Your favorite iPod and other MP3 player accessories?

by Jasmineflower CNET staff - 12/4/07 3:26 PM

This week's podcast is delayed until tomorrow. In the meantime, I invite you to share some info on your favorite iPod and other MP3 player accessories.

What are they? Why are they so awesome?

We just launched a new site -- http://reviews.cnet.com/ipod-accessories/ -- dedicated to accessories, and I'd like to get some of the best ones featured there. Submit for a chance to be credited on the site!

Finally....an fm transmitter that works in my car! Keeps me from having to wear headphones. (Yeah, I know you shouldn't) And it saved me from paying someone to tear up my dashboard or whatever he has to do to install a new head unit or add an input. It's not something I'm willing to do to a car I'm only keeping a couple of more years.

I also like the Nike+ sport kit, which I do not use with Nikes. Love my power song (The Power, by Snap!). Got myself a Shoepouch in several different colors to go with my walking outfits and/or shoes. Another favorite accessory.

The best accessory is always a good pair of headphones

I'll also add a good FM transmitter like the Iriver AFT-100. But I can't wait for a wireless remote control for my 8Gb Creative Zen

An Archos DVR. Think there's some for other brands too.

Hey Jaz, long-time listener of your podcast and long-time contributor to PMP articles on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jw21). It kills me to see you bump your own topic twice, so I'd give my opinion. For me, I'd say DVR like the ones Archos has. I know, it's not audio-related, but I think it's high-time someone concentrated on the video and photo accessories and stuff.

Awesomeness begins at load.

I haven't actually got anything hardware-wise that I could call "awesome".

The UE-10 is a competent earphone, but it didn't (and doesn't, even after a remould) blow me away in terms of an aural experience - as many (significantly cheaper, natch) dynamic phones put it to shame. I do accept that it is a very good (probably the best) portable compromise, but a degree of 'awesomeness' is missing. Same to a lesser degree for the Shure SE530 and other ear gear I have. I have on rare occasions been known to plug a docked DAP into my main home headphones - the Sennheiser Orpheus. That is not so much 'awesome' but more like 'ridiculous'. The Stax SR-001 Mk II was probably the most intriguing earphone I've had running from a DAP, but yet again not 'awesome' due to practicality and sound concerns. I have some excellent headphone amps which I sometimes use ranging from a custom-built (with a battery box that weighs the same as about ten iPods) to Headroom Max's, but once again 'awesomeness' is not present.

I have a number of docks and cases which don't fall into the 'awesome' category, although some of them are very good and in daily use. Neither my Sounddock nor iPod Hi-Fi are 'awesome', merely decent. The M-Audio DX4 I sometimes use with DAPs are very good but not 'awesome'.

Which is why I turn to software for 'awesomeness'. j.River Media Center is awesome. It does everything I want from a music syncer and player, and then some. It plays nicely with iPods, USB Mass Storage, MTP and other players - all at the same time if needed. As a music player it supports ASIO for sound output, and accepts DirectX plugins for pro-grade EQ and other effects. As an HTPC front end it has more features (including multiroom support) than you can shake a Harmony Remote at.
