Internet security suite applications.

by rex.basham - 1/7/08 6:17 PM In reply to: Internet security suite suggestions by jmhal

I have used Zone Alarm, Symantec (aka Norton), McAfee, and Kapersky. I have not tried any of the free packages because I believe you get what you pay for. My money now goes to Kapersky. You can pick up 6.0 (which is still supported) for approx $19.00us at:

http://store.purplus.net/kainse60.html

I bought 6.0 for two machines at $29 each and got a free upgrade to 7.0 when it went GA. Nice and quiet, not a resource hog, very user friendly and very tunable. It will auto download new virus definitions every 4 hours by default and I read somewhere that they typically find new viruses and publish fixes for them faster than any of the other big name companies. If I could recall the link, I'd post it here for you.

cheers,
rexb

Internet Security Suite Suggestions for Jason

by rosiemyrosie - 1/7/08 8:30 PM In reply to: Internet security suite suggestions by jmhal

Jason, I've tried several of the top rated purchased Internet Security Suites. Honestly have been disappointed, running into similar problems as you mentioned. Most recently I had PC-cillin Security Suite from Trend Micro. Crashed my computer the first installation. Did the entire reformat thing and used it again for six months, constant problems with downloads, assistance, and just not worth the headaches and $$. Few weeks ago I got sick of PC-cillian after weeks of repeated e-mails trying to fix a problem with downloads. Finally, sent them an e-mail about my disappointment in their assistance to help me resolve the prolonged problem. With six months left, I simply deleted the program from my system. Very, very disappointed.

I have used at least six or more of the other top rated Suites over the years, especially every time I get more paranoid when virus news is heavy. But, now I've gone back to the Free downloads. Use Avast Anti-Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, for(anti-spyware) Spy-Gate,AVG anti-spyware,Ad-Aware, SpyBlaster. Everyone needs these three things,
1)Win-Patrol, 2)CCleaner, 3)Advanced Windows Care V2 Personal. Run 2 and 3 at every shut down, they are fast, fast. Spy-Gate is a real-time scanner, download protector, and browser hi-jack program. All these programs are great and FREE ! You can find them at C/Net Downloads, as well as articles regarding their use and effectiveness. Don't think I will ever again give my money to the safety software people. They simply don't get it all and the price? Well I feel safe and very good using the " People's software !"

thanks for all the replies

thank you everyone for your replies and input, for now I think I'm just going to use free versions of AVG antivirus and Zone Alarm firewall and just wait and see what security suites are released for the new year and how they stack up

on an unrelated note LSU beats OSU :(
as a Penn State fan I'm kind of happy, but I can't bear thinking that a Big Ten school lost to the SEC, tis a sad day

sorry for going off topic

You're welcome!

Glad to hear that you come-up to a decision :)

Don't forget to uncheck the installation of Ask Toolbar when you first install ZoneAlarm Firewall.
Ask Toolbar is not needed to use/run ZoneAlarm Firewall.

Nod32

by malc51 - 1/8/08 5:36 AM In reply to: Internet security suite suggestions by jmhal

Hi there, I used to have McAfee and was happy with it until they upgraded their security package and slowed my PC right down.

A friend introduced me to ESET Nod32 security which does what I need and is only a small bundle compared to McAfee. I found the default settings ample for my needs, but there is of course the 'advanced' option which is easy to use.

Try this link from there home site...

Hope this helps...

Malc.

ESET nod 32

by Maiyan820 - 1/8/08 12:13 PM In reply to: Internet security suite suggestions by jmhal

Jason, if you want to have complete peace of mind about your internet security, I suggest you uninstall all other internet security programs and then install ESET's NOD 32 antivirus & anti spyware or even better, the ESET Smart Security Suit. You will not sit with another malware related issue, ever. These are simply stunning programs. My pc was seconds from crashing when I downloaded the NOD and now it is vibrantly healthy. I credit the NOD with it.
Maiyan.
