I charged the battery in my Sony Ericsson Walkman W300i this afternoon, with the S.E. battery charger that came with the phone. The phone has had less than eleven (11) months of light use. After charging the battery for approximately one hour, I noticed the phone was flashing, instead of the normal "Fully Charged". I unplugged the charger from the wall socket and tried to turn the phone on. The display goes White for a moment and then dark for a few seconds and then White again. Was my W300i destroyed, while I was charging the battery? If not, what damage is the display light flashing on and off a symptom of? TIA, Lanny
My W300i has what is called the White Screen of Death or WSOD. Apparently, this is
a common problem with Sony Ericsson GSM phones and can be caused by a variey of things, including charging the battery. I took the phone Saturday morning, to the office of our primary cell phone operator. They are sending it to Bogota, for repair.
This happened to me too. After roughly 6 months of use I got the white screen. I actually think that what causes a white screen is that the screen is getting power but the cord that sends the display from the phone to the screen is faulty and weak, so even a little abuse can screw it up. The reason I think this is because after flipping my w300i open and closed a few times after getting the WSOD I was able to get it to display the interface. While in the WSOD, the phone's ear speaker did not work. Also, I was able to dial numbers and call people, and hear them talk only on speakerphone if I timed it right and hit the button for speakerphone. I could receive calls and answer them, but the menus are more complicated while in a call to get to speakerphone than they are during dial tone. haha. so anyways, its fixed now, new internals after about 6 weeks sent in for fixing. The warranty covers this kind of internal failure, so you'll probably only be out of a phone for a month and a half if you dont have a backup.
I did a lot of reading on the Internet and found that WSOD in Sony Ericsson cell phones is a very common problem. I used the service at http://www.wotanserver.com/en/ on 24 December 2007, to replace the Firmware in my phone. After that, it works perfectly again. Apparently, there was *no* internal damage to the hardware. The Firmware was corrupted. After that, I had someone locally Unlock the phone for me. It is now working perfectly, on the COMCEL network. Movistar told me the phone could not be fixed. From what I've read, WSOD can happen when: (a) Battery charging (b) Disconnect from PC (c) Turn on and off.
Possibly in other cases too? One person had a belief that Firmware branded to a carrier is more prone to WSOD than Generic Sony Ericsson Firmware. I installed a Generic S.E. Firmware for Latin America, when I used the Wotan Server service. I'm glad your phone is also working!
