Is Sony Ericsson 580i compatible with Mac?

by colilu - 9/8/07 3:06 PM

I'm thinking of buying the 580i, but not sure if it's Mac compatible. Would I be able to transfer music files to the phone without using its Disc2Phone software? I'd love it if I could do so via Bluetooth. Thanks in advance!

Did you ever find the answer to this?

by lisah6625 - 9/17/07 8:12 AM In reply to: Is Sony Ericsson 580i compatible with Mac? by colilu

I too am an MAC user and very interested in the Sony Ericsson 580i. By using the usb cable it should, in theory, work fine but you never know.

It works- mostly

I have the phone and a Macbook Pro. I actually don't have the Disc2Phone utility but fortunately you can move music to it via Bluetooth (by browsing the phone). It is not super fast but it works.

Isync doesn't work out of the box but for about $6 (found it via google) you can buy a plugin that will enable ical/addressbook syncing via isync.

I like it- it does everything pretty well and has some clever features like remembering the last few people you've text messaged. I've always like Sony-Ericssons and this is no exception.

Explain how to transfer music from Mac to 850i ...

by mmcmilla - 10/28/07 1:44 PM In reply to: It works- mostly by maj12345

Can someone explain to me how I can transfer music from a Mac's iTunes to the Sony Ericsson 850i via Bluetooth or USB ? My daughter just got this phone, and I haven't used the Mac's Bluetooth for anything other than wireless keyboard and mouse. Some simple step-by-steps for this novice would be appreciated.

Bluetooth File Exchange...

With this utility you can move music and pictures back and forth from comp. to phone. It is slow, your best bet us to get a USB card reader, which I'm going to do. The software that is downloadable from the SE site is only for pc's so the usb cord doesn't work.
Hope this helps!

Transfer with USB

by OBDOBD - 3/25/08 5:36 AM In reply to: Explain how to transfer music from Mac to 850i ... by mmcmilla

You can actually connect the phone to the computer with the USB cable. The phone and the phone card will mount as removable disks and you can manually copy your music into the "Music" folder. After you have copied you need to use a tool called FinderCleaner, available here to clean some junk that the Finder creates on your phone.

Another option is EasyListening, at http://www.divinerobot.com/easylistening which should take care of all the copying from iTunes automatically.

Transfer with USB

by wordnworks - 4/19/08 7:24 PM In reply to: Transfer with USB by OBDOBD

I just tried this with my new (refurb) phone. My Mac didn't not detect my phone as a device plugged into the USB port. Any suggestions about what could be wrong?

by Scott Jones - 12/19/07 7:36 PM In reply to: It works- mostly by maj12345

You mentioned a plugin that you found on Google that allows the W580i to work with isync (iCal/AddressBook). I can't seem to find it. Can you give me any more info so i can find it?

I found it
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/30274&mode=feedback

It's really easy to install. And it works great! I was trying to use the free plug-in, but I didn't know how to make it work. 3 bucks is worth it.

it should work via bluetooth or usb.

by emoslayer6224 - 10/29/07 3:59 PM In reply to: Is Sony Ericsson 580i compatible with Mac? by colilu

I don't see why you would need to as all ericsson phones are file transfer capable and that's all you'd need, unless you wanted to change the UI.

OK my bad...

When I first got the phone, (about two weeks ago) and I plugged in the USB in and nothing happened. FYI: I am using an iMAC 10.4.10. I couldn't believe it didn't show up on my desktop. Well tonight I tried it again and no problem. The difference is two or so weeks ago I didn't have my 1 gig memory card yet and didn't realize my boyfriend took out the standard one that comes with it. So with the MAC you don't need to worry about downloading the software yad, yad, yad. Cool phone, love it.

Sony Ericsson 580i and mac

by shanitonyc - 11/2/07 11:16 PM In reply to: OK my bad... by lisah6625

Hello all -
saw your posts and thought i'd throw my two cents in.
I've had the phone for a few days now and am finally liking it.
Was a drag to see that it wouldn't isync, but as someone mentioned, there seems to be a plugin for that, and i suppose it will be added via apple at some point.
As for transferring music, the supplied usb cable works fine.
It's also possible to transfer all your contact info from one SE phone to another via bluetooth. So, though not entirely mac-friendly, sure could be worse.
Has anyone had any luck using it to go online as a bluetooth-modem for a laptop?
