As a monitor...

by veniceneon - 12/22/07 11:28 AM In reply to: Bought a Maxtent by edwin_1953

Fine, but a lot of us are using them as TV's. Go look at a Samsung like I did at a friends house last week and be prepared very much to notice the difference. I did!

Off brands - Insignia

by yucca1 - 12/22/07 7:52 PM In reply to: please specify (technical) reasons for the Vizio hate... by shawnlin

Just don't buy a Best Buy Insignia - Best Buy doesn't stand behind them and can't fix them and Insignia is also no help. Could not even get info on mfg. from either one. Had trouble after 18mths., which I have been unable to get repaired and then shut off and won't power on after 24mths.

Since others are talking about Syntax and Olevia....

I'll say that I use a 30 inch, wide screen, Olevia HD LCD TV (1080i) as my computer monitor and I'm thrilled with it. Have had it for two years now without any problems. Only wish I had paid what I see them sell for now. I paid $1200 then; now I think you can get one for $600 or $700. Great value in my opinion.

Olevia = near Sony quality for Vizio prices.

by Smart_Buyer - 3/3/08 12:19 PM In reply to: Since others are talking about Syntax and Olevia.... by Rollbar

I too feel that Olevia is the best value.

Their TVs use either LG.Phillips or Sharp panels depending on the size.

Some Olevia TVs also use a best in class Video processor, helping these TVs to beat all the established greats in movie cadences, noise reduction, anti aliasing and resolution scaling tests.

Sony will start using the same Sharp panels in their top of the line TVs.

Westinghouse use Chinese AU panels, and Vizio uses a more cost effective version.

In area of overall LCD panel and video quality, based on Wired, Electronic House, Consumer Reports, etc.

1. Sony
2. Olevia
3. Sharp
4. JVC
5. Toshiba
5. Samsung
6. Philips
7. LG
8. Westinghouse
9. Vizio

Vizio

by sunbroker - 12/29/08 9:59 PM In reply to: please specify (technical) reasons for the Vizio hate... by shawnlin

I have had two Vizio Plasma go bad in three years. They did replace one soon after I bought it. Thank you. But that only lasted about a year and half. Don't fall for the low price.

Buy another brand.

Poor Customer Service

by CQGirl - 12/30/08 12:01 PM In reply to: Vizio by sunbroker

I had the "Pop of Death" happen to my Visio 32" exactly on the 2 yr. mark after purchase. I tried to get help from the Visio online tech support folks. All they wanted to do was tell me who in my area (basically no one) could fix it for me for almost the cost of a new TV. I didn't save 2 yrs. for a "disposable" set.

As a last resort, I took it back to Sam's Club and told them my story. As soon as I gave them the exact purchase date (from my check book) they looked up the sales receipt and gave me full credit toward a new set. Now, THAT'S customer service. No begging or pleading, just a polite inquiry and complete customer satisfaction followed!!!!

I did receive a tip from the salesman in their electronics dept. I'd like to pass on. It seems the problem in most flat screen sets is that they run alot of electronics that produce heat (as a computer does). However, they have no internal fans to dissipate that heat (as a computer does). I suppose if you are an electronic tech you could install a computer fan in the set. Since I'm not, I purchased a small, silent, high-flow fan and put it behind the set to keep air circulating. The set is alot cooler to the touch with this fan. Hope it actually helps!

Not to mention, I also purchased the 3 yr. extended warranty this time for 4 yrs of total coverage. I also switched to a Magnavox set. Hope all this keeps things working for me. My last television was 18 yrs old and still worked great when I bought the Visio for the HiDef.

I have a 23" Sony LCD that does not have a fan, but there is a fan on my 55" Sony and my 46" Toshiba LCD TVs. The fans are very quiet.

Vizio is not meant for long term use.

by justknow08 - 1/25/09 6:35 AM In reply to: please specify (technical) reasons for the Vizio hate... by shawnlin

I purchased three Vizio’s, because the picture look pretty good, cost and it’s an American company. The first TV was 50 Plasma in Oct 2006. I paid about $2000. and now the TV is selling for half that. Well, first the sensor stopped working on the 50” so I need to get up to turn on and off and any other menu options. Next went the sound no sound but, still great picture. I had a one-year warrantee and purchased a 2nd Year. I called Vizio and they do not want to talk to me because the one-year passed and the 2nd was with Sam Club. So 2 years 4 months later I need to buy a new. Back to foreign TV’s for me.

Love the picture - Bummed at how short it lasted. GREEN

by ChadwickJ - 1/26/09 6:56 PM In reply to: please specify (technical) reasons for the Vizio hate... by shawnlin

Hi

I just wanted to mention a problem I had with my Visio SV470XVT. Firstly, I love the picture, and have been thoroughly digging the picture quality with my Dish Network HD DVR. Even upscaled SD DVDs look awesome.

Last night, 33 days into my Sears 30 day return policy I was bragging about the picture quality to a group of people at a gathering at my house. Out of nowhere the picture flashed green, then wherever there was black on the picture the screen turns bright green. I mean bright, solid green! It's like a posterization video effect. I tested that it wasn't my DVR or DVD/VCR. I played a tape through HDMI2. It all looks the same.Green nostrils, green shadows, green SD columns on the left & right of SD programming. Frickin' GREEN!

Luckily Sears said they would work with us on an exchange. I thought about moving up to the Samsung Series 6 630, but that's more money, and I couldn't find out od Samsung has their own service plan. Sears' service is loke 450.00 for 5 years. I found that Visio will cover the TV for 4 years past the 1yr that comes with the set for 250.00. So I think I'm just going to get another SV470XVT from Sears and buy the Visio service plan. At least I'll know I'll have a working TV for the next 5 years. I am pissed that the TV crapped out so quickly.

What can you do? Oh well. Don't count me as a hater though. I'm just disappointed.

UPDATE: Dead Pixel

by ChadwickJ - 2/6/09 11:32 AM In reply to: Love the picture - Bummed at how short it lasted. GREEN by ChadwickJ

Well I got my replacement Visio 47" from Sears. I had to take it there myself. Now a week later I notice a couple of dead pixels in the center of the screen. This time Sears is sending out a guy to verify that I'm telling the truth, and they will come replace my TV. I'm hoping 3rd time is a charm. Normally I'd be inclined to upgrade, but the Sony and Samsung TVs have such expensive protection plans through Sears. I don't think they have them at the company themselves. So I would be incurring the cost of an upgraded TV, as well as the 500.00 or so to protect it for 4 years, where Visio will do 5 years for 239.00. What cha gonna do?
