Who makes your new PC? Most companies will have online support. Let them "take over" your PC, and make adjustments. How many 'TOYS' have you added, like say, GOOGLE??? That'll definitely put the brakes on your machine!!! Lemmenoe whassup?
I have a new HP laptop with Vista. It has 2GB of ram and a 240 GB hard drive. It's very fast and I noticed it had 75 processes running on start-up when it was new. I haven't pared down the start-up menu because it's so fast I don't need to. I'll get around to it some day when I feel it's not fast. I can't say what slows your Vista down but there is a surefire way to take your start-up down to a minimum which should speed it up quite a bit. Google for "Answers that Work". This site has almost any file listed on a start-up. It tells you what the file is and what you can and can't do about removing it from the start-up menu. You may find a few files that aren't in it but very few. The files I haven't found in "Answers That Work", I've found by Googling the file. There are plenty extra programs that merely tell you what your options are on Vista in an HP computer and these can all be removed from start-up. My Vista laptop is far and above the speed of my 3 year old XP HP desktop. I know this may not address all your problems but it will go a long way in speeding things up. Good luck.
Hi Darren. It's machine nature to gradually slow down. Try defragmenting your hard drive. Over time, you create and remove files and folders. All that empty space is scattered throughout your hard drive and files get split up all throughout the drive. Defragmenting will combine all the broken up (fragmented) files so the files and programs can open (and close) faster. It's not just Vista, but all Windows OSes. It's Microsoft, what can I say? Also, consider removing any unused programs. And do a disk cleanup once in a while (1-2 times a month) and your PC speed should be relatively faster. Well, that's just my 2 cents. Hope this helps.

...that Windows is the only major OS that requires manual defragmentation and disk cleanup to maintain performance? The reason is the poor design of the FAT and NTFS file systems when compared to modern journaling file systems as used in other OSs.
Poor engineering will out...
Vista defrags automatically. You don't ever need to do a thing.
I own 2500 long play records and 250 CD'S is it illegal to download some or the bands on my lp's as ai have purchased the music before I am a senior with eye trouble this is a little easier.

Is peer-to-peer software such as LimeWire legal and safe to use?
Hi Darren,
I really do feel for you, and I'm not trying to be a smartypants, but the best way in my opinion to speed up a machine running Vista is to purchase a copy of XP or download the newest version of Ubuntu, uninstall Vista and install either XP, Ubuntu, or dual-boot.
Alternately, there is that cool feature in Vista that allows users to use things like usb memory sticks and sd cards as memory - maybe go pick up a cheap 4 or 8 gb usb stick and give that a shot.
Good luck!
These might seem like very obvious fix's, but I do believe my 32 bit, 2 gig ram laptop is extremly fast. Firstly, keep your start-up menu at a bare minimum. If you don't need it, don't start it! Simple. 2ndly, keep you anti-virus programs to a single number. I fixed a machine the other day, and all it took was turning off a free spy sweeper, when there was already Norton running. Use these extra's on occasions, but not all the time. C, having quicktime along with 1,2, or more other music players on your desktop( not uncommon with all these free menu bars that find there way on your machine!)can clash with each other. These seem like totally obvious things that I'm pointing out, but all too often, people clog their operating up with 3 music players, 3 anti-virus programs,4 toolbars, 3 pop-up blockers, and well, you take a shot at what the "free" google tool bar can add to IE-7! I run the bare minimum with my vista business and my machine scoots like a desktop. Hope this helps, happy surfing, a vista-fan
Unless you bought a gaming machine I don't think you will ever be able to speed up your Vista. Vista is a extremely video intensive software, and it should only be sold on machines with gaming type video cards, and a minimum of 512MB of video memory. Even better two video cards working in tandem (SLI or Crossfire)with a minimum of 256MB of memory to get that neck breaking speed you expected when you bought your new computer.
Sure you disable your "Elegant Windows Aero desktop experience" and get your speeds back to Windows XP speeds but then again you could have bought Windows XP for a whole lot less money and done that.
You need to turn off the programs running in the background. You can use (Startup Inspector For Windows) to do that.Have fun.
Hold on help is on the way via Service Pack 3
Beta's of both Vista and XP are out right now.
although I had problems with XP SP 3 it did seem to speed up XP. The Service Pack for Vista should be out in Jan.
but XP with SP 3 will still be faster.
I hear that Microsoft is going to release Windows 7 early as Vista has had many problems and XP is a better OS
Darren: Perhaps is your ISP the one that is slow, till 6 weeks ago I had BellSouth-AT&T and even with their Accelerator it was the Pits, and they they were to raise the price this Month, so I changed to Time Warner RoadRunner High Speed and is so fast that make your Head Spin, now the price is not cheap, but I downloaded a song that was 8.7 MG in less that 40 seconds.
I also had Windows 3.1 in 1994, 98 in 1997 and ME in 2.000, but always with Dial-Up service.
The PC with ME, is connected to RoadRunner, by way of a Router, that way Hubby and Son, will leave my new Dell alone, as they don't have much practice on any PC's, so if they goof, mine will still working, I did a Full Restore on it, so they can do whatever they want on it, by the way the ME still in perfect order till....LOL till they get often into it.
Have Nice Holidays and A Very Good 2008.

You know, some people use their computers for things other than web surfing. And even those people find Vista to be painfully slow. You can't blame an ISP for Vista's dismal performance.
