I love to troubleshoot tech problems and love the sense of satisfaction in making something work the way it should. But when companies actively misrepresent products, we need to make that known, too.
I've discovered that many other users have experienced the same problems I'm having with my HP Photosmart C6180--at this site, at Newegg.com, and even at HP's own product website. However, HP lists the 106 customer reviews from highest to lowest; if you sort them from lowest to highest (or select the most recent), you'll find lower ratings. Even some of the five star ratings admitted to spending hours with Tech Support addressing the two-way communications issue. And how HP gets AVERAGE 5-star ratings when you see the number of lower ratings is beyond me.
Anyway, I tried to post the following comment, verbatim, only to have it rejected by HP, claiming it "detected profanity". There is absolutely no profanity, of course. However, HP also requires comments to have an "appropriate attitude". (It also bars links to other websites.) Question--does this sound like an honest and truthful company to you? Here's my rejected post, in toto:
"The advertised features are wonderful, and are the reason I parted with my money. HP has been dishonest about real life conflicts, however. After many, many hours of troubleshooting with HP Tech Support and a replacement machine, this has been the worst technology investment of my life.
First, the positives: Everything works as advertised on our Windows XP desktop, attached by USB cable. It also functions well wirelessly with a MacBook. (I've noticed that several of your fawning 5-star ratings were limited to this type of installation.) With Windows XP notebooks, however (I've tried two Dells and one HP), one-way printing is the best one can hope for wirelessly. HP Tech Support has given up and HP "Customer Support" will only replace the machine again, refusing to refund my money.
Tech Support acknowledged to me that they have received many similar complaints. Cnet and Newegg user forum comments reflect the same issues--even these HP user comments at this site have similar problems buried in the 106 reviews. Prospective buyers should try resorting your reviews from low to high and most recent (unlike your high to low default) and see if this machine is really worth the headache. And I must question your math--there are MANY single star ratings, and yet you come out with only 5-star averages. How is that possible?
HP--I used to think you were the only name in town with printers. After this horrendous experience, I'm looking at Canon, Epson; ANYONE other than HP. The automobile and even the toy industries use recalls to correct such travesties, and that's what you should do with this piece of crap AiO. You should indeed be ashamed. I wonder if you'll have courage to post this review."
will be recalled Due to Violation of Lead Paint Standards.
I feel sorry for you. Trying to get the printer to work properly and the way it's suppose to.
You say it works great with Linux(proper drivers). Maybe you'll find the correct drivers for Windows some day. It still sounds like the wireless part of it, that's suppose to send the scan to the Windows laptop is NOT communicating. The only thing left would be firewall. Windows has one and some virus programs have one. Using more than one firewall causes conflicts. I have the firewall turned off in my wireless router, disabled Windows firewall and use Zone Alarm Free edition for my firewall.
Good luck with your mission and believe me when I say, "I feel your pain!"

chromosholmes, your "muppet" comment was very funny.
my husband and i were each able to print wirelessly via XP and Vista laptops to the C6180 for months, but no longer. i cannot stomach returning to all of the install/reinstall/blah blah i did to set it up in the first place--my stepdaughter (on a mac) gets the printer now, i guess.
for one client, i set up a canon and a brother AIO -- both worked fine wired and wirelessly -- in case you are still looking.
Going try and run through this from memory if possible. It's a bit of a work around and it's only been working for a week but it does work.
Un install (level 4 batch file)
Re install HP software
Remove the 2 HP prog shortcuts "Digital Imaging Monitor" and "Fast Start"? from StartUp menu to Progs menu, (so you have control over the start up)
Restart computer
1)Allow wireless connection to connect. In my case Ad Hoc
2)Double click "Digital Imaging Monitor" ,allow it to initialise.
3)Go to control panel open SCANNERS properties. Now of the OK, CANCEL,and APPLY buttons only OK, and CANCEL are an option, APPLY is grayed out. To activate the button, I click Disable then click it again to re enable. Then the APPLY button becomes available as an option.
I click APPLY, and close the properties box.
