How FAST do new cell phones come onto the market?
by Call_Me - 1/15/08 6:40 AMI've been with AT & T cell phones since 1996...a long, long time. My 2 year contract comes up this October but I've been receiving texts and emails from them stating: "Renew NOW! and receive a NEW!!! phone!"
Being that I'll be staying with AT & T 'cause I've never had a problem and their prices and Help desk has done me right, I went to their website and checked out all the new phones that I'd truly get for free if I renewed my contract early.
This is my question: my current phone is working beautifully and problem free. I know that technology travels faster than the speed of light so I'm wondering if I pick out a phone TODAY, will be seeing a cooler one in 6 months time?
I love the iPhone but won't buy it because I'd only use 1/2 of the applications, not needing 'stocks/YouTube/ebay, etc.' I'm really waiting for another type of touch screen phone that allows me to customize the icons for my personal needs.
So, do I wait until my contract is up, or do I bite the apple and get a free phone because I can? *The AT & T Tilt looks kinda cool.*

I don't need all the new gps, movie, etc type multimedia options. I'm just looking for a a phone that can do music and has a 5mp camera with xenon flash on it.
Personally, I'm looking a the N82 and K850i (being released unlocked in Feb in the US). Also, there's a few direct iPhone type devices coming from Samsung and LG that were just released in Asia last month. All of these as GSM unlocked (Cingular/Tmobile) so I'd say wait. I've been out of contract since last May and have yet to find anything more appealing than my current Razr.
I'm hoping most of these new phones hit the US by June. That's when I plan on getting a new phone.

I was thinking that if I found a cool phone NOW<, I'd chop 6 months off of my existing contract by renewing it today instead of October. But, it seems that the evening news is constantly littered with "At the Consumer Electronic show, >THIS< is the newest phone coming out...blahblahblah."
So, I, too, think that I'll play the waiting game and patiently see what new Gizmo's are available in October. That's close enough to the 2008 Christmas buying frenzy so anything *New* will be launched around that time.
Hope my great cell phone continues to hold out until then and I'm not stuck buying something to replace it before I want to do so.

A few months later I had a conflict with ATT and wanted to end my contract and return the phone, but they wouldn't let me. I had to pay $175 to cancell my line.
ps. wait till october, maybe the prada or a better phone will be out. if you arent in love with one now, just wait till you are.

Been with them since 1997 and have never had a problem with them. I'm still going to wait until October, though. The responses HERE have been great and have poured water on my flames of getting a new phone until more Whiz-Bangs are available.
