Hi,
I have a weird question that I've been trying to resolve for a few days. I have a Dell Dimension 4700 Pentium 2.8 GHz 80 GB Maxtor hd (master) and a 500 GB Seagate HD (slave) both SATA and 4.0 GB memory and Windows XP Pro SP2.
The thing that happens is this, When I access a folder on the second HD the computer slows down, and I have noticed on the task manager that Explorer.exe is taking up 50% of CPU usage and the system idle process is also taking up 50% of CPU usage. The main number below the CPU is being used from 40-60% of total CPU use.
Now, I have all my data on the second hard drive, the second hard drive has 2 partitions (400 GB and 100 GB) I have noticed the resources only go up when accessing a single folder containing videos. It goes up but never comes down until I reboot even idling the CPU is working at +50%. I have run anti spyware, anti virus, anti adware software but it doesn't find anything. What else can I do to stop this annoying problem?
Thanks.
Al

This is not an unknown bug. I can fix it by unregistering the DLL that does the image/preview/thumbnails. There is no sign Microsoft will cure this one.

Thanks so much! I'll try that today when I get home from work. This was driving me so mad that I was close to doing a Windows XP Pro re-install! Now, I wonder why this didn't happen before on a similar computer with the same hard drive setup.
Could just changing the view to just list the items do the same as doing the reqgistry tweak? that is to disable thumbnail views?
Thanks
Al
I had to unregistrer the shell image preview dll. But the fix is to use a file browser that isn't going to try to read all the files to get an icon,
