Paper feed problem with Brother MFC5440 multifunction inkjet

by Alan Sobel - 1/7/08 3:41 PM

Paper feed has become intermittent. It often works when printing from the computer and often fails to print when copying. When it should print, there is a noise as of a motor/gear train running rapidly.
The printer is several years old. It is connected via USB to a white-box pentium running XP Pro SP2.
I have tried cleaning all the visible rollers and feed wheels, but this hasn't helped.

Then it's time to shop for a new one. The big hard lesson is that printers over two years old in this category can't be fixed for less than a new printer. Just take it to any shop in the USA and see.

Here is a page (type 152 and press enter at the bottom for page 152) from the Brother website that might be helpful

While I rarely agree with Bob's answers, this one I have to. Your printer should not be making loud noises when it prints. I would look at replacing the AIO with another Brother or a Canon. If you look at having someone fix it, your looking at a minimum of about $50 plus parts, plus labor.

Now I have not tried the link that was posted, so that might be of some help.

Paper-feed problem on Brother AIO

by Alan Sobel - 1/26/08 7:41 PM In reply to: I agree with Bob by hawk9934

Thanks to the responders. Your collective aura seems to have convinced the printer to perform properly most of the time. Things that may have helped are changes in the indoor relative humidity and the fact that I used a compressed gas duster to blow out what I think is the paper feed.
When paper is required, one small roller picks a sheet of paper off the stack and directs it to a second roller which in turn moves it into position under the print heads and then moves it as printing goes on. It's the second stage that was malfunctioning.
In general, it would be cheaper to buy a new printer than to get this one fixed. I find this annoying.
Anyhow, it now works most of the time.
