BB rep says yes, I need the Monster brand (I'm skeptical) specifically the highest end cable made for HDMI-1.3.
Their price for a 4 foot cable of this flavor is a mere $120.
Gary
Clearly the expensive HDMI cables are not necessary.
Thanks all...
Gary
When I bought the Oppo DV-981 HD DVD player it came with one gold plated HDMI connector. I added to the order two additional cables of the same type although longer at 15 feet for the price of $29 each.
I figure I saved $200 from the cost of two Monster cables at $129 each. ![]()
Gary
HDMI 1.3a version has higher bandwith than 1.1,or, 1.2, thus can carry more info, like Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio. You don't need the expensive stuff, but IF you require 1.3 make sure you get 1.3 capable.
Not true?
Gary
you are correct Rollbar. I am not 100% sure, but I believe that you only need the 1.3 on the TV, the player or set-top box, and the source. The cable remains the same.
One thing I am certain of is that you did the right thing not buying the Monster cable. Having their cable for analog connections can improve quality some, but for digital, like HDMI, it is totally not necessary. It is either off or on. There is no in between. Monster has been scamming people into buying HDMI cables that go as high as $300, and it is really ridiculous.
CHECK OUT MONOPRICE CABLE (direct sales) and PHILIPS CABLES available at WAL-MART of all places. MONSTER is a terrible rip-off.
Enough said.
River.
Check www.hdmi.com
This is the site of HDMI and published within it are the technical white papers (a few hundred pages) of HDMI spec 1.3. There is also a FAQ section that addresses this.
There are major diiferences betwen 1.0 and 1.3, including HDCPand minimum bandwith requirements.
Do make sure whatever cables you get are SimplayHD certified, so the minimum requirements are fulfilled for bandwith. Monster isn't the only brand that features this, but some cheap HDMI cables simply do not have the bandwith of the Simplay-certified cables.
The bandwith of an HDMI cable must be at least 4.95Gbps. This is assuming 8 bit color and 60hz refresh.
The bandwith for 1080p with 16 bit color and 120hz refresh (to future proof your investment is 10.2Gbps or approx. 1.65Ghz. These are posted on Monster's website (www.monstercable.com), as well as Analysis-Plus' website (www.analysis-plus.com). The nice thing about Monster and Analysis-Plus is that they are ISF and SimplayHD Certified, certified not to screw with color accuracy, certified to give you a picture when other cables may not due to either bandwith or construction retsraints. Worst comes to worst, and you really want a high-end cable, that would be entirely furture proofed, check out Nordost.
NS...Thanks for putting all these morons in there place. There is a major difference in quality of cables. Regardless of being digital or analog, the quality of the metal in the cable, if sub-par, will definitely cause a drop of some 1's and 0's. Interference from other electronic equipment will cause the same problems. So quality shielding will help as well. Bandwidth is everything! I am assuming half the people that replied to this question would put a house fire out with a garden hose, instead of calling the fire department that has adequate equipment to do so. If any one out there wants to buy a cheap, crap cable to hook up your expensive equipment then go for it. But stop telling people on forums crap! Go play in traffic
1) How do I know if the cables I have are "good enough" to carry the full 1080p signal without loss? Can I test them?
2) How do I know if the cables I buy are "good enough"? What do I look for as a spec?
Roll
Silicon Optix HQV Test Disc on BD
Film Resolution Loss Test.
Sencore Calibration Software (ISF Certification) shows resolution when 'eye' is attached to center of TV and HDMI is attached (a good cable will leave no restrictions in the test, whereas a bad one will not allow me to complete the test (e.g. Dynex/Rocketfish/Monoprice).
them in there place as opposed to their place. We consider the source.
I see you added nothing to this conversation! Just pointing out a typo. Do you want to add anything worth my time Bill?
