Can't access a specific website going thru my router
by bartggc - 12/6/07 2:44 AM3 weeks ago, suddenly I was unable to access a website (www.joedios.com) , but the rest of my internet activity remains ok.
I access the internet thru a D-Link DI707P router which connects to a broadband modem.
What I tried:
- I tried using IExplorer, Firefox and Opera from my laptop: no success.
- I tried from the other 3 computers in my network: no success.
- I tried with a direct Dial-Up connection from my computer: SUCCESS. (so the problem was either my router or my ISP)
- I called my ISP and they recommended connecting directly my computer to the modem, bypassing the router: SUCCESS. (so the problem was not the ISP, btw, the ISP tech guy could access this website without problems.)
- I called D-Link support, and the D-link rep could not access the website as well, and this was very strange. He just said he could not access so the problem could be the website, but I CAN access if I bypass the router.
Other data:
- Firmware on the router is the latest version (never updated it, but when I checked for updates, mine was a newer version!), and D-Link support confirmed this as well.
- My router is configured on Dynamic IP Address
- I have tried assigning different primary and secondary DNS addresses, even from other ISPs in the router
- I have released/renewed the IP in the CMD with the ipconfig: No Success
- I have reset the router to factory settings a couple of times doing a backup restoration first and the 2nd time starting from zero: No success.
- Tried accessing the website using the IP address instead: No success.
- A friend suggested reducing the MTU number by 50, but since my connection is Dynamic IP Address, there's no MTU option.
Any ideas in how to solve this?

I don't know which model you have so you'll have to select the right one.
Log in to the router. Look for the firewall setting and turn the router firewall off. Make sure that you have a good firewall, like Zone Alarm or Comando.
While you're there
Broadcast SSID
Use WPA security.
Since you connected without the D-Link, we know it's probably the firewall setting blocking you.

by RagingAura - 12/6/07 10:26 PM In reply to: It could be a firewall setting by PudgyOnecheck the filters or restrictions sections in the config utility. an admin can set certain sites with certain keywords (ie. adult or shopping) or specific websites and all users will be denied access. another thing could be that your network was attacked by something masked as that domain and your router is refusing connections in order to protect you. check the log, it might say stuff like (insert malicious action here) access denied, ip address blocked.
No filters, and apparently no problem with the IP address

The IP address of the website I can't access is 64.235.233.38 and this is the latest log I got, which mentions other attemps, but nothing related to the mentioned IP address.

No firewall option :(

I tried finding the firewall settings but my version of the router doesn't have a configurable router. I called D-Link and they confirmed that I have an older version of the 707P for which I have the latest firmware update (no new one was issued for my version), which doesn't let you modify the Firewall settings.
I also found a way to decrease the MTU to 1400, but it didn't solve the problem.
Any other ideas?

The broadband router also has a firewall. Make and model would help. To access the one I have I type http://192.168.1.1/
It sounds like your isp's broadband router has the firewall working and has blocked it or for some reason, your isp started blocking this website. Call and ask them. They may even walk you through the process to log into the broadband router.
Then comes to the next thing. I do NOT use Windows firewall. I use Zone Alarm. It protects me both incoming and outgoing. Windows firewall(before Vista) only block incoming. With Zone Alarm, it will prompt you whether to allow or deny.

Broadband Modem

Could it be that my laptop and the router are handling the DNS differently?? (I have tried setting my router with the same DNS that I put in my laptop, without success)
The modem is an ARRIS model TM502G.

So if you're connecting to the broadband router directly and getting there, there is definitely something in the wireless router that you have to find. Snoop around at every setting in the router, just make sure you broadcast SSID, Use WPA security and nothing else. Some router have a block list(black list) and an allow list(white list) look for something like this and maybe you'll stumble upon the setting to put the website on your allow list.

I know sometimes I have some strange things happen after an electrical storm or a power outage or flicker.

For me, I am experiencing this over a Netgear WNR834Bv2 router. Connect directly to the cable modem, OK. Connect through the Netgear modem, a particular site is inaccessible. I have experimented adjusted the MTU through a whole series of different values, and still I get nothing.
Have you solved this sort of problem yet?

Log into the router
If you are using security other than WPA, then change the SSID to a different name, this will make it easier to log into.
Update the firmware, downloaded from above
Broadcast SSID
Use WPA security
use nothing else
In wireless settings, use channels 1,6 or 11
Use WPA security
mode is b and g
under WAN setup, disable SPI firewall
save the settings and log out.
Log into the cable router
Turn both routers/modems off for 20 seconds and then restart
after 30 seconds, try to log into your Netgear router using the wireless connection.
Now try the website in question.
Is it now accessible?
Please make sure that you use some type of firewall on your computer. I do NOT use the Windows firewall in XP. I use Zone Alarm, it's free and protects your computer from incoming as well as outgoing.

maybe that website is actually malicious or has been compromised, or a transfer protocol or something is corrupted on their server, or maybe the dang machines just hate you.
what kind of website is it in the first place.

. I was out the country on holidays and when I came back (20 days later) I tried and was able to succesful access the website without problems.

So i have the same problem

When I connect through my router, no luck with a specific website, but all others are fine, when I directly connect to the modem, I can connect just fine. No other computer on my network can access the site through the router.
I have changed/flushed my dns, reset the router, the modem, called linkysys, called my ISP, no help whatsoever.
Please, any ideas?
