I have a Toshiba Tecra A2 Notebook (Pentium M 1.7 Ghz, 40 gb hdd, 512 mb ram) which I use for gaming (i know, i know...its not meant to be for that) but it works fine and I wanted to find out if there are any external graphic cards with usb connectivity available for this model.
thanks
dhruv
if you do find something like that, I'm looking for a internal keyboard, post here for any info....
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=USB20-VGA-N&cat=MON shows such but be aware that the speed is far too slow for gaming.
Bob
thanks for the link but that doesnt serve my purpose.
While it does add a video card via USB, USB 2.0 speeds are so slow that it is not a viable connection for 3D Gaming video.
I didn't want to leave you wondering about why not so I noted one such card so you can't write such are not available.
Cheers,
bob
I know FireWire is faster than USB, maybe you could throw in Firewire PCMIA card and then maybe look for a Firewire GPU, but don't count on it. You could check out one of those TV Tuner cards, but I don't know whether they are fast enough, and they are USB as well. If you want to play games, but at a price to buy another laptop you may check out:

A more reasonable offer would be the nice, yet pricey for performance:

I don't think that these will provide the performance your looking for, just external cards.. You may be able to squeeze a few frames out of these.
All in All, I agree with Bob...
Firewire is not faster than USB2.0. That's why it's dying out.
Also, external usage of devices that are designed to be used internally is just pointless. These external graphics cards, readyboost, etc etc, provide virtually no benefit at all. Not through personal experience, but through statistic and plain common sense of knowing that a USB device is not going to greatly enhance anything at all. In other words, the USB connection will BOTTLEKNECK (and therefore make redundant) the device pretty much before it can even be taken into consideration.
Seek alternative.
i didnt mean to sound as if you said anything wrong. its just that not much detail was given about the card you mentioned on the link.
anyways kudos to u for managing to find a card. i couldnt

USB 2.0 speed is some 480 million bits per second, that's easily converted to BYTES per second or 60 MBS. If you look at AGP transfer rates you see that the rates are some 100's of millions bytes per second. I didn't degrade USB 2.0 properly since not only must we send the data on USB, but for video we would have to send memory addresses as well where that's builtin to the AGP/PCI connections and not counted in the byte transfer rate. The USB 2.0 transfer rate falls to less than 30 megabytes per second.
The bottomline is that USB 2.0 will never do for those seeking a 3D card for gaming.
I hope you understand that this is not a solution unless you need presentation displays.
Bob
in response to the usb speed ,, yes it is to slow..
but the reason for making an external graphics card would be to save on heating and cooling the on the graphicscard and core system area. which would give greater performence to pc
the card could be made external and be connect to pcie slot enabling outside cooling for large graphics card...... small convienence..
... b/c some ppl provided links to monitors and I'm confused by that
The SIDECAR is an external video card. Again, it's a find effort but shows once again that you must be careful if you want to play 3D games on a laptop.
Bob
thanks dude. you convinced me into not going for external card. i guess i might be better off upgrading my desktop.
thanks again
But unless you REALLY need the portability, you'll be much better off getting a desktop for high end gaming
