Seat-to-seat chat is a great idea

by gamookie - 1/16/08 10:05 AM In reply to: Real Deal 92 is up - Road Test by acedtect CNET staff

Seat-to-seat chat is a great way to let the person in front of you know that that lump in their back is your knees. It amazes me how ineffective screaming in pain is on flights. Perhaps, a barrage of instant messages will make someone change their ways.

Also, you can use seat-to-seat chat to give little affirmations to the poor soul who happens to be next to the crying baby chair.

Dual Monitor Arrangement Trouble

by dtdavis - 1/17/08 7:51 AM In reply to: Real Deal 92 is up - Road Test by acedtect CNET staff

I just set up another monitor for my laptop, an HP Compaq nc8430 running Windows XP Pro. I'm using an HP docking station. The laptop monitor is primary and I have an LCD panel sitting to the left. The default in the display settings is for the second monitor to be on the right, so I drag it to the left and the arrangement is set. That is, until I lock my workstation (company policy when leaving my desk). When I log back in the arrangement is reverted back with the monitor on the right, which drives me crazy. Rebooting keeps my display arrangement settings, but locking the workstation (<ctrl>-<alt>-<del><Lock computer>) clears it back to the default. I haven't yet found any information on-line to resolve this situation. Any ideas?

Multiple monitor Addict

by joshuaboyd - 1/18/08 8:09 AM In reply to: Real Deal 92 is up - Road Test by acedtect CNET staff

Hey guys, love the new format. I use a triple monitor setup on my work desktop and can't do without it. Did you see the 7" monitor add-on that Samsung had at CES? It was one of my personal favorites at CES this year.
Roadtest idea: have a list of upcoming products and let the listeners see it, then if anyone uses those products, we could help contribute to the show too.
Thanks guys.

I like themed topics

by scifirantergirl - 1/20/08 9:56 AM In reply to: Real Deal 92 is up - Road Test by acedtect CNET staff

I think your themed topics is what set you apart from a lot of podcasts. The new format feels like Buzz Out Loud with Rafe and no Molly. If you are running out of topics, ask us! There are tons of things that I'd like to hear you guys discuss. You can even revisit old topics with updated information.

I like themed topics too

... but I also liked the Road Test. I'm pretty easy to please. But I agree about revisiting old topics -- nothing wrong with that. How about Son of Podcasting?!?

Real Deal Out Loud

by Ken from Chicago - 1/21/08 3:27 AM In reply to: Real Deal 92 is up - Road Test by acedtect CNET staff

I liked the podcast of indeterminate theme. Why should MTJ have all the fun?

Tho I agree with others, having a single theme makes the show stand out from Buzz Out Loud, Buzz Report, This Week in Tech, Cranky Geeks, Digital Life TV, etc.

So if you're covering several topics, try and find a common theme (other than tech, cuz, well, duh, this is Cnet, yeah, it's gonna be tech-related).

CES

Trade Shows

Dying trade shows

Defunct trade shows

Trade shows to pricey for their britches and having to return to Chicago.

Etc.

P.S. Love the show. More Cnet podcasts is not enough.

Like the Road Test

by hemmeter - 1/21/08 12:18 PM In reply to: Real Deal 92 is up - Road Test by acedtect CNET staff

I like the concept of the Road Test. I was actually going to email BOL about this kind of thing for them to communicate.

We get a lot of "there's this new tool that..." type of stuff via blogs (e.g. Webware), but I think it's really nice to have you break through a lot of that and tell us what's actually making a difference in your life.

Some of my unique tools that are making a real difference in my life are:

- Google Apps For Email: Only the email management piece is making a real difference to me. Calendar & Docs are not. I still prefer MS Office for those.

- Roboform

- Jungle Disk for backup. It's a secure/encrypted backup to Amazon S3.

- Trillian as a unified IM client. I hear Adium is great on the Mac side and the Pidgin is good too.

- Snag-It (www.techsmith.com) for screen capture and light image editing.

- Jing Project (www.jingproject.com) to capture <5 minute screencasts and share them for things like demos or for customer support purposes.

- Salesforce.com (www.salesforce.com) - keeps me organized in chasing down leads, tracking sales and supporting my clients.

Road Test Episode

by DBraumeister - 1/25/08 4:30 AM In reply to: Real Deal 92 is up - Road Test by acedtect CNET staff

Occasional multi topic episode heavy on the listener input would be great. I got two products for Christmas that I LOVE. Technology is great when it works and it should be shared. It also should be shared when it's not so great.
