Simple, go to, http;//www.vistanews.com and if you need help with XP go to www.winxpnews.com. the gal who is the editor of both can give you all the answers.
Get rid of the "Vista Virus" and install Ubuntu. You can order a free CD or DVD from the Ubuntu Linux website, try it first as a live cd. It is fast, secure and a much better operating system. We have dumped various versions of windows on most of our machines at home and the office (in fact this one I'm using is the last of our XP machines). Vista is the worst piece of junk I've seen, as you say, a step backward! Bob
Ubuntu for me won't even install on my newer hardware. I had to put it on my older systems and even then it's slow and buggy. I have been using Linux off and on for years and have yet to have one distro that I would call more stable than XP or my current install of Vista.
I've installed it on a P-III 550, a Celeron 800 at one end of the spectrum and, most recently, on a new Core2 Duo. It just works. Did you get the right version of the distro? Attempting to install a 64 bit version on a 32 bit system, isn't going to work. Did it work as a Live-CD? What was the newer system that it didn't work with and how much RAM does it have?
I would switch back to XP. It was the only way I could get my new laptop to work properly and was well worth the 12 hours of effort to resetup all the drivers etc. NB to kill Vista for xp install you need to repartition (corrupt) the hard drive to fool the system into accepting the xp install disc reformat. (otherwise vista blocks the xp install).
The only way I know would be to downgrade to XP. Vista is a foolish operating system and a memory hog. 2 GB or more will help, but ultimately Vista is the new ME. I support Vista users every day and you can turn off protected mode and UAC to rid yourself of interuptions while working online, but otherwise just add more RAM or back down to XP.
Yes, I said "Upgraded". The usability was definitely improved so I consider it an upgrade.
She bought a new Dell laptop that came with Vista Home Premium and discovered that her games weren't compatible, nor was her existing printer. I was able to install XP, download the XP drivers and she's a happy camper. ![]()
Dear Darren S., there is no hope, you are screwed, I am too and many others as well. The only way to go is to downgrade to Windows XP to gain speed and compatibility to your older software. Welcome to the club, I am frustrated with Vista, on my work computer, for eight months now. My three home computers are running Windows XP and it is not going to change for the next few years.
hi mate, i would love to dump the vista but am told by hp, if i do, my computer will not be covered by my warranty agreement. i think windows ME was better than vista. i go in to properties and run a lot of my files on xp but if i completely wipe it, the warranty wont stand. check with hp first before you change it. i am very new to computers but have the bug now. i am learning a lot from cnet members. thanks guys. at 61 yrs old, i never thought i would be addicted to a machine. merry christams guys cathy
is it possible to go back to XP if the machine came with Vista...
I'm ready to give up on this one...
DARREN, I ALSO HAVE VISTA THE ONLY WAY I COULD SPEED UP VISTA IS TO PUT 2 MORE GIGS OF RAM, EVERY COMPUTOR PLACE SAYS VISTA HAS TO HAVE AT LEAST 4 GIGS TO OPERATE PROPERLY.I HOPE THIS HELPS,
yours jackson71@shaw.ca
MajorHard have done it for 2 decades. As fast a new processor, chip, memory, drive et al have increased the power and the speed of a professional computer, they were called that when first invented (I know that, as the corporation I worked for funded MH for the original DOS, how does Homer go "Doh!"), MH have consumed every and any advance in processing power and look at the view is no different, MH wonīt/canīt change. As long as MH have the monopoly that they do then things will never change. Little Red had that monopoly before and they suffered the consequences, these days, as always, it is the poor user that pays, many times over, upgrade (more money), upgrade again (even more money), never any guarantee, they donīt even have the courtesy to say "thank you". Well that is my MH rant off my chest. But to be serious you are back to the normal basics, DOS based, defrag, clean up etc, that is, of course when MH have sorted out all the security holes that have come back with a new OS release, they never learn, argh they donīt want to, that doesnīt make $$$$$$$, sorry Iīm ranting again, I am a very reluctant MH user, but Pears have always been expensive and UNIX, I am a systems programmer, is a technical language. Sorry to be so negative but I stuck with 1895 for 8 years because my faith in their ability to do anything right has been sadly and inevitably been proven correct and that upgrade only happened beacuase my 8086 PC finally died, oops Iīm ranting again
Microsoft has a BIG Key to insert into the back of your new computer to wind it up and that will help Vista work faster. If the key is to expensive I suggest that you do what the rest of us are doing. Sticking with XP. Windows seems to be retreating to a OS that looks like it was written by Playschool. Here's an earth moving suggestion. How about a bullet proof OS that heals itself by reloading every week and self corrects any problems developed in that week. Everyday you can boot up with no supprises. All the fluff can be added to this system after it has proven itself. But then Microsoft won't be able to come out with fluff II.
hi darren, i hope this finds you well and enjoying the holiday season. i live in tasmania, australia and i would like to share my thoughts on the vista program. i really do think that windows has taken a huge step back in time with this program. i only bought my new computer 3 months ago and have had nothing but trouble with this program. my computer constantly blue-screens and freezes. i have contacted the manufacturers of my computer and they tell me that microsoft are aware of the problems and are going to bring out some things to rectify these problems with in the next few months. i am not allowed to install xp on my computer because if i downgrade, my warranty will not be covered. hope they fix this soon. it is so annoying. i would like to wish all the cnet members a very healthy, happy and prosperous xmas and new year. cathy glenorchy. tasmania, australia
downgrading vista will not void your hardware warranty as shoddy software will not damage your hardware, you just won't get support for vista. no big deal because you're be better off with a more stable xp sp2, you'll be more productive. another option is to upgrade to Ubuntu or RedHat linux. good luck
