Hard disk MP3 players sans pesky upload software

by reza1977 - 1/18/08 9:10 AM

I'm looking for a hard disk MP3 player (20+ GBs) that doesn't require some type of intermediary software to upload the songs from your computer to the player. Anyone of any good ones in the market?

I mean I just want to copy and paste songs onto the device via windows explorer. Programs like iTunes are such an inconvenience.

there's the 32GB creative ZEN
also there's the 16GB ZEN and the Sansa View 16GB so you can buy a flash card to upgrade it to 20GB
on the harddisk side there's the Archos 404 30GB and PVPs from Archos Creative and Cowon

Really?

Are you sure about the Zen? The only zen player i checked out was the vision w, and i know for a fact that that model does require some kind of software to upload songs. Although, you can use it as a data storage device where you can copy and paste files via windows explorer but songs uploaded this way cannot be played by the player.

Zen Vision W does NOT need . . .

I have the W and it does not need any additional software to load music, video, or photo files, unless you are not loading a supported format and need conversion. However, the software Creative includes is pretty handy and does not drag on the computer. I use it especially for loading files because, if set, it auto resizes for the device, thereby saving space if you want. I use windows media player for loading music files (I use WMA format to save space).

My Bad

I had previously talked to a reseller and he had told me that the W required upload sotware. But when I contacted Creative they told me pretty much what you said. They said it was possible to copy and paste songs on to the W but that it was not recommended as I might have problems with licensed files containing ID 3 tags.

I was actually thinking about getting the W. I've been looking for a decent Media Player that can play both MP3s and AVI video, although playing music is a bigger priority. The only thing that held me back from the W was the upload software issue and the fact that it did not support DivX 6.

How do you find the sound quality of the W compared to the iPods? I bought a 60GB iPod Photo back in 2005. It was just before the iPod videos came out so i'm guessing it's 3rd gen? In the following year i bought a sony-ericsson w810i walkman phone and it b*tch slaps my iPod when it comes to sound quality. Unfortunately, it only has a max capacity of 4GB. I don't know if the more recent iPods have better sound quality or just better features. can anyone confirm?

But I would seriously like to know how you rate the W's sound quality. What are the MP3 players out there (20+ GBs) that have the best sound quality?

most MTP devices still let you do drag and drop, but not to the extent of MSC capable devices

Sound Quality

Quite simply, you cannot go wrong for sound quality on a Creative product, as long as you have good source material. Creative "invented" digital sound reproduction. Though they may not produce the most popular or most stylish media players, there are few out there that can compete in the quality of sound space.

However, if you buy your product in the EU, they do require limits on volume levels, which will have some effect.

Pardon my ignorance but what exactly is MSC mode? And can you recommend some good players that have this mode.

Mass Storage Class

by JonTitor - 1/18/08 11:58 AM In reply to: huh? by reza1977

it allows the device to act exactly as an external harddisk or flashdrive
there may be others but for sure I can tell you SanDisk and Archos let you switch to that mode
there are some other players that only do it when you are running Linux or Mac (Samsung I think)
