WELL, FRANKLY I'VE NEVER SEEN A RAVE REVIEW FOR........

by Riverledge - 2/28/07 8:12 PM In reply to: I can't say anything good or bad about Vizio but... by NFredT

ANY PHILIPS/MANGAVOX product; so why are you so disappointed. PHILIPS NORELCO makes great mens' shavers; also lightbulbs.

Based in the NETHERLANDS, PHILIPS' primary market is Europe. They invented the "Compact Cassette" and co-developed the "CD" with SONY.

MANGAVOX is their entry level line in the USA.

I went with a name brand...

I was recently in the market for a new flat-panel HDTV, and the Vizio 46" LCD and 50" plasma caught my eye because the picture quality seemed decent and the price was good. After doing extensive research, however, I became more leery of buying an off brand. I ultimately decided to go with plasma, and when I realized I could get a Panasonic 50" plasma for 1999 (compared to 1699 for Vizio), it was really a no-brainer. The picture quality on the Panasonic is incredible, and I feel like I made the right choice.

Vizio Experience

by jokomoto - 3/6/07 10:44 PM In reply to: please specify (technical) reasons for the Vizio hate... by shawnlin

I picked up the 37" at Costco. Had it for a week. I was very impressed with the color control in both HD and standard digital mode. The remote was busy but had all the buttons you need. Lots of features for the price. However, the picture was not very good for non HD standard def digital sources, and horrible for standard def analog sources. Blurry picture. The speakers sounded tinny. The contrast was not very good. The picture, even in HD mode was washed out. DVD playback (without an up-converting unit) was slightly blurry. I returned it for a Sharp 37" and am very happy with the decision. Color control is difficult, and not very accurate. It is crystal clear in HD mode, good in standard def digital and acceptable in analog standard def. DVD playback is good. Excellent contrast, the picture is bright and sharp. Bottom line, you get what you pay for.

I like my 42" Vizio

by kcfvegas - 9/16/07 11:09 AM In reply to: Vizio Experience by jokomoto

I bought a 42" 1080p Vizio at Costco for only $999.99 for my bedroom and I am very happy with it. The picture looks good and sharp in HD, but what surprised me was how good the standard def picture is. The sound is OK, but not great, and the remote is back lit (which is nice for the bedroom). It also has a decent set of adjustments, which I had calibrated to give it a very nice picture. One down side is its fairly low contrast ratio. In short I find it to be a wonderful bedroom TV, and a very good TV for someone who is on a budget.
There must be a reason that Vizio is now the biggest selling LCD brand in the country. You don't sell that many TVs by just being cheap. There are better looking TVs out there, but Vizios give one of the best combinations of low price and good quality. Their warranty is also better than most, with a two year in home warranty when you buy it at Costco.

Reason for not buying any, not jsut VIZIO

by bigduke - 3/10/07 6:07 PM In reply to: please specify (technical) reasons for the Vizio hate... by shawnlin

Prices are just one factor. The standards are not firmly set,
and unitl the final decision of format and what will be broadcast
or on cable, it would be taking a chance to buy now.

What standards for TV are not set?

Vizio, or not.

When shopped around for my first LCD TV, I too was tempted by the low price of the Vizio, and a few of the other off brands that were mentioned. One thing that I noticed on one of the smaller models is the lack of QAM support in the tuner. If people jus tknew about all of the specifcations that could kill the thrill of their new LCD TV, they would be very careful to study the range of specifications, and what they mean. What they mean is really better said, "how will this specification effect my happiness with this product. Not having QAM could be a real stick in the mudd if you want to get your local HD channels from your cable company for no added cost over basic cable costs.
The true video-phile might want a 120hz scan rate if he wanted true HD Blueray at its best. Most LCD panels will be 60hz, and be perfectly fine for the vast majority of people.
The main thing to consider is that your local Circuit City may offer a 90 return policy, so if you don't like it, you can bring it back. Costco offers a 2 year warranty with the TV with no added cost. The extra warranty is a nice thing to have. Got to run, more to come.

There seems no order here so I love my Vizio

by batfang - 12/20/07 2:28 PM In reply to: please specify (technical) reasons for the Vizio hate... by shawnlin

I appreciate quality electronics. In my single days when I had money I purchased electronics from Denon, M&K, Bose and other tops. Now that I lead the married with children life like Al Bundy I have to be a smart shopper. Two years ago I purchased a Sharp Aquos for my bedroom and I love it. The television cost me $900.00 and it was only a 26 inch LCD. I wanted to buy a bigger LCD TV for my shop but with oil at $3.20 a gallon and paying for tuition for kids in school I had to go smart shopping. I wanted a new 37" LCD and I decided to purchase one for myself this Christmas. I could not afford the Bravia I liked so I turned to Consumer Reports and went shopping. I visited Circuit City and Bestbuy. It was clear the sales people here would be no help as they spent more time trying to sell me on installation, extended warrantees and pushed whatever brand tv paid them more commission so I went to costco where several tv's were smartly placed next to each other providing a perfect forum for choosing a tv based on picture quality. Long story short I picked the Visio 37". I liked the picture quality, two HDMI inputs, the remote design and the price. The best part is Cosco doubled the warrantee from one to two years, the price was $50. cheaper than CC or anyone else and they give a 90 day return open box or not. The TV is great, get over the name ownership thing and buy this tv.

