Is this laptop worth anything ???

by Glynch69 - 1/3/08 11:24 AM

I have a Gateway SOLO 2500, about 10 yrs old, haven't used in 4 yrs.
The back says H1.7/BCSW, designed for Windows NT/98.
The black leather case might be worth more !?

If it isn't worth selling, can someone please instruct me how to clean it out completely before I donate it?

Thanks!

It's some 200MMX Pentium.

Sadly you can't do much with it today. I have such an unit but with 64MB RAM that runs Windows 2000. WHY? Because I use that to demo some of my software on less than optimal platforms (and show it's still fast and good for use in the field!)

But you can put 256MB in it or does it have that. Then install Linux from http://www.thehayesweb.org/jhayes/solo2500.html and it's cleaned plus works. Your choice to keep or not.

It will play MP3 files but with a 4GB hard disk a pocket MP3 player may be better. It could also double as a free Picture Frame device if you ever wanted one.

Might be easier to just throw out!

thanks Bob, but after doing a little research it might just be a lot easier to throw this thing away. I dont want to disconnect/disrupt my current pc at all, so connecting the old one to "kill" everything seems like more trouble than it's worth !! If I were just gonna throw it out, how can I remove anything important, without connecting it...sledgehammer ??

Just install that Linux. Don't worry about all the drivers

That will do a fair job. To really wipe it out, look up DBAN which is on diskette...

My 200MMX's future is the ... picture frame. The LCD is really good so that's where it's destined.

Yes.

But remember that very few will then put it back together. Might as well destroy the entire unit.

It's not working. DBAN is the answer here.

I have a 7 years old laptop which runs super-slow. I do too think you can't do much with it.