And away I go. Scans from the printer button or from the computer.
Steps 1,2 and 3 I have to perform each time I restart the computer.
Please let me know if there is a proper fix for the problem
I would have to agree with most on the challenges with the HP AIO line.
I have had a worked with a number of models of this printer line over the years and have experienced similar problems.
I would put most of the problems down to the horrendous aggregation of software that HP has cobbled together for XP/Vista and calls a driver.
Just something to try as a fallback of last resort for network scanning. Connect to the IP address of the printer using IE and download the Scan from within the browser. When the HP software was not working on the PC this always worked as a fallback of last resort.
In similar scenarios the approachs that has always worked for me to fix this problem was to use the HP All-in-One level 4 uninstall software (it is somwhere on their web site) - it takes 4 PC reboots to get rid of the current software. Then re-install the software from the web - this has worked in about 99% of cases.
I had it working then it did not.
I finally figured out that it happened when I disabled Netbios over TCP/IP
I am using the basic drivers and use Picassa2 to scan with and it works great.
Network>>Properties>>TCP/IP>Properties>advanced>WINS>Netbios over TCP/IP =default
Bought the C6180 brand new. Had never had any luck scanning wirelssly with a Windows machine. My son had a macbook and wanted to install the new printer. He downloaded the (mac) driver. After install, he was prompted to do a test scan. Just as I was about to tell him that he couldn't scan wirelessly - he would have to "hook up" to the printer to scan - the damned printer fired up and did a test scan - wirelessly - with no "standing on my head to make it work" issues.
One week later, we had two brand new iMac's in our house. Scanned wirelessly.
I've come to the light side! Mac's just flat work!
Do this:
1. Click Start and click Run
2. Type "msconfig"
3. Click OK
4. In the "System Configuration Utility" window, click "Startup" tab
5. "HP Digital Imaging Monitor" shall be part of the list. If not, uninstal e reinstall the software. (dont need to install the wireless section.)
6. Select the "HP Digital Imaging Monitor" check box
7. Click "Apply" and then click "Close"
8 Click "Yes" to restart.N
COCLUSION: The "HP Digital Imaging Monitor" shall be a startup program.
This does nothing to resolve the problems with not being able to scan wirelessly. I have the HP Digital Imaging Monitor running at starup all along. I went through hours of issues with support trying to resolve the issue of printing wirelessly. Ultimately I added a new printer port and used the printer name. The support people seemed to want to go straight to static ip configuration and I told them that this was unacceptable. So at least I can print, but I really need to be able to scan too. Still no resolution to scanning over the wireless link. I love this printer as a USB printer. Every feature seems to work. As a wireless printer, it is not up to the job. HP Support has been extremely frustrating. The are obviously aware of issues, but ware you down with work arounds that have side effects.
In our moderators forum we discuss the new plague of wifi crack tools that are causing a lot of calls for support. We do our best here with the forum sticky to help you get around that issue. But I read your post and you don't want to get around the issue.
Let me answer the question under discussion in this thread -> "Can ANYONE scan wirelessly?"
The answer is yes.

In Jan. got new vista laptop(32 bit hm prm ed)needed new printer for vista got h.p. photosmart wireless c4580. Could print (wirelesly) never could scan wirelessly. 2 1/2 wks. later-2 hours on web help page, 7 hours on phone with them controlling everything. Numerous complaint emails to hp Iget a level 2 tech tellme "oh hardwares defective". Take it back get officejet J6480 can't get hp "solution center" to even install 5hours later on phone again, they inform me it's a router issue. Linksys pretty much says B.S. With both of these printers you get a error can't find hp device when trying to scan wirelessly. So took it back and got a brother MFC-490cw wireless all in one that wen you try to wirelessly scan says "Failed to connect to device" 2 1/2 hrs. later brothers customer service says contact microsoft to see "how to update imaging device software drivers"- since computer is not detecting the printer/scanner. Huh the common thing ta dah "VISTA"!! I smell mac ad?!
and the operating system, I didn't see it posted here?
Rick