Mass production,cheap labor =

by dinox64 - 12/20/07 5:04 PM In reply to: There seems no order here so I love my Vizio by batfang

Low quality products that fit the needs of many but in the long run will fall to the way side. Take a look at American car manufacturers playing catch up to the Japanese. Only until recently did American autos start making the best reliabilty and value holding lists. But still paying for consiquences and reeling from the past. Vizio sees in the American population flat panel, big screen fanatics biting at the bit to own one. So they and total no name companies are flooding the market with a minimal quality product that even people that can't afford are buying them rationalizing the low price as why it's a good buy.
Take a look at Samsung. They came out in the Plasma market, but realizing the scare people have of the early Plasmas, they now have joined the crazed market for LCDs and are concocting contrast ratios to swing buyers to them. Yes Vizio is making Cnet and CD lists as best buys. They're not on the best picture or quality lists.

It's more than cheap labor and mass production...

by veniceneon - 12/20/07 6:34 PM In reply to: Mass production, cheap labor = by dinox64

It's outsourcing cheapest bidding for component boards as well. Who make the power supplies one month or the next? Who makes the main logic boards one month verses the next? Are they exactly identical? Will they perform flawlessly integrating one sub contractors component package verses another in the final unit? Well sometimes yes and sometimes no. The early PC computer industry is a prime example of glitches that can and so happen. Yeah that program get products cheap, but are they reliable. I'll reserve judgment for all the "I love my Vizio comments" to a later date. Most of those comments were folks who have had their sets for less than the one year factory warranty. Let's see what happens at two or three years, and yeah they should last that long. Afterall they are still considered major appliance purchases.

As for me,I LIKE not love my Vizio, when it works. But I'm on my second set in 120 days. The first died a month ago. It took 3 and a half weeks and how many football games missed(?) to get another under warranty and guess what, the second one... the sound has cut out twice while using it with X Box 360 games. The sound comes right back after the TV is rebooted but should a one week old set be doing that? I applaud Vizio for trying to bring flat-screens to the masses cheap. But they need to be reliable or the masses will relegate them to the scrap heap of companies that came before them.

S-video Input broken loose.

by Ba Van Le - 12/20/07 9:21 PM In reply to: please specify (technical) reasons for the Vizio hate... by shawnlin

I recently purchased P50HDTV. But to get a good vision I have to install the S-Video Input connection. Because the Input S-Video Connection is in the position vertical ( gravity pull out ) that mean it's paralIel to the vertical of the TV, I have to tape the S-Video connection in the back of the front panel. It's good plama TV for the price 1,299.99. But in the long run, let see.

Olevia Rocks

by sith_killer_99 - 12/20/07 11:39 PM In reply to: S-video Input broken loose. by Ba Van Le

Well, there are a lot of different low cost HDTV's out there on the market. I recently decided to buy one of the low cost HDTV's.

I did a lot of research, I am very careful making final decisions for any purchases. It seems every review I read said that Olevia was a good product for the money.

I bought a 32inch Olevia and was happy with the $425.00 price tag.

With that said, I understand that this is not the top of the line 1080p high def TV that I will want for my living room. I bought this TV to watch here in Afghanistan and will ship it back home for use as my bedroom TV once I get home.

With that said, I believe that ultimately the HDTV that consumers buy should fit with their needs. For me those needs were simple: a basic HDTV, low cost, good picture quality, HDMI input and finally capable of acting as a monitor for my laptop.

For all of this, Olevia was the best choice.

Now, once I start looking for an HDTV for my living room I will go with a higher quality, more expensive set. My needs will be very different.

The bottom line, do the research and go with what's best for you.

three years and done

No problems at all with my Vizio purchased in summer of 2005. Now, starting the day before yesterday, half the screen works and the other half doesn't. Sometimes it's all balck and sometimes has vertical colored lines. Out of warranty, out of luck. Pixels on one side are gone. Had I known that I was buying a $2000 TV that would only last three years, of course I would not have made this purchase. You get what you pay for. Bottom line in anything. I don't see 400 postings of hate for top of the line brands. Buyer beware...

LCD TV

by Helmut Diebold - 12/21/07 1:09 PM In reply to: please specify (technical) reasons for the Vizio hate... by shawnlin

Most of the so called brand names do not make their own lcd's. There are only a few lcd manufacturers and the all buy from them. The picture quality realy depends on the the lcd. Yes the brand names do have a better warranty and hope they have better service after all that is what you are paying extra for.

Bought a Maxtent

by edwin_1953 - 12/22/07 4:58 AM In reply to: please specify (technical) reasons for the Vizio hate... by shawnlin

I would buy a Vizio if the price difference is as great is when i purchase my 50 inch Maxtent especially if you just use it as a monitor as most people do.I personally can't see any difference in the picture quality in a name brand to a off brand, and isn't that why you buy a tv or flat screen for?
