How can I make MSN Mail my default in Vista?

by yiang - 12/29/07 5:54 PM

I have a new laptop with Vista. Every time I click an email link from a website, and windows hotmail box pops up. Is there a way that i can have MSN mail set as my default mail? yes, I've tried going into default programs, but there is NO options to let you change the mail, it's stuck on Windows mail. I just want to be able to click an email address and have my MSN browser e-mail be the default. Any ideas?

Open help and support

search words: "email default" > follow instructions, use "custom" approach.

also note references to administrative accounts. Are you the administrator for this computer. Is your user account set up this way, as an administrator?

Treid that

I tired that before, and it won't give me the option to change. It's stuck in Windows Mail. I did a serach on my laptop with that and it just gave me a word pad applet with a bunch of source code in it.

Registry repair software

by Dango517 - 12/29/07 6:23 PM In reply to: Treid that by yiang

can be found here:

also defragment and check disk. This will take some time.

trying to fix it. You can take the time to do this or you can reboot the OS. Your choice?

I'll say no...

A registry cleaner might repair such a problem if an obsolete registry key were causing the problem, but that's unlikely in your case, while defragmenting is most likely unnecessary given the age of the system and would only enhance performance, not correct such problems.

I don't have an MSN Premium account myself so I'm unable to fully install version 9.5 and work with it myself, but I suspect the problem lies with Windows Mail. MSN Explorer 8 was designed to integrate with Outlook Express, feeding on its support for HTTP webmail and caching abilities to merge with the traditional Hotmail service and combine a unified "MSN Mail" feature. Unless they redesigned how MSN Mail works specifically for Vista users (Windows Mail doesn't even support HTTP mail) in version 9.5 the only option is to default to the Windows Live Mail webpage. You can try reinstalling version 9.5 and contacting MSN support, but chances are it's a lingering compatibility issue that will remain unresolved.

Some discussion about this...

by glenn30 - 12/30/07 6:14 AM In reply to: How can I make MSN Mail my default in Vista? by yiang

I did a Google search for "MSN Mail default in Vista" and see a discussion in the following link... don't know if it will help:

http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/29732352/setting-msn-email-as-defa.aspx

My impression is this may not be possible and you are stuck with Windows Mail; however, all may not be lost. It seems in Windows Mail there is a way your MSN Mail can be gathered by it. Not sure of the procedure but feel there is a way to do it. Do some research of how this is done if it's what you want.

Best of luck!

Glenn

Try that again

by Dango517 - 12/30/07 4:19 PM In reply to: How can I make MSN Mail my default in Vista? by yiang

take this path: start >control panel >default programs >set default programs > click on Windows Mail >choose default for this program >click on the mail function you want. You do have the program set up all ready don't you?

Add icons then change defaults

by Dango517 - 12/30/07 4:54 PM In reply to: Try that again by Dango517

I use Windows Mail my wife uses Yahoo Mail. On my user account I have the Windows Mail icons only and in hers the Yahoo mail icons are the only Icons.

start> all programs> right click on MSN Mail, do three things,1) pin to start menu 2)add to quick launch 3)Then drag and drop the icon to the desk top. Then right click on windows mail icon in all programs and delete it.

In your case since you only want MSN mail we'll take an extra step and disable windows mail making MSN the only mail service.

start > control panel >default programs >set program access and computer defaults >custom >use current or MSN mail if listed

Since I just did this and tested it I know it works.
