Four reasons:
1. Sound quality. I've heard the iPods, especially the newer ones. My Sony Diskman slays it (as one would hope, being a portable CD player with a triple bass boost). I'm hoping the Sony Walkman MP3 player I'm looking at has good enough sound quality to satisfy my picky ears. So you know, I tested a new generation iPod Nano with one of my 320 kps MP3s. I wasn't impressed even after fiddling with the audio controls and using different headphones.
2. No WMA support. 70% of my library is in high-end variable bit-rate WMAs because I find it to be a superior format. I can retain high sound quality while using a lot less space on my hard drive. Its also one reason I rarely buy music online.
3. iTunes. Buggy. Messy. Crash-happy (especially in Vista, and my Vista installation is pretty darn stable otherwise). I'll take Windows Media Player 11 or the software that came with my X-Fi sound card over iTunes anyday for playing my music (and I use good ol' Winddows Explorer to organise my tunes for me, and itys just as eaasy to double-click a file i nExplorer as it is in my player. I can easily make my own playlists for extended playing when I'm busy.
4. I've just never like Apple. Or Steve Jobs. I won't be throwing my money that firection without a much more compelling reason than the iPod.
Like most of anything that is mainstream, it lacks solid quality and is overhyped, while the true quality MP3 players go under the radar (No, I ain't talking about the Zune...I wasn't terribly impressed there either).
Just another selfish isolating device, the Apple iPod is indeed as all Apple products very slick and ultra-cool.
I bought one for my daughter and over 5 months it took five of them to get one that finally worked and kept working. The drones on the phone had their little checklists and made no attempt to offer anything but another cr*ppy replacement - one of which froze just after being fully loaded and used less than 10 minutes. I thought an upgrade was in order, no dice.
Personally I don't care for the all music all the time modern America wherin one cannot even walk outside at the "modern-retro open shopping malls" without someone's "Soundtrack of your life" defining your time with speakers disguised as rocks playing at 70dB every 35 feet. I just have much more respect for music than that; it to me is something to be listened to, not an accompaniment. If it doesn't bear your full attention it's not worth listening to. Couple that with the trade off of MP3 tracks moderate music quality for convenience and I can't see myself with an iPod. Heck I haven't even loaded music into the MP3 player on my Nokia E61i, why do I need a separate device?
I don't know, maybe the iPod is supposed to drown that out outside soundtrack and replace it with yours ....
I don't listen to that much music to begin with. I have only a few favorite artists. I have no need for storage for thousands of songs, a simple cell, with a camera, text, internet features is all I need. And I couldn't stand having to carry a charger around with me. I want a phone with the longest standby time possible, lol. I don't use it that much and would never bother with music on one. :^)
No need... Hate Apple... don't listen to music... Enough said...
I like Creative! I have one of the the first Creative Zen Micro! Though it's only 5 GB and a mini-Hard disk. Still works great. Battery still lasts, and unlike Apple, is replaceable! It came with two batteries as a special launch promotion, still using first one, years later. I purchased Zen V for my wife, then the Zen V+ for my daughters. If I ever need more then my old reliable Zen Micro - I am looking at the new ZEN, available up to 32 GB Flash drive. Creative is the best.
I like tech. but I also like to hang on to my money. To cheap to buy one but my wife keeps eyeballing them. Thinks she need one to listen to tunes at work. I think she should buy a radio. She will win this decision. She always does. ![]()
I got my Ipod to shut out rudely loud people on the train so I can have a better quality ride to and from work You know the ones who talk on cell phones loudly, or talk to their friends loudly, like they want everyone to hear their conversations to make themselves feel important. It also drownds out the snorers too.
A friend got a different brand; the Ipod is much easier to use.
Sound quality is #1. Being able to record is #2. Being able to change batteries is #3. Being able to delete on the fly is #4. Unfortunately the iPod doesn't fit the bill. A Sony Minidisc fills all those requirements and more. Yes, it's a technology nobody uses. Yes, it's not trendy. Yes, it's a Sony. However, they're well made and work very, very well, not to mention they sound awesome, especially with ATRAC. It doesn't have drag and drop, but that doesn't bother me. It does what I want.
It simply ties you with the iTunes, which to my experience is the worst media player you can have on a PC. I own a Sansa, which is expandable, and way cheaper than iPods.
I wanted an Ipod until I experienced Itunes. It's buggy as hell, and you pay $.99 a song. I bought a Sansa Rhapsody 4G. The Rhapsody software is much better and more user friendly. I pay $14.99 a month to put all the music I want on it.
I got it as a gift from my boss, and yes i use it pretty much everyday.
Apple makes great stuff, but I like to be able to manage my computers and mp3 players the way I want to, not the way Jobs sets them up. It is that simple. P.S I could care less about cell phones so that doesn't even enter into the Apple equation.
for you 48% that said never owned one never will, IF you own a mp3 player sooner or later you will own an iPod .
The way Ive always looked at it is that they all do exactly the same thing. Listen to music. So id rather stick to my mobile phone or mp3 player than spend loads on something thats not worth getting.
I have a small inexpensive MP3 player that more than meets my needs. Buying an iPod would just be a result of falling for the hype.
