My girlfriend just got an iPhone a couple of days ago. It's very nice, at least the web browsing is, besides the lack of being able to play any apps online (such as games, or online music players). Being that that's the only thing that I do with it whenever I get my hands on it, I want to know if there's any dedicated machine that can do this seemingly anywhere internet browsing. We recently took a trip to California (we live in Nevada), and the whole way there and back I was on Safari browsing the internet. I want a device that can surf the net at places other than wifi hotspots but also has the ability to connect to hotspots. I also want something that makes the internet look just like it does on a PC, as the iPhone does. I was wondering if the Archos 605 wifi can deliver these two features. If not what can? Any help is of much use and appreciation. Thank you very much.
The device you’re looking for is called a laptop.
These are sold by many manufactures and come in price ranges from $500 to several thousand. Even the cheapest will have more than enough power to run your choice of 'browsers' includes IE6, IE7, FireFox 2, or even Opera 9. These devices almost universally include the ability to connect to Wi-Fi networks include A, B, G, and expensive models will also connect to N networks. By adding a cellular network card or tethering a compatible cell phone card you can also access a cellular data network! You can pick up a card free with a new data plane, or many smart phones can connect through blue-tooth.
Enjoy the wonderful world of the ‘real internet’ where you can access up-to-date flash and a plethora of different network types. All with a magnificently large screen which you can pick up in sizes ranging from 11.1 inches to over 17 inches! Make sure to get a tablet if you want to use a touch interface (which has been perfected through years of development!)
I am looking for a handheld device, but not a cell phone of any type. I already have a laptop, and it serves me well. However, I don't want to bring it everywhere with me and pull it out and set everything up, wait for it to start, etc.
Unfortunately there are effetely no other options besides using Wi-Fi hotspots or a cellular network. You might be able to buy a satellite connection in theory, but I don't know of any company that offers such, and if there are they would be much more expensive then even cellular plans.
The device you mentioned (Archos 605 wifi) will connect to B and G networks, so it will work in those hot-spots.
Is there a reason you don't want a cell phone? There are many smart phone devices (cheaper than the iPhone with a contract) that will let you browse the internet anywhere as well as connect to hot-spots for faster speed.
If you spend money on a good laptop, and keep the running programs slim you could probably get a browser running in 30-45 seconds form a cold start, not to mention that you could use sleep to be running in just a few seconds. (An ultraportable is suggested to minimize size and maximize battery life).
The reason I don't want a cell phone is because right now I already have one that serves me well and I'm not due for a new one anytime soon. Plus I don't want to break the contract and switch networks. I am just looking for a handheld device to surf the internet in places where a laptop would be too big. Maybe I will just wait for my contract to be up and the new iPhone to come out before I make any big decisions.
And today's Phone PDAs were neatly trounced by the unit you did use.
Why not what you used?
I'm not sure as to what you mean by the unit I did use. I'm looking for a device to use. I don't already have one.
Seemed to think highly of it.
It is my girlfriends iPhone.
Sorry, I misread one of your other post and thought you had bought the Archos 605.
Well, I think you already know all your options. If you want to surf at places where hot-spots don't exist then you will have to get a cellular connection whether it be a laptop card, an iPhone, or a smart phone. Since you don't already have a data plan you might be able to get the card free with a new data contract, check with your carrier if you want to do this. They will tell you what they can offer.
Sounds like a winning combo.
In parting you are looking at a laptop or maybe a cheep laptop like the the ASUS EEPC.
Bob
You are looking for a UMPC plain and simple. Google that term and look at the products that pop up. If those are too expensive for you then you are out of like and are better off buying an iphone.
The next alternative would be a Nokia Internet Tablet, but it requires a hotspot.
I don't think the UMPC would be any help, its physically smaller which meets one requirement, but they run XP/Vista and due to the limited computing power they take longer to boot up then a laptop. They also will only connect to hot-spots, not connect to anywhere like they wanted.
If they want a hot-spot only, small device then a UMPC will work, but for the $1000-2000 they cost, an ultra-portal laptop would seem to be a better overall investment for just a faster, smaller, computer.
Isn't the iphone set to be opened to homebrew sometime soon? With that done the apps you crave should start streaming in.
If that's the case maybe. I'm looking at the LG Voyager also since I have Verizon. Anyone have this? How is it compared to the iPhone?
