Networking & wireless: Ethernet or USB?

Ethernet or USB?

I am using a 2wiregateway portal to access the internet , the internet seems to go in and out ...I know it's a settings problem..but could you possibly tell me if it's necessary or not to have both an ETHERNET CABLE and a USB CABLE hooked to the portal..??
