Dell actually gave me the choice between XP and Vista Home Premium when I ordered my Inspiron E 1705 laptop. I opted for Vista and I hate it. It took me five months to connect to a network printer. I find that moving files and search functions are now a chore when they used to be convenient and intuitive under XP. In short, I look for every excuse to use my husband's XP machine, and I'm considering converting a dual-boot conversion with XP as the default. The only thing I do like about Vista is the "look", and that's easily sacrificed.
From the comments I've read from other users, I am no longer sure that Vista is inevitable. What we amy need is a better Windows XP for all.
You're missing at least two choices in this survey:
-- "I already got it but switched back to XP."
-- "I'm running it on my Mac"
I decided to retire my Compaq Presario 1215US that came with Windows ME and a free XP upgrade that has worked fine all these years...athough it is pretty slow.
Costco had a deal on a new(refurbished) HP Pavilion dv6604cl for $549 with free shipping that I couldn't pass up. It came with Windows Home Premium and was certainly not refurbished. I think refurbished just allows HP to sell new stuff with a reduced warranty. Anyway, it took four days to get it all updated and running the way I think it should run. I only needed an upgrade to Acronis home version 11 because version 8 wouldn't run.
It runs quite "fast" with 1GB of memory but Costco had a deal on Edge memory so I have two 1GB cards on the way. I hate to throw away two new 512MB cards so I will try selling them on ebay.
I still don't fully understand the differences between an Administrator and a Standard User but I am catching on.
One of the reasons I bought the computer was just to keep busy. I really don't believe a non-technical home user would be very pleased with Vista.
Overall, I am very pleased with the way Vista looks and runs.
I loathe Vista. Came loaded to my HP. I continue to have issues operating Office 2003 and my HP 2840 printer. I searched out and loaded any "fixes" and tweaks without improvement. Many times websites don't load properly, take forever or fail all together (no problems on the older, XP based system). Gadgets are cute, but not worth the trouble of the rest of the package.
Well written, almost a poem or haiku. Lets hope not an omen. Would you cast a spell on us? Vista by it's very nature is green. It will be green for us all. Green is the color of growth, of change. Vista will move the net along, this is essential for progress but progress means change and change is often painful. More painful for some, then others, I might add.
List your problems on the Vista forum.
Vista is slow slow slow! After two months I switched back to XP
There were so many problems I ended up going back to XP - although finding all the drivers for XP was quite a project.
I work in Technology in a school district, so I have to consider how new tech works with our current systems and in the hands of non-techies. We are staying with XP for the foreseeable future. However, we're ordering new computers with Vista then loading XP so we don't need to pay for a Vista license when we're ready to upgrade.
I haven't had any problems with it at all. The speed is great, I'm able to connect to my printers and network with my home desktop computer which is running XP.
I had already done most of the suggestions that others had posted about improving speed, mostly cuz I'm ocd about junk apps cluttering up hard drive.
Yup. I have vista and it does not give me the problems everyone is yacking about. I now have dreamscene (free ultimate from microsoft). Its really a dream.
It came with my new Dell in Feb/Mar, 07. After a frustrating 89 days, returned the Dell and bought an equivalent Mac at approx twice the price. Mac is cooler to use, but is not perfect. 1st one returned within a week and second one has had its RAM changed 6 months later. Did not have any problems with my 5 previous Dells.
Our agency purchased a new Dell Dimension E520 last summer/fall. I had 1GB of memory. I did not order a new Office suite software because I have MS Office XP Pro. After installing Office the first thing I noticed was the inability to change to Office Assistant. The error message "There is not enough memory available to complete this Operation." led me to purchase another 1GB of memory. This did not resovle the problem. I have been online and on the phone with Dell about this and have been instructed to do everything under the sun including restore my computer to factory status. Since they thought I might have adware or spyware which was using up memory. Finally the last tech said yes it is true that I could have 2GB of memory and only 993 available running Vista and no major problem. Well, that just doesn't sit well with me. Anyone with suggestions, I'm listening.
Half of my professional programs fail to function on Vista, and even Dreamweaver CS3 by Adobe fails to install.
I regret Windows XP but I have a premium family premium edition of Vista which does not allow the downgrade.
As a result, I continue to use my old computer, and I use the new one with Vista for simple tasks...
Vista obviously has some merits, but does not appear mature enough for the market.
I think Vista is simply a way for Microsoft to make more money. I heard you have to buy upgraded versions of Microsoft Office (and other software) to run on Vista. I'm sure in a year or two, MS will announce they are no longer supporting XP, which will be incentive for most people to spend their money and upgrade. XP is relatively stable, so I'll be holding out as long as I can.
Downloaded with Lenovo when purchase in July. Also, downloaded with lots of problems, crashed, froze, no internet connection...When I try to get help switched from Micr to Lenovo, Comcast, Linkys. Finally, with drivers installed, have good internet and wireless connections. Latest problem is error message with Windows Mail...C:...Windows Mail\Backup\old is corrupt and unreadable..Will not let me do backup or restore point...Lenovo said go back to factory settings..really do not want to since do not want to loose drivers that stablize wireless connection. Also, fingerprint reader does not recognize fingerprint. Would like that but not that big of a deal.
Bought Desktop in Nov, and Laptop in Dec. Use a computer about 6 hours a day. So far, I haven't noticed any difference from XP except that the salesclerk at Best Buy talked me into buying program upgrades for Office and Photoshop Elements. What's all the excitement about?
