I purchased Vista the first day it came out. I had my Windows Xp keep shutting down on me after I just purchased it. It was getting repaired already so I purchased Vista. I must say I do like Vista except for one thing. My older Scanner and my older Printer was not supported for working in Vista. That upsets me to no end as I paid for the top of the line products and to find out there not going to release drivers is just bad PR for Microsoft Vista, and Hewitt Packer who was the maker of my Scanner and my Printer. I'm still upset about this and it's been almost a year now. I did talk to customer service and couldn't help and said they would give me a discounts for new replacement products once available but I never got anything!
If your looking to upgrade to a new computer make sure your current scanner and printers work. If they do then upgrade to Vista, if not then you must think is it worth a new purchase to replace them.
Personally I would still like some satisfaction with Hewitt Packer on my Scanner and Printer collecting dust.
You should be able to open the box, take it out and use it....once you get this going you have to be acomplete techie to use it....the best and cheapest solution is to give your new vista machine to goodwill....take the tax credit and buy a Mac
I tried to upgrade to Vista fro XP Pro, having run the check programs from Windows (5 times including those in the upgrade) and one issued by the graphics card supplier. All said it was compatible. The upgrade has failed 5 times, each time on the 2nd reboot with a win32sys error. MS say tough do a clean upgrade ( and loose your installed software). Not really an option. I shall wait now until I need to upgrade the PC
Vista is awesome. I've been using it since it was in beta and i have it now on 5 computers in my house and i use it every day at work and i can safely say that Vista Home Premium 32bit version is awesome and i still have not seen any problems with it at all. It is the best operating system I've ever seen because it looks awesome, its very easy to use, and there are multiple ways of getting around a problems you may encounter. Now don't get me wrong XP was awesome, but boring, Vista is full of new features and is every bit as reliable as XP. Honestly i say that if you haven't used it yet or are afraid of what you have heard take it upon yourself and go and test it out with a clear mind (just don't test it on a piece of crap)
We are still running a Windows 98 machine in our office with 10 year old programs (Microsoft Office 97, etc.) because they work just fine. It also continues to run a few DOS based applications specific to our practice (ie: a really fast billing and insurance program) that won't run under XP.
The big mistake from the standpoint of speed was going to XP. No XP or Vista machine can match the speed of Windows 98.
I can readily see why the guy who went from 98 to Vista was stunned by how Vista seemed to be standing still. I experience it every day. When I first used a new XP machine I kept turning it off during the endless shutdown because I thought it was hanging.
Processor speed is meaningless. THe slow 10-year-old 98 computer is faster than the 10 times as fast 2007 machine. What matters is how fast the computer responds, not how fast it runs. 98 wins hands down.
I'm wondering about Linux. Does anyone know if Linux is faster to respond than XP and Vista on a new machine?

I am a long term Microsoft user. The last progressive release of Windows was XP. I work for the IT department in the corporate HQ of one of the largest Microsoft shops in the world. My most recent project was part of a suite of projects to evaluate the future Microsoft workstation and server products (project completed in December, 2007).
I bought my first ever Macintosh in late 2005 because with the rumors about Vista, I felt that I should hedge my workstation O/S bets. I'm so glad I did. I have three computers in my home office, my work XP laptop, my Mac Mini, and a Sony VAIO mini laptop with XP that I use when I am forced to use Windows (about once every 3 months). When I go on the road, I take my other Mac, an iBook, for my personal use.
If I were to start a new business, I would use Linux for my server OS and Mac or Linux for the workstation OS.
I must say that there is no discussion, I answered Linux User and below was a link named "disscus this poll", some people had a great experience with Vista, some others a horrible one, some are Mac users, and other like me Linux users, some are still runing XP, there is nothing to discuss, everyone has the right to run what they want if they get what they want.
Isn't it?
Vista came with a new Dell. Endured three months of poor performance, niggles and problems then thought - why should I put up with this?
Passed on machine to a colleague who promptly re-formatted the disk, bought another new Dell, this time with XP. Bliss!
So 32% Yes and 68% No!
and it runs fine although there is one glitch: If you go to computer, right-click on C-drive and go to properties and go to the quota tab and click show quota settings (click continue when the window pops up) It just opens another window with the same examine quota settings button, you click that and it opens another one etc.
Ever since my copy of XP frittered out on me , I've been a (happy) user of the openSUSE variant of LINUX ... When I made the switch , I have to admit , at 1st , I was more than a bit (cyber)queezy ... To my suprize , however , I've found computing under Linux is a more focused effort than I expected ... No more 'virus' hassles , and a generally (cyber)healthier environment has made me a LINUX convert ...
As for VISTA , I feel all the WINDOWS customers 'deserve' an apology from MS ... This is only a 'beta' system , not meant for mass consumption !
Vista Home Premium is cool and is easy to use. But start up and shuting time is very high!I have HP 6040in Pc with E4300 1.8Ghz 1 Gb RAM 200 Gb HDD a tv tuner card.can any body help how to increase speed?

Best thing I did - computer-wise - in 2007 was to up-, sorry, 'DOWN'grade from Vista back to XP.
