Hey I am looking for an in-dash gps system with other options such as cds/mp3/ipod/usb connectivity. i was looking around online, first at the best, most expensive, and then at the cheapest i could find. eventually i came across one for about $400 that seemed too good to be true. it is the VR3 VRVD640G In-Dash DVD Receiver w/ 4" LCD & GPS. I found it on only a couple of sites, one of which was wal-mart. normally i wouldnt buy any electronics from walmart, but at this price...
the problem is i cant find any information about this product or this company- VR3. Is it worth the risk to get this, or does anyone have any information about this product?
i will also take any suggestions for alternatives. i will give up some quality for a cheaper price, because im 18 and not working right now. thanks in advance.
Here's their URL: http://www.vr-3.com or http://www.roadmasterusa.com
The All-In-One GPS you're inquiring about is available at www.pepboys.com and is available for $399 until Dec. 1, 2007
Hope this helps.
Here's the manual for the unit:

Thanks thats a big help. But I am still wondering if I should buy it. At such a low price and with such little information it seems risky. Any advice?
Hey, did you buy it yet, if so, how is it. I'm thinking of buying one myself..
Here is a review from Walmart, I've been thinking of purchasing myself.

It looks like the wrong link to the VRVD640G manual was used. The English manual is found here: http://roadmasterusa.com/manuals/VRVD640G_eng.pdf . Full specs here: http://roadmasterusa.com/index.php?page=car-stereos
My thought would be to hope someone gets one and finds a way to install Linux on it.
It has an ARM processor, so it should be Linux compatible. Between the USB port and the SD card slot, someone should be able to load Linux on it.
Great unit, I bought one at Wal-Mart in Delaware, while traveling with my motorhome from Quebec to Florida,,I've installed the unit and it took me several days to learn how to manipulate the GPS part of it. The instruction manual is quite impressive but well detailed...plays DVD like a charm (beside CD's as well) the tricky part is the insertion of the SD card, that you have to put in behind the control panel pefore mounting same..the USB key is more accessible, both work flawlessly..the screen day-night feature is wonderfull ,touch screen is easy to work with (but a little small) I have used my VRVD640G GPS (beside a co-pilot on a laptop) and it was very precise. I would recommend that unit to someone that is quite familiar with the installation of such apparatus.
I was wondering if there was any way (since this is windowsCE), to replace the mp3 player/interface on this unit (vrvd640g)? All in all, it's a great stereo, but I cannot stand the AWFUL, CLUMSY interface for the mp3 operation. It would be great if there was a way to replace the app that runs the mp3 interface so that it has larger text and allows you to select albums and songs by "touching" them instead of the clumsy "arrow" base interface. Does anyone know if this is possible??
I bought my grandson a VRVD640 for Christmas and had it instaled at a auto radio installer in Logan, WV He got everything working but the GPS want go anywhere or give you another screen from Menu. do you have any idea on this? thanks Judy Branham at rlkirk39@suddenlink.net Plays DVD and Cd and radio works great.nothing from the Navigation system
OK, this is my first post and I thought I'd share with everyone a file I have put together to run games, apps, and other stuff on my VRVD640G (which I LOVE) so I hope this is allowed...
Just take the following download and extract it to an SD card (minimum 64meg) put the SD card in the slot on the backside of your faceplate and on your main screen click settings and update.

PLEASE NOTE:
This is NOT an update.
It's COMPLETELY SAFE.
Everything just runs off the SD card.
NOTHING on your stereo is modified.
There are a few quirks though:
The main VR3 menu cannot be closed without the "four corner" trick, so my custom menu is set to always be on top. So what this means is that after the custom menu loads up, select your game/app with a single click then close the custom menu (button in bottom right corner) the custom menu will then slide down revealing your game/app! And finally closing your game/app will take you back to the VR3 main menu. Got that?
Also some of the games are not made for landscape mode but will still play although they maybe small/cutoff
And one last note: since the stereo runs Windows CE anything you may change/regedit/etc. will reset back when you turn the stereo off, like wise anything saved like on the desktop for example will disappear. So really and truely you can't hurt anything! ![]()
Anywho ENJOY!

Any chance of getting a TTS GPS system on this? I see it uses essentially a skinned version of Mio Maps... if this had TTS I would be all over it.
BTW with the above mentioned hack, can you run your own GPS software off the SD card? It would seem you should be able to but I am not seeing any easily editable menu stuff in the download to point to your own apps.
I download and put the files on an sd card. I went into setup and hit update but got an error message. Is there something I am missing?
Thanks
Hi Dukie
You must have made the same mistake i've done when trying to looad updates to the unit. The SD card must be inserted on the slot on TOP of the front (removable) panel..there is a small plastic plug that hide the SD slot...don't insert the SD card BEHIND the front panel. Good luck
