Home theater audio help

by crisrisl - 12/15/07 3:04 PM

I am having problems getting my new setup to function correctly. The problem is...I cannot get the TV sound to come out through the theater system speakers.

TV: Magnavox 42" Plasma HDTV model number 42MF237S
Theater system: LG Compact Home Theater System model number LFD790
(other attached items are a Wii and TIVO...no cable box).

The TV has a single digital audio out. The theater system has either RCA red/white audio in, or optical in.

The theater system functions fine on its own, as it plays DVDs also and the sound works. It is connected with an HDMI cable to the TV, and I can even get the DVD sound to come out through the TV speakers.

I have tried connecting the subwoofer (where the jacks are) using a Y adapter for RCA, connecting red/white to the theater system and the single jack to the TV. No luck. I have tried using a single digital audio cable (the theater system book says one cable can be used and to plug it into audio in L) but still no luck.

I have read that the TV speakers may need to be turned off for it to function properly, however there is nowhere I can find in the menu to select where I want the audio to come out...

Any assistance/advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Home theater audio help

Only thing I can think of is that somehow the output signal for audio needs to be turned up in the OSD of the TV. In a lot of cases, the sound output through audio-wires is on the same controller as the headphones. So check the On-Screen Display of the TV and try turning up the headphones volume... See what happens.

Possible Solutions

You could buy a simple RCA audio switch to hook up both the Wii and Tivo to, and hook the output from the switch to the home theater system. That way, you wouldn't have to bother with the audio output from the TV.

If you'd rather have the sound output from the TV, then you'll need a couple of things. It sounds like you have only a coaxial digital audio output from the TV. You need a converter to change the digital coax signal to a digital optical signal (TOSLINK) for your theater system. You should be able to use a standard RCA cable for the coax part, but you will need to purchase a TOSLINK cable for the optical part.

I'm not sure if you'll be able to purchase the converter at one of the chain electronic stores, but this is an example of what it is:

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions...I seemed to be having no luck but...we upgraded to direct tv this week so were holding off on buying any additional devices until we tried it out with the directv receiver. Good news is, the receiver has an optical audio out...so I just connected that to the sound receiver and...tada...it works :)
