Air that came out a year or so ago -- Night Music, I think it's called. I listen to it a lot.)

A: playlists

by Kurt Wolff - 1/24/08 11:49 AM

We have lots of playlists on the site, including lists that focus on different genres. These are a great way to hear a bunch of new (and recommended) songs in a category you like.

Here's one way to do it: using Air as an example, go to their genre page ("downtempo"):
http://music.download.com/2001-8360_32-0.html?tag=MDL_bc

Look for the "most popular" box on bottom right, and click 'stream all songs.' Instant playlist!

As for managing music collections on iPods or otherwise, take a look at this recent article, see if that helps:

Good luck!

Q: record player

by azelunka - 1/24/08 11:34 AM

sorry, i guess i wasn't very clear. Not the type of music, rather the equipment.
Whats the best and cheapest way to building a record player stereo system?

A: record player

by Kurt Wolff - 1/24/08 11:43 AM

Sorry about that. If all you want to do is spin some records at home, truthfully, the cheapest way to build a basic but workable system would be to buy your equipment used. Avoid all-in-one units (usually cheaply made); instead opt for a basic turntable (33 and 45 speeds), receiver, and speakers. Thrift stores believe it or not are not a bad place to look! Also eBay. Dual has long been a reliable turntable brand. Note I wouldn't get anything that needs any repairs, as parts can be impossible to find.

Of course if you want *new* equipment for mixing, etc., consider laying down the cash on a Technics 1200. For reviews on new decks, you can always check the CNET audio pages:

Does that help?

A: New favorite music?

by Kurt Wolff - 1/24/08 11:35 AM

"What's on your iPod" (or Zune, or Zen) is always a great question, so I'll ask it back--anyone have some new favorite bands or songs they'd like to pass along?

Q: music

by a_ven - 1/24/08 11:29 AM

What's on your ipod?

A: ipod

by Kurt Wolff - 1/24/08 11:33 AM

My iPod? When the battery isn't dead (it's an old 3rd generation barely hanging on) I've got Richard Hawley (favorite of mine last year), Townes Van Zandt, George Jones, Led Zep, Good Bad and the Queen--just a few recent listens.

Q: Record Player

by azelunka - 1/24/08 11:18 AM

I don't know if this pertains to the topic, but i really want to get a record player and start buying records... i just have no idea where to begin.

A: Records!

by Kurt Wolff - 1/24/08 11:30 AM

What sort of music do you like? If you have some key starting points (key artists), you could search our site for them, and for similar artists, download or stream some songs, see what you like--a great way to hear songs before you buy.

Q: Finding music?

by s_knapp - 1/24/08 11:18 AM

Thanks for teh answer. I'll check it out. But are there bands you like that are like those too?

A: bands like radiohead and death cab

by Kurt Wolff - 1/24/08 11:28 AM

Hi again S,

Have you heard Gorillaz or The Good, the Bad, the Queen? If not, we have songs from both bands on the site. As for Death Cab, you should check out the new solo offering from bandmember Chris Walla, free download is here:
http://music.download.com/chriswalla/3600-8691_32-101102997.html

Hope you like it!

Q: replay music

by tjm37816 - 1/24/08 11:16 AM

in your opinion are programs like replay music that record output rather than just downloading a file legal.

A: legalities

by Kurt Wolff - 1/24/08 11:25 AM

I'm not a lawyer, so I can't judge whether a practice is legal or not, or even steer you in one direction or another (I'd get into trouble pretty fast). All I can say is: use common sense, and if you really like an artist, support them as best you can. Sorry if that's vague!

Q: Need some rock!

by lucia_l - 1/24/08 11:15 AM

Who should I be listening to right now to rock out? Anyone new and loud out there?

A: loud

by Kurt Wolff - 1/24/08 11:22 AM

How about these bands: Panthers, Queens of the Stone Age, Comets on Fire? There's a new Comets side project too coming out soon called Howling Rain.

Q: YouTube

by meteorologisttwc - 1/24/08 11:12 AM

Is there a way to put youtube videos on an ipod?

A: youtubes and ipods

by Kurt Wolff - 1/24/08 11:17 AM

Funny you should ask that, as my colleague over at software, Jessica, just wrote a blog post on this subject. Check it out here:
http://www.download.com/8301-2007_4-9855596-12.html

Hope that helps!

Q: Similar Artists

by jacobshm - 1/24/08 11:10 AM

Do you know if you have any music similar to Red Hot Chili Peppers or Silvertide?

A: Similar artists

by Kurt Wolff - 1/24/08 11:15 AM

Hi,
As I mentioned below, a great way to find similar artists is to use the "you might also like" links on each artist page. Check it out on the Chili Peppers page here:
http://music.download.com/redhotchilipeppers/3600-8573_32-100054124.html
NOte that if you refresh the page, you'll get another set of suggestions of recommended artists in that same genre.

Another band you might check out for sure though is Fishbone:
http://music.download.com/fishbone/3600-8587_32-100022123.html

Let us know if you like it, and thanks for writing in.

Q: Finding music?

by s_knapp - 1/24/08 11:02 AM

I just started downloading music from your site and I love it. But can you tell me how to find more bands I love? I'm into Radiohead, Death Cab for Cute...all that indie stuff.

A: Finding songs

by Kurt Wolff - 1/24/08 11:09 AM

Hi S,
There are a few ways to find music on our site. One is to use the search box, typing in the name of the band you're after. ON that artist's page we have suggestions of other artists in that genre that you might also like.

You can also search by genre, using the green navigation index on the left of the page. Pick a genre and you'll get featured artists and playlists of songs in that genre.
Enjoy!

Q: Voice removal

by darkrocker21 - 1/24/08 11:02 AM

Is there any program (preferably free) that can remove the voice from an mp3?

A: audacity

by Kurt Wolff - 1/24/08 11:06 AM

The best free audio editing program I know is Audacity--you may not be able to remove the voice entirely, but you can give it a try. Search for it on our sister site Download.com (software):
http://www.download.com

Another that a software editor recommends is Goldwave, which has a free version as well. Good luck!

A: Ready for questions!

by Kurt Wolff - 1/24/08 10:52 AM

Hey everyone,

I'm here to try and answer any questions you might have about our site Download.com Music, including how to use it, where to find free downloads, etc. Or just to chat about your favorite music. I'll try and answer as many questions as I can, but I can't promise I'll get to everyone.

So, how can I help you?

-Kurt
